To ask what speed on a dual carriageway....

Hi all,

I want to ask you, what speed do you do down a dual carriageway that is NSL? I mean you personally.

I know the limit is 70mph.

I do stick to 70, because it was drilled into me by my dad. I am sure I have broke the speed limit at some point in my driving life, if only briefly, think we all have.

But back to it. What speed do you do? Also what speed do you think is acceptable max? My DH does 80 and thinks most do so. Confused

Also I am asking what speed your speedometer says. I know they are out some what but just to keep it simple, for me lol. Grin

You absolutely shouldn’t go flying round blind bends but a dual carriageway is, nevertheless, two carriageways, NOT two lanes.

LotteLupin · 20/01/2020 06:50

I tend really not to go over 70 on a two-lane dual carriageway. I must confess will get up to 80 on a three-lane motorway.

LotteLupin · 20/01/2020 06:52

Ps and I used to think 60 was the limit on dual carriageways and do that. But after a speed awareness course lol I learnt it is 70 when you have more than one lane and a physical separation of the two sides - eg a barrier. So now I can go faster!! But actually I rarely go up to 70 on them. Because butter wouldn't melt in my mouth 😉

SingingLily · 20/01/2020 06:55

Always tend to go just under the speed limit, depending on traffic and conditions.

My satnav is just 12 months old and is sometimes wrong about the applicable speed limit. It contradicts the road signs, which are the arbiter.

I only rely on my satnav for directions and even then...

Looobyloo · 20/01/2020 06:59

Zara Tindall does 91 mph which according to the telegraph readers is acceptable and they'd do that if their landrover was capable, hahahaha (them laughing not me)

I do 70, 75 tops.

Notajogger · 20/01/2020 07:08

I got caught by a policeman with a handheld traffic camera - my speedo said about 33mph, that was also what the ticket said - so this thing people are saying about speedos not being correct is very risky!

coconuttelegraph · 20/01/2020 08:26

You can't conclude from one speed ticket that you've had that all speedometers are correct, it's simply a fact that they aren't

If you look into it you'll see that there are many reason that they might not be 100% accurate. As long as they don't tell you a slower speed then you are actually doing some inaccuracy is allowed.

thecatsthecats · 20/01/2020 08:40

It bugs me when people say that the speed is 70 if the speedo reads 77.

I had a Citroen C3 that had a digital speed display that almost exactly matched the GPS.

It's up to 10% lower, not a given! (I think it must be down to the inaccuracies of the needle on the speedo, as all the digital ones I've seen have been accurate).

Ja, I was thinking to start a thread about the NDR, too :)

Reginabambina · 20/01/2020 18:50

In fair weather and normal traffic (relative to the size of the road, not relative to what is average in that area) I cruise control on 70. If conditions require less then I drive to the conditions. I don’t speed myself (don’t want to bother thinking about where there might be police or speed cameras might be but obviously the speed limit is pretty arbitrary. I have nothing against being a passenger to a driver driving to the maximum definitely safe speed according to the road quality, car quality, driving conditions and, driving ability.

Reginabambina · 20/01/2020 18:59

@Notajogger hand heads are not accurate. If you put a policeman on the stand that’s what they’ll tell you.

Urkiddingright · 20/01/2020 19:04

I commute to Leeds on the N1 from the south. I do about 40 mph!

This is as irresponsible and dangerous as speeding imo. The speed limit is 70 and while it’s not a target, you shouldn’t be driving any less than 60. You could easily cause a crash driving so far under the limit.

IScreamForIceCreams · 20/01/2020 19:07

Aren't speedlimits here for a reason?

BikeRunSki · 20/01/2020 22:19

Sorry, @Urkiddingright, I was kidding right? It was a poor joke about the congestion on this road. I actually make normal progress according to the road and traffic conditions.

@lljkk

I nearly got wiped out by a Merc on that today, who was in the very inside lane, then carved into mine to make his exit, forcing me to brake hard.

Hence my earlier point about bad observation, positioning and skill!

Emmelina · 20/01/2020 22:42

The limit is 70 unless it says lower, so I don’t go over 70. My car has a digital speedo and sat nav built in so I’m assuming what’s on the dash is pretty accurate to be honest.
