To complain to uni

Hi,
New poster and account here so sorry if I've posted in the wrong section.
But I'm applying to nursing this year and applied to a uni and had an interview for it. They gave me an offer but for a different course for healthcare studies because I didn't meet the entry requirements.
If I didn't meet their requirements shouldn't they have rejected me before and not make me prepare for a nursing interview to give me another course

I'm not sure why the hide button isn't working? Maybe someone else who help

june2007 · 17/01/2020 20:11

You can use an Ba in ECS as a step towards nursing. (If you don,t get any other offers.0)

VivaLeBeaver · 17/01/2020 20:12

I think you’ve misunderstood. No university would invite someone for interview and then turn them down because of predicted grades. I’m a nursing lecturer btw so know what I’m talking about. They might give you an offer of BBB and then that gives you the opportunity to beat your predicted grades and get a place.

By the way BBB is quite high for a low ranked nursing degree? BBC is more standard for nursing. Or locally it is anyway.

Anyway universities are encouraged by the NMc to adopt a values based recruitment. So as well as meeting the grade requirements we have to select applicants who demonstrate the sort of values you’re expected to have as a nurse. So determining this in the interview is also part of the entry requirements and it sounds to me that this is the bit where you haven’t met the entry requirements. Entry requirements does not just mean qualifications.

A university aren’t going to interview someone for a course they know hasn’t got a chance of getting a place, believe me we’re busy enough interviewing people who have got a chance.

Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 20:13

@BlueChangeling oh it is. i just thought it meant no one else could reply to the thread and not that it was just hid from me####/

Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 20:15

@VivaLeBeaver Ok, Thank-you . That makes sense i do think it was because i messed up one of my drug calculations. However will phone them and ask for clarification so i can improve.

@butterer i meant while i was doing the exam i just saw them as math questions . I obviously do understand the importance of drug calculations in the role of a nurse and understand how crucial it is on the service users life to give the right dose

OP posts:
Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 20:20

@butterer And it didn't take someone to point it out for me to worry , I was stressing about getting the question wrong however the lecturer said to us at the start not to worry about them and that some candidates freeze and don't answer any questions. He said they look at everything holistically.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 17/01/2020 20:20

Good luck. And well done on your other offer. Definitely ask for feedback. Sometimes it’s just a case of not realising what the question was really about/what they’re looking for. I see a lot of people answer the questions very briefly and not go on to expand their answers. Maybe sometimes due to nerves or lack of experience in an interview. People don’t always sell themselves and not getting a place does not necessarily mean you don’t have the capacity to go on and be a good nurse. It’s a numbers game, sometimes people just score higher than you.

LagunaBubbles · 17/01/2020 20:23

Why do you need a back up if you've been accepted somewhere else?

Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 20:28

@VivaLeBeaver Thank-you so much for the advice , I will get feeback and improve on my areas of weakness Smile

@Yourejokingme - we only needed 80% for our maths test at interview - but it was general maths rather than drug calcs.

We did need 100% on all our drug calcs tests, however this is not the case at all Unis - which really shocked me! Some only need 80% 1st year, 90% 2nd year, 100% 3rd year. But one Uni I heard of only needed 90% in 3rd year! Shock

UndertheCedartree · 17/01/2020 20:35

@Nursingnew - I can't believe how lax they were about the tests! We were told we only had a short time to do the tests to see how we worked under pressure - anyone who froze wouldn't have got an interview.

Even out of those who got on the course those with lower levels of Maths and English really struggled with the course.

CrazyToast · 17/01/2020 20:43

Admissions officer here--- email the Admissions team and request feedback and tips for improvement. You could even ask for clarification about the decision process in terms of the grades/interview thing. It is disappointing to be unsuccessful, but please don't take it to heart too much. There are ways to get where you want to be, sometimes it just takes a bit of a longer and more winding route than you expected.

Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 20:47

@CrazyToast Thank-you, will do Smile

“ Some only need 80% 1st year, 90% 2nd year, 100% 3rd year. But one Uni I heard of only needed 90% in 3rd year!”

The one I’m aware of is 85% in second year, 100% in third year. No drugs calc in first year. The admissions maths test is general arithmetic. I didn’t know that there were any that didn’t have 100% for final year at least! I thought that was an NMC requirement (but I’m not actually involved in curriculum)

Vikingess · 17/01/2020 21:17

I am surprised you were offered anything at all. Your post is barely literate.

YasssKween · 17/01/2020 21:21

Just saw that you're 17 OP. I'm sorry if the tone of my posts was upsetting.

I stand by the content but if I'd known you were 17 I would have been a bit more gentle!

Anyway I'm to see you're taking the advice on here on board. We all have a lot of growing up to do when we are 17 so keep going and I wish you all the best.

Remember it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!x

UndertheCedartree · 17/01/2020 21:22

@IvinghoeBeacon - it is pretty shocking!

CheddarGorgeous · 17/01/2020 21:29

It's a marketing gimmick for universities. They interview students for popular courses knowing they won't get an offer but hoping to hook them into undersubscribed courses.

Sneaky but not strictly against any admissions code and difficult to prove. They'll probably just say you didn't perform well at interview.

Good luck with the rest of your applications.

Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 21:32

@YasssKween no its fine , i really appreciate all the advice you have given me and will reflect on it . Thank-you so much.

OP posts:
Nursingnew · 17/01/2020 21:36

@CheddarGorgeous That is interesting because they are always in clearing . A family friend got into the same nursing course as me with CCD through clearing. The course they have offered me does not interest me at all and does not take you anywhere one you have graduated as you would either have to do a further nursing degree or go into teaching.
Thank-you.

Be aware that 'low ranking' uni is pretty meaningless for a vocational degree such as nursing. It's true to say that if you are an academically excellent student with top grades wanting to study a pure subject, RG universities will probably (but not always) be better. However nursing is not that type of course. RG universities do more research which is irrelevant for nursing - even at an RG university you would probably not be taught much (if at all) by people at the cutting edge of research. RG or not doesn't tell you anything at all about the quality of the course or the teaching or the student experience. Some non RG universities can also have excellent research for certain subjects. You need to look at the rating for a specific course not just the whole university.
