You don't want to watch a retired footballer singing terribly , and dressed as a tree?

UnderperformingSeal · 19/01/2020 02:29

Where my 80's kids at?
You remember a school holiday programme called Why Don't You...?

Why don't you turn off your TV and do something less boring instead?

hammeringinmyhead · 19/01/2020 03:35

@hammeringinmyhead You are assuming everyone can pay for Netflix, Prime and Now TV . Not every one can you know.

I also mentioned iPlayer (which I used as shorthand for 4OD, ITV Player etc) which is included with the cost of your TV Licence and as someone else said can be accessed by most internet TVs or basic smartphones. And I wasn't assuming everyone can pay for all of these - I only have Netflix which is all of what, 2 quid a week? Now TV can be 2-3 pounds a month and I'm currently on a free 3 month trial of Prime. If you want to be really pedantic about cost, our local library lends DVDs box sets for 50p.

*I recall Saturday tv as a kid, all family gathered around. Things on like Gladiators, Family Fortunes, Blind date etc. It might’ve been lame at times but all ages could watch it and they had members of the public on so it felt relatable. These days it’s all z-list celebs and the same old commercial rubbish

Those were the good old days. Sigh.*

I'm old enough to remember that period of television as an adult. I couldn't stand any of those shows. Banal, populist garbage. TV was shite then too.

HeIenaDove · 19/01/2020 17:50

What i loved was Robin of Sherwood

Thymelord · 19/01/2020 17:54

That Jason Manford thing was an absolute cringefest, and as for watching the odious Cheryl on The Greatest Dancer, the offerings were shite! What is her problem with Oti?! It's unpleasant to watch!

Cornettoninja · 19/01/2020 17:57

Saturday night telly is meant to be shit - it’s a tradition! Be thankful there’s no Noel Edmunds and Mr Blobby bouncing across your screens anymore or people losing their shit over cuddly toys on the generation game Grin

I get quite nostalgic inflicting Saturday night tv on my dd. I like that Jason Manford one and the masked singer and pointless (can’t be arsed with endless talent shows though). I like programmes we can all shout answers at - it’s bonding.

andyjusthangingaround · 19/01/2020 18:22

The Masked Singer - what’s not to like? 😂😂😂

rockingthelook · 19/01/2020 19:47

I'm fed up of bloody talent shows, the Voice, X Factor, Greatest Dancer, all the same old crap that seems to dominate, sadly showing my age I used to like the Generation Game, Noels House Party, Starsky and Hutch or just a good film, all the channels but nothing on worth watching!

TheSandman · 19/01/2020 20:15

If you want to (and who wouldn't?) you can go look see what was on on (the BBC) for every Saturday night since they invented television here:

genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/

FizzyIce · 20/01/2020 17:28

@andyjusthangingaround Er.. Rita Ora and her incessant fawning and name dropping ?

pigsDOfly · 20/01/2020 17:47

Which is why I always make sure I have lots of stuff recorded from the week that I can watch. Although, I'm finding it's getting more and more difficult to find decent stuff to record during the week and anything I'd want to watch I've probably watched half a dozen times already.

Sunday has always been pretty dire, in my opinion as well, but then I don't like things like Downton Abbey or Sunday night at the London Palladium.

I think the more television channels we have, the worse television seems to become: masked singers, the voice et al; I don't want to watch talent shows and listen to people, who more often than not can't actually sing.

I don't want to watch people getting naked in a variation of blind date, or indeed, any variation of blind date, come to that.

I don't want to watch programmes in which has beens and z list celebrities eat live bugs and squabble in jungles; the list of things I don't want to see on tv is endless.

And for god's sake can we please see an end to all the reality murder programmes: Fred and Rose West are not entertainment.

I want to be entertained. Is that too much too ask.

andyjusthangingaround · 20/01/2020 20:04

@FizzyIce - I think she learned her lesson - she was really, i mean really into the Chameleon - until it turned out to be a no-name ex-druggie and not Anthony Joshua... Hmm

BUT last week`s Tree? Hmmm... he looked CUTE! (Teddy Sheringham)
Now, I think they are mostly Z-list celebrities, but apparently Teddy is at least a D! Smile Grin

FizzyIce · 20/01/2020 20:51

@andyjusthangingaround That was hilarious!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching her face drop

BingoLittlesUncle · 20/01/2020 20:54

We reckon it's a plot by the brewers to drive us down the pubs.

ooooohbetty · 20/01/2020 20:57

I was without Netflix or any kind of catchup last Saturday night and I found loads to watch on Freeview. History stuff on channel 5. A murder documentary on a channel I'd never heard of. It was good.

andyjusthangingaround · 20/01/2020 21:00

@FizzyIce - I felt a bit sorry for her... Wink while secretly hoping that somehow a 66" Anthony Joshua can fit into a 6 costume - it was very disappointing!

Greydove28 · 20/01/2020 21:03

Was just saying this earlier and how grateful i am for netflix. The live tele us crap and don't get me started on those piss poor soaps in the week. Just mind numbing shit.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 20/01/2020 21:05

Er...what difference does the day make? Surely even if you don't have Netflix etc you can use iplayer.

RhitaGawr · 20/01/2020 21:08

The Masked Singer is absolutely bloody bonkers! 🤣

Redshoeblueshoe · 20/01/2020 21:12

Wisting on BBC4 is great. But everything else is rubbish.

1Morewineplease · 20/01/2020 21:14

I agree with @Flavabobble
Blind Date set a precedent for shite Saturday night tv.
Downhill from there on.

Ohtherewearethen · 20/01/2020 21:23

I can remember when Friday night tele used to be worth staying in for but now Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights' offerings are absolute drivel. I love a good Nordic noir or series such as Luther, Line of Duty, etc but they are too few and far between now. Nothing really lasts (except, it appears, Casualty?!) You get into a series and it's only a three-parter and that's that for another 6 months. No long-running comedies (eg Only Fools, The Good Life) to look forward to either. It really is all just shite.

Norugratsatall · 20/01/2020 21:24

@TheSandman that link is fab - a real trip down memory lane. Thank you!
