To ask WTF to cook?!

Fruitbatdancer · 17/01/2020 21:01

Our kitchen is being ripped out Monday - it’s going to take 3 weeks (so im told!) . I’m thrilled and so excited to see the end result. I’m horrified at idea of 3 weeks of take out 🥴😱 Total 1st world problem i know! I’m a lucky girl. But wtf do I cook.
I have a microwave and a deep fryer and a kettle - but I rarely use either! But can set them up in lounge! Help! Hit me with you favourite non oven non hob recipes!

Do you have a fridge and a freezer?

ChocolateCoins19 · 17/01/2020 21:04

They tend to put essential items back in quite quick.
My brother does kitchens and Inc plumbing floors It's norm a week to 10 days maximum..
3 weeks is madness.

ChocolateCoins19 · 17/01/2020 21:05

This weekend cook up bolognese curry etc and freeze. and if need be just ping a jacket spud and top with that?

Fruitbatdancer · 17/01/2020 21:06

Slow cooker?

Chochito · 17/01/2020 21:07

You can make scrambled egg in the microwave.

FruityWidow · 17/01/2020 21:08

Get batch cooking this weekend and fill the freezer. The microwave can do the cooking for a while.

BackInTime · 17/01/2020 21:08

Can you borrow or purchase a slow cooker?

Fruitbatdancer · 17/01/2020 21:08

Yes! I have a slow cooker somewhere! I made a stew in it once 😂 I wonder where it is...

We had a two ring electric hob my parents were given by the gas company when the gas was out for a week.
They aren't expensive and I'd get one.
Or get a slow cooker.

Do you have a 'cook' type shop or a garden centre with a food shop that might do home cooked microwave meals?

BBQ?

TheGoatIsHere · 17/01/2020 21:11

You can buy a single ring induction hob for less than £40 - should expand cooking options cheaply

RuggerHug · 17/01/2020 21:11

You have this weekend to batch cook! Our oven died a few months ago and we'd a few weeks of microwave and kettle living. Tins of soup, microwave rice, noodles can be done in the microwave. Just start planning now, the novelty wore off very quickly here.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/01/2020 21:12

Buy or borrow a slow cooker, instant pot or plug in hob.

Batch cook this weekend to microwave.

Use it as an excuse to eat out or get takeaway a lot.

Get nice microwave meals.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 17/01/2020 21:12

Buy a portable induction hob.

Firstly, don't plug appliances into extension leads.
I'm assuming you have a basic microwave.

Off the top of my head, you could make stews/casseroles in advance and heat them in the microwave.
Rice/jacket potatoes/boiled & frozen veg can all be done in a microwave although it may take a bit of juggling to get it all cooked/hot at the same time.

Micro wave rice Slow cooker curry
Stew/Beef joint or pulled pork.
Gammon joint in slow cooker and salad
Freeze lasagna/chili -
use microwave for jacket potatoes -with chills or tuna or cheese
Beans on toast
Do you have a toasty machine? Like a George Forman? Great for Bacon and sausages, gammon steaks or pork steaks, as well as toasties.
Invite yourself to friend/parents!
Takeaway as a last resort

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 17/01/2020 21:18

Posh sandwiches and salads
Noodles that you just had to add boiling water to

Soup and posh bread
Things like stews reheat fine in microwave or slow cooker and get mash ready meal
I think you can cook a LOT of things in the slow cooker including pasta and puddings

MumW · 17/01/2020 21:18

Bbq if the weather isn't too bad - wrap up to cook and eat inside, obviously.

Jamhandprints · 17/01/2020 21:24

There are some really nice microwave rice packets. Plain ones to go with frozen curry or casserole, flavoured ones with some salsa, yogurt and salad.
Chicken caesar salad, salad kits and ready cooked chicken.
Supermarket cooked roast chicken with french bread and salad, or frozen mash, veg and gravy.
Iceland do some frozen packets of things like paella, pasta and risotto that you can microwave.

UserX · 17/01/2020 21:27

Get an instant pot, you can cook loads in it.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 17/01/2020 21:35

Get an electric frying pan then you can make any one pot meals you usually do but I could easily live off risotto & scrambled eggs Grin

SayitBeit · 17/01/2020 21:37

Buy an air fryer.

Seize the moment Gin

40andfeelingit · 17/01/2020 21:48

Ooh we did this earlier this year
Frozen jackets spuds with assorted fillings
Microwave spicy packet rice, ready cooked chicken breast and green salad
Microwave tomato risotto - recipe on BBC
Food
And get a toastie machine - they’re the best!

I haven't tried all the recipes on this link but I have tried and liked:

Easy sweet and sour chicken (serve with uncle ben's microwave egg fried rice)

Hubble bubble pumpkin pot (use butternut squash instead of pumpkin and serve with birds eye micro veg pouch)

Microwave banana pudding (serve with ice cream)
