Not liking sweet stuff very much really isn’t that weird?

I do like chocolate, biscuits, I take sugar in tea, etc, but given a choice I’ll usually go for a savoury option

If I’m out for a meal I’ll always go for a starter and a main course. If there’s a cheese board available, I’ll order it but I usually skip the pudding course as there’s never anything I fancy

I’m a member of a knitting group. We usually get together for a Christmas night out, couldn’t get us all together before Christmas so went out for a meal last night

The rest of the group decided they didn’t want starters as they wanted puddings. Fine, I ordered a main course, which was pretty huge when it came anyway so was perfectly happy. The waiter came to take the pudding orders, no cheese board so I just declined.

Lots of comments from the others so I explained the not really liking puddings thing and given their reaction anyone would think I was some kind of freak. Someone was even pushing me to ‘just order some ice cream”

I joked and said if I could order off the starter menu, I would. The waiter said lots of people say that, the kitchen was still open so go for it - so I thought fuck it, why not

Honestly, you’d think I’d had taken a shit in the middle of the dinner table because I didn’t want a bloody pudding!

I don't have a sweet tooth either, I don't hate desserts or anything but I'd far rather have a starter.

notaregularmom · 17/01/2020 12:27

I'm more of a savoury person. Always have a starter over a pudding.

GotAGripHowAboutYou · 17/01/2020 12:28

Yanbu and I just wish I was more like you BlushCake.

Feminazgul · 17/01/2020 12:28

I'd rather a savoury than a sweet too.

stopgap · 17/01/2020 12:30

I always have an appetizer over dessert, as does everyone else I know. Dessert is usually shared among a few people, which I’ve discovered might be a NYC thing.

KizzyWayfarer · 17/01/2020 12:32

Starter every time!

Sleepycat91 · 17/01/2020 12:39

Yep, i started to just say i didn't like chocolate in the end because it was easier. Cheese FTW!

ZaraW · 17/01/2020 13:09

Some people don't get it. They expect other people to act the way they do.

StrawberrySquash · 17/01/2020 13:32

Starter over pud here too. They're usually more interesting. I do love sweet stuff though, I just find a lot of restaurant puddings a bit underwhelming. I wouldn't find someone not ordering pudding at all odd.

Did you actually order the pudding-starter?

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 17/01/2020 13:37

YADBU Wink

BirthdayCakes · 17/01/2020 13:38

I suppose it usually implies some moral superiority - which is annoying when you're out for a slap up meal and a great time

Springersrock · 17/01/2020 13:38

Thanks all!

Yep Blush - hoisin duck bao buns - bloody lush!

My one exception is creme brulee, I love it, but other than that, cheese everytime

albertatrilogy · 17/01/2020 13:49

A great many dessert are cloyingly over sweet - unless it's a really good restaurant. I do like tart fruits such as blackcurrant, rhubarb, gooseberry. Also the bitterness of really dark chocolate. But loads of creamy, textureless gloop - no thanks!

nearlynermal · 17/01/2020 13:49

An ex of mine used to say he had a 'fat tooth'. He didn't care about sweets but loved pies, crisps etc.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 17/01/2020 13:51

No, it's not weird at all. Are all the members of your knitting group extremely closed and lacking in general life experience or have you over-egged this slightly for dramatic effect?

Squirrelblanket · 17/01/2020 13:51

I'm the same as you and have experienced the same reaction when not ordering a pudding.

It also happens at work when someone brings treats in as they are always chocolates or cakes and no one can quite believe I just don't want any and must be on some kind of diet.

If anyone ever brought in crisps or sausage rolls I'd be all over it! Grin

Hagbeth · 17/01/2020 13:52

YANBU I’m the same. I find most things too sweet. I’ve always been like this. I’m the only child I know who left the M&M’s to slowly dry out in the cupboard! Grin

Herts6789 · 17/01/2020 13:56

Agree with you OP - especially as unless you're at a really good restaurant the dessert is just going to be something that comes pre-prepared and defrosted. Not worth it.

That said, creme brulee is my deal breaker, i just LOVE IT so will go for that if its on the menu :)

Damntheman · 17/01/2020 13:57

Nah I'm the same as you OP. Salty snacks over sweet any day! I get a lot of shit from my colleagues every friday when I decline cake - there's a lot of really inappropriate dieting/anorexia comments which I don't appreciate at all. Just let people eat what they bloody want for heaven's sake! It's not like they don't all watch me eat a normal sized lunch two hours earlier either..

Katinski · 17/01/2020 13:58

Me tooSmile

Same!

My boss brings in donuts on a Friday and always comments that I must be on a diet when I politely say no thanks - I’ve got a tube of Pringles I’m munching my way through so I’m hardly making healthy choices here Grin

Not really sure where moral superiority comes into it tbh, I’ll order a cheese board if there’s one on the menu, if not, I’m not ordering something I don’t really want just so someone else doesn’t feel bad

Dd bought me a Krispy Kreme a while back, I took a bite and gave her it back!

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/01/2020 14:06

Exactly Springers
Cheese is hardly a low cal option.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/01/2020 13:11

Not really sure where moral superiority comes into it tbh I think that poster meant there are some people (they weren't saying you) do the whole "ohh I couldn't possibly eat a pudding, far too sweet for me, I don't know how people can eat them bla bla bla"
