To think my employers are a shower of shits

Who don't know how to manage a fecking thing in their lives.

Where do I start

  1. got told at the interview it was a 35 hour contract - wrong. I'm doing 18 hours on a good week.
  2. two days after the interview, I got told it was £8.63 pay. I was being paid this from when I started to 01/12/19. They reduced it to min wage, with no warning. I queried this with my manager several times, who told me various reasons (it's a tax thing, it's just a mistake etc etc) I went to head office who told me I've had a postcode change 🤨 which prompted my money to be reduced, they haven't acknowledged the fact I was given no warning and I still haven't been paid what I was owed! (Acas told me I'm entitled to the rate of pay of 8.63 until the point I was made aware of their reasoning, a good 8 days pay and they aren't giving me it)
  3. they cancel my shifts with 10 mins notice. Or 4 hours notice if it's a good day!!
  4. I've just found out they've put a colleague of mine on holiday!! Didn't ask her, they've just done it!

I'm thoroughly fed up, working 3 shifts this week and only 1 is 7 hours long. I've looked most places possible for a new job but I'm not having any luck. I've tried speaking to the managers but they don't care and I'm not sure what else I can do 😴

That's how they get around it. It's shit and doesn't help finances does itb

randomchap · 17/01/2020 16:31

Your employers are a massive shower of shits.

Lying to you in the interview knowing that UC has you over a barrel. Name and shame them. At least it will warn others not to be taken in by their bullshit

ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 16:34

Oh really 😭😭 that's so shocking! I have the rota for next week and I've got 22 hours next week so I can't really complain now.
This is my first employment since having children, I was so determined to prove myself and make something of myself for my children and now I just feel beat down and stuck. I simply cannot leave without another job lined up
Although maybe I could explain to UC? But then I don't want to go back to a life on benefits, I was enjoying earning 400 a month. At least it was money I could call my own! I'm sure most of you will know what I mean.
I really am trying various other places, trying my fecking hardest

You're going to have to keep on applying for anything and everything, and hope that you get a job with guaranteed full-time hours. My DD had a job like yours, 10 hours one week, 30 the next, nothing for a week, shifts cancelled at the last minute...she couldn't ever plan ahead, was consistently overdrawn and reliant on her partner for rent, utilities and food bills. Luckily, through sheer determination, and attending dozens of interviews, she eventually got a permanent full-time position with paid holidays - she says she feels like she's won the lottery.

Keep on applying for other jobs, something will come up. Then you can walk away from this shower of shits with your head held high.

ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 16:36

And do you know the absolute worst thing.. they are still employing people!!! They have adverts on Indeed posted only days ago looking for "full time" people!!
Only 3 weeks ago they took on another new girl! Everyone is fuming because more people means less hours for everyone else! I feel like banging my head against a wall

OP posts:
RedRiverShore · 17/01/2020 16:45

Why was your money reduced because of a postcode change?

FoamingAtTheUterus · 17/01/2020 16:47

Is it hungry horse by any chance?? The one near me is awful, they like to keep a skeleton staff who are worked to death and when things are quiet sent home.

They shouldn't be allowed to do it, if someone is doing the work of two people the pay should reflect that.

DeeZastris · 17/01/2020 16:50

Pretty much all restaurants are like this. It’s shit. Keep applying for anything and everything as something will turn up.

ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 16:54

I'm still not sure, I never actually got a proper answer from head office and I never got that pay either!! My post code was AB1 2HU
Which I noticed was wrong, corrected on it my employee profile to ab2 2hu and that apparently prompted them to change my pay 🤷‍♀️ (i personally think this is an excuse as that dont actually know why)
No not hungry horse, never actually heard of that!
Bit like Taco bell and KFC but I dont actually want to name it
Thanks for all the well wishes of a new job! I hadn't realised this was normal, a few members of staff who have been there 5+ years are happy with their hours Confused

Join a trade union and make sure your colleagues do the same and then speak to your rep. Things can only get better if you organise collectively.

ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 16:56

Sorry should of added, not my real postcode! But the one that was previously entered into the system was not a real one. I changed it by 1 digit.
The start of the postcode was still the same so "ab" for example so I havent changed areas or anything!
And that should say, I think they are using it as an excuse, as they dont actually know themselves

Tbh retail and restaurants are like this. New comers get less priority than those who have been there for longer. They have to make a certain amount of money every week. If it's been slow the day before, they will adjust schedules according. It's lousy to start off with. It's a soggy January so many businesses will be quiet. you may well find that your shifts increase as you get more experience and the weather improves. The more reliable you are and the harder you work, the better chances of getting more shifts. I was once given some really good advice when starting out in an office at the bottom of the pile on minimum wage. The trainer told me that however boring, full and easy the job, you'd never move up the ladder unless you threw yourself into it and did it to the best of your ability. Yes it's tough. But you need to stick this job out for a few weeks/months whilst also seeking other work.

RedRiverShore · 17/01/2020 17:02

Maybe the postcode thing is something to do with London weighting of pay and you was on the outskirts of the area for this

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 17/01/2020 17:04

Is it your net pay that has changed? Did they mean to say a tax code change?

ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 17:06

@TiddlestheCat I have been sticking it out! 4 and a half months I've been there now. Contracted to 30 hours and the most I've ever done in 4 months is 25!
Even though they told me it was a 35 hour contract. They've reduced my pay without any warning or any notice. Then made up excuses as to why it had happened. Have refused to pay the money I'm owed. I think anybody would be understandably pissed off at the above! And then to put another member of staff on holiday with no warning? They didn't even ask her if it was okay! (She has SEN) they are treating people so badly and yet still hiring 🤦‍♀️
I'm not packing it in, I'm actually really good at the job. I've closed the resturant on my own multiple times. Have opened multiple times. Have done a few charity days for them. I often have hundreds of pounds on me from the days takings so they know I'm reliable to be carrying around this amount of money and it's always there, my float is never short.
I just think it's pretty shitty, of course the people that have been there longer get treated better but that in itself is pretty shitty! Most of the people are under the age of 20, are doing this job as a temp job until uni/college/better job comes about and here is me trying to make ends meet Sad

Please join a union OP. Unfortunately, workers rights are going backwards in this country and post-Brexit it will only get worse. The only way for people to stand up for their rights is to stand together.

ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 17:07

It's my hourly rate of pay that changed, I'm not in London so I'm not understanding that comment sorry.
They knew where I lived, they knew how far away from the resturant I was but my postcode was wrong by 1 number. The postcode they had didn't exist(I googled it, no such postcode existed) so I updated it and that's trigged the hourly rate of pay change

I mentioned London as that is the only place I know where you get more pay for living there, I have never heard of it anywhere else but there.

Well as I know it, some places do pay above minimum wage, I'd actually turned down a job at Costa which is 8.50, in favour of this one as it paid more and had more hours.
(Costa are no longer hiring sadly)

Please consider joining a union. You need proper advice.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 17/01/2020 17:26

I wouldn't be so loyal OP. You clearly have valuable skills and are a hard worker, I'm sure you can get another job somewhere that treats you better? You'd be a mug to stay!
