Mumsnet advertising Daily Mail on Homepage

I actively avoid anything to do with the Daily Mail (I don't click on links from them) and cut up my Nectar card when Nectar started promoting the Daily Mail.
I was very disappointed to see Mumsnet homepage plastered with adverts for, and links to, the Daily Mail.
Now I enjoy reading MN - but if I'm going to stand by my principles I need to cut off MN don't I?

YABU - Keep Mumsnet, there's nothing wrong with the DM
YANBU - Dump MN, they're supporting hatred by promoting the DM

Also, I cringe every time I see an article about something for laydeez and it's in their femail section 🤢🤢🤢🤢.

Laydee friendly news. About flowers and kitties. None of that nasty politics. Women, know your limits!

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2020 13:02

It is hardly discussed in a positive way though. I would say most of the feeling on here towards the DM has been negative IME.

It doesn't matter though does it?

It still produces revenue and free advertising every time someone starts a fake outrage thread about a newspaper they profess to hate but can't stop reading.

MoonbeamsAndCaterpillars · 16/01/2020 13:04

Well, it isn't true to say that if you don't support something you should not discuss it.

I discuss Brexit a lot on here too. I also discuss CC.

I am in favour of neither existing.

Same goes for the DM.

SameOldHorrorStory · 16/01/2020 13:06

“Apologies for the Daily Fail link, but it’s the only thing I could find which supports my view on this topic”. 🙄

Amylox · 16/01/2020 13:10

They know exactly where most of their posters have been on the web. And I suspect they know that despite the virtue signalling most of their users do access the DM site.

MoonbeamsAndCaterpillars · 16/01/2020 13:11

You do see that horror and I do think Hmm.

MoonbeamsAndCaterpillars · 16/01/2020 13:11

It really isn't often though. I haven't seen similar for a while. I usually remember as I do find it an odd choice.

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2020 13:17

I think the weirdest thread I ever saw was by an OP asking for a handhold because they were in 'floods of tears'.

Turned out they'd read something in the Daily Mail and it was so disgusting and misogynistic, it made her burst into tears Confused

I kid you not, a Daily Mail reader asking for sympathy because she didn't like what she read in the Daily Mail Confused

MoonbeamsAndCaterpillars · 16/01/2020 13:21

Haaaahahahaha that is pure amazing worra. Sweet jesus.

Here's an idea - DON'T READ IT! Maybe it should come with a public health warning... "may contain mysoginy, racism and general hatred. Do not read if you suffer from a heart complaint or are of a nervous disposition".

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2020 14:03

Yes but I think some people like to read it every day, just to make sure they'll be as disgusted as they were the day before Grin

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 16/01/2020 17:58

At this rate we’re going to need safe spaces to protect the delicate flowers from the DM. 🤣

AriadnesFilament · 16/01/2020 18:21

Oh for heavens sake.
You cut up your nectar card?!

littlepaddypaws · 16/01/2020 18:54

for so many people claiming to hate it,there is always at least one thread with a daily mail link, so all you petulants some people make the effort to write a thread relating to something they hate.
i read the dm from time to time and i really don't give a shit if people approve or not. as for you op your choice too, you'll be closing your mn account then ? or possibly going under a new name in future...

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 17/01/2020 14:04

Oh for heavens sake. You cut up your nectar card?!

I know! Hahaha! Gosh, how pathetic.

Bessica1970 · 17/01/2020 18:19

I’m not sure why cutting up my nectar card is pathetic? If I think that something is wrong, surely I should stand by my convictions?

Not having a nectar card means I miss out on tangible benefits, but I’m happy to do this, as I don’t want to benefit from something which by association encourages hate.

Therefore not wanting to be a hypocrite, questioned whether I should also give up MN - not an unreasonable question I thought

I have never clicked on a DM link, as again I wouldn’t want them to get any advertising revenue from my click!

YABU on two counts.

  1. Mumsnet is not a registered charity
  2. Calling it the Daily Fail is cliched & boring
Bessica1970 · 17/01/2020 18:46

I never said Mumsnet was a registered charity ( neither is Nectar!), I also have never called it the daily fail - so both your responses are irrelevant!

WorraLiberty · 17/01/2020 18:58

You're still here OP? Grin

Bessica1970 · 17/01/2020 19:11

I am - as I said, I’m not sure whether I should be though! Genuinely torn as I enjoy reading the posts here (and don’t mind being disagreed with and teased when I deserve it 🙂). I’m not stropping off in a huff, I just need to decide whether to stand by my convictions and whether it would make any difference if I did!

WorraLiberty · 17/01/2020 19:12

It's just a website. Either post here or don't.

I'm struggling to work out what you want strangers to tell you?
