To think a 10 year old should eat crusts

My stepson is 11 in a few months and only eats the middle of his sandwiches and then is hungry 1 hour after lunch and grazes on snacks all day. I don't understand why, at nearly 11, he is having his crusts cut off or being allowed to leave them. Is this normal? Do lots of people leave their crusts? Fyi he doesn't have any problems with swallowing or have any allergies.

gahd i don't think i could cope being in the presence of all these people who don't eat crusts. what a waste.

It's only waste if you don't use it, then it's down to you and not the person leaving them.

I blitz and freeze mine for breadcrumbs, or I feed to the birds. There is little food waste in our house but what little there is gets frozen or cooked and used for something else.

HoldMyLobster · 20/01/2020 01:25

We're actually stockpiling all the crusts for the day when there are no longer any crusts.

It's coming [nods sagely]

Baaaahhhhh · 20/01/2020 12:16

Well, I have been known to cut off the blue spotted crusts, and eaten the remaining inside, un-mouldy bits..... is that acceptable, or do I still go down in flames for food waste Grin.

Newdadtogirl · 20/01/2020 12:32

Im not a fan of crusts on bread Shouldn't eat crusts unless you want curly hair.

motherheroic · 20/01/2020 12:35

I don't like the top bit of the crust because it's always burnt, so I leave it.

AryaStarkWolf · 20/01/2020 12:36

Jeez leave the poor kid alone, he doesn't like them, lots of people don't

motherheroic · 20/01/2020 12:36

And they're not wasted because the dog happily carries them off to his bed to eat them.

TriciaH87 · 20/01/2020 12:40

I'm 32 and don't eat the crust. My son is nearly 10 and doesn't eat it either. He is however waiting for a diagnosis of ARFID. Some people don't like to eat certain things. It's like taking the pickle out of your burger at macdonalds some do some don't. Clearly he doesn't like crust and why should a child be forced to eat it. As an adult you would not expect to be made to eat something you don't like. Your not going to avoid sandwiches just because you don't eat crust you may however avoid rolls.

SuperSleepyBaby · 20/01/2020 12:44

I have a 10 year old who seems to be hungry all day no matter how much he eats. I give him healthy snacks like apples, bananas, carrot sticks, porridge, muesli, soup, vegetable pasta, scrambled egg, wholemeal toast, greek yogurt with berries etc. He also eats a big healthy dinner and is slim. I think its normal at that age.

Mia1415 · 20/01/2020 12:47

I'm 38 and I don't eat crusts. My son is 7 and I don't make him eat them either.

Bluerussian · 20/01/2020 12:49

I think he needs more to eat than sandwiches for lunch. Soup and fruit as well would be a good idea, a nice hearty soup. Welsh rarebit is very filling, I love it. Jacket potatoes with good stuff in them.

You shouldn't be forcing children to eat what they don't like. I remember when that used to happen at school and when I was in hospital, it was a nightmare.

Puddlepop · 20/01/2020 13:45

I don’t really like crusts but dislike wasting food even more. If I have sliced bread, I’ll either put more sandwich filling at the edges so the crusts taste more attractive, slice the crusts off and dry them out for sticking in the fire, or make toasties because the crusts really come into their own in a toastie :0)

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/01/2020 15:10

Nope, no crusts here - crusty fresh bread, yes. Standard sliced loaf, no.

Also people tend not to butter right to the edges on sandwiches or toast which doesn't help.

I have a sliding hiatus hernia, which ive almost certainly always had according to my dr... it wasn't dx until last year. So he MIGHT have issues swallowing stuff that just hasn't been spotted yet.

Or he might not like crusts, as this thread demonstrates, plenty of people don't.

cheeseisascheesedoes · 20/01/2020 17:18

I'm on my mid-40's and have never eaten my crusts. My 10yo does, my 8yo doesn't.

Shortfeet · 20/01/2020 17:28

Come back op for me to shake your hand !

Completely agree.
So wasteful

FizzyIce · 20/01/2020 17:36

My dd8 eats her crusts but I don’t

JRUIN · 20/01/2020 18:21

I can't believe so many adults on here don't eat their crusts. When did the human race get so fussy?

Harpingon · 20/01/2020 19:02

We grew up poor, we didn't eat the crusts because that's the bit you held with your grubby hands, same with pasties : )

DollyDoneMore · 20/01/2020 20:03

Absolutely pathetic of grown adults not to eat the very slightly differently textured part of a slice of bread. Wasteful, finicky, childish and unnecessary.

hazeyjane · 20/01/2020 20:09

I lick the lid of the yoghurt pot and eat the kids leftovers...does that save me from childish, finicky pathetic-ness?

isabellerossignol · 20/01/2020 20:10

But insisting that people should eat something they don't like just because you think they should isn't childish?

I actually do eat the crusts, but honestly I don't get this obsession that it's some kind or morality contest to eat things you don't like. And if it's waste you're worried about, we tend to take the crusts that we cut off the bread for the kids and put it through the food processor and make it into crumbs for something else. So no waste here.

isabellerossignol · 20/01/2020 20:12

hazey don't be daft. It's clear that you enjoy those things. Go and do something that you find horrible, then you can redeem yourself. Wink

I don’t always eat the crusts - depends on the bread

Try giving him a different type of bread or something more filling than sandwiches. Crusts don’t make the difference between full and not full and wanting to snack. Also, children go through stages where they need to eat more regularly - they are growing!

To be honest, I think this has nothing to do with crusts though. More to do with the fact that he’s your stepson so you don’t have the control over him like you would if he were your son. It can cause a lot of tension if people hold on too dearly to “well, in MY family, as a child we did it like this”. You’re going to have to be a bit flexible and willing to compromise. It’s just crusts!!

FizzyIce · 20/01/2020 20:49

@DollyDoneMore Absolutely pathetic how someone can get so wound up over other people not eating their crusts ..

DollyDoneMore · 20/01/2020 21:03

Wound up? I’m not the one getting offended by the edge of a bit of bread.

It doesn’t take much parenting to make sure your kids don’t become fussy and precious. If they’re freaking out over something as minor as bread crusts, what else are you letting them get away with?
