I hate exercising 😖

I have no will power to do and I am yet to find a type that I enjoy.

I've been to gyms, classes, running etc... And I never continue because I just don't enjoy doing it.

If you felt like this but then found a form of exercise you surprisingly enjoyed, what was it? What can I try?

It's not so much about losing weight as I'm not over weight but more just keeping generally fit.

Dancing. Any type really, it's more social whilst getting some exercise at the same time. I'm like you, hate exercise, don't need to lose weight but want to get fit. Dancing and hiking with friends, preferably somewhere with lovely views, are the only kinds of exercise I've found I enjoy.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 14/01/2020 16:09

I like walking. I also like swimming but hate the faffing, hair etc. I do a circuit training dvd which I don't like much but I only do it once a week so it's easy to just crack on.

redexpat · 14/01/2020 16:10

Yoga and zumba.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/01/2020 16:12

Bodyboarding. l love it and it is a surprisingly good workout. To be fair, you have to live near decent surf, so it's not for everyone.

BirthdayCakes · 14/01/2020 16:13

Hmmm - I'm not sure any of these answers are from people who genuinely hated exercise...

I am still trying to find something that I actually enjoy and look forward to. I did really like weight lifting but can't afford my personal trainer at the moment - and she always makes me do some cardio - she just can't help herself..

Meltedicicle · 14/01/2020 16:15

As a pp said, Zumba. If you find a good class it can be great for fitness. Body combat I absolutely loved and was gutted when they stopped doing the class I went to at our gym. I now do 7 minute workout apps at home, yoga and the occasional Parkrun.

No one in their right mind actually enjoys exercise, but needs must.

I’ve managed to go swimming at least 3 times a week now for over a year. I’m not fast, and I haven’t lost lots of weight, but it’s so good for me mentally. My secret is to join a hotel gym rather than a leisure centre or a David Lloyd style club. It’s quite small, and usually not busy, and it has a sauna and hot tub so you can feel you’re indulging yourself a little. There aren’t any poseurs and pouters either. The reason I keep going swimming though is that the water Is quite warm - not bath hot - but certainly a few degrees warmer than you’ll find down your municipal pool. I do about 50 lengths (it’s only an 18 metre pool) and when I get out and showered off I am so relaxed I could sleep on a washing line. Try your local Holiday Inn or Hilton. Mine works out at less than £10 a week.

Running

Hate the gym. I do like some exercise classes, but only those that keep you moving (tried Pilates once, so boring!). I struggle to find classes at the right time. So running it is.

On YouTube, I like HasFit workouts every now & again. The trainers are not too irritating, & there are loads of films to chose from.

FatherRabulaConundrum · 14/01/2020 16:19

Zumba. I love dancing and there are precious few outlets for my jazz hands these days. It doesn't even feel like exercise but still burns off about 500 cals a session according to my Fitbit. The class I go to is rammed to capacity with middle aged BalletTapModern kids.

I go three/fourtimes a week. Blush I've literally never found it so easy to face my trainers.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 14/01/2020 16:20

Zumba
Yoga flow
Pilates
Barre
Stretch and Tone

I don’t have the motivation to do stuff at home on my own, but classes with other people are good fun. I also want to make sure that I’m doing the exercise properly and the instructors do that.

jeremypaxo · 14/01/2020 16:21

Reformer pilates. You basically lie down on a bench and stretch for an hour. You don't get out of breath or sweaty but it tones you up loads.

ThebishopofBanterbury · 14/01/2020 16:22

Long walks are the only thing I can stand

shartsi · 14/01/2020 16:22

Body pump classes and running

FreedomfromPE · 14/01/2020 16:23

Swimming. Walking. Anything I can do alone without all the negativity I used to attract in a gym.

PenguinsOnParade · 14/01/2020 16:27

Hmmm - I'm not sure any of these answers are from people who genuinely hated exercise...

I genuinely did. I gave up PE at high school after 2nd year, was then diagnosed with a health condition a couple of years later which I used as an excuse not to exercise at all for over 20 years because I hated every single thing about it. Finding something that was fun for other reasons than the exercise is why I've kept up with the things I now do.

AllTheHippos · 14/01/2020 16:28

I used to HATE exercise. Never enjoyed it or did it regularly.

Now I've found a love of Clubbercise (aerobics with 90s dance music and glow sticks! So much fun) and weightlifting. Been doing both for about 5 years.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 14/01/2020 16:31

What is it that you dont like about it?

I dont think anyone can give good suggestions without knowing that.

TowerRingInferno · 14/01/2020 16:32

The best thing is to do it with friends so that you look forward to going because you want to see them (and you can support each other).

I do HIIT classes, Power walking and (very occasionally) running

WhySoSeriouss · 14/01/2020 16:32

Thank you!

I've been hmming and ahhhing about trying swimming as I used to really enjoy it when I was younger.

The only thing that worries me is... (you'll think I'm pathetically trying to make excuses here) that I worry about being cold 😣 I HATE being cold. If I get out of a pool shivering and freezing then I won't go again. Especially not in winter.

I have downloaded coach to 5k as well as a few people have said I should try running again. I've just never enjoyed it when I have done in the past but maybe it's because I was trying to push myself too far too soon? The wind and rain though is really making it hard to find the motivation to start.

I'm quite a shy person so tbh I know if I were to do something I'd likely prefer it on my own which is why I don't enjoy classes/ team sports really.

I can't do proper exercise at the moment because my pelvis is quite painful from pregnancy, however I have committed to taking 30 mins per day every single day for some kind of physical movement. Ideally, a 30 minute walk because fresh air is good, but if I can't get to do that because of DH's shifts then I do Yoga With Adriene on Youtube. I want to make discrete exercise as natural a part of my daily life as cooking and showering, not just something I do if I can be arsed.

My plan is to redo C25K when i'm on mat leave and ultimately enter a 10k race. I also want to build in a daily youtube workout- something like Lean in 15 and possibly a pay as you go gym session for a few heavy weights 1-2 times per week. Classes and things aren't going to work for my life so I need things I can fit in around family life.

puffylovett · 14/01/2020 16:34

CrossFit, weights, ninja warrior and indoor rock climbing. Grin

WhySoSeriouss · 14/01/2020 16:35

What is it that you dont like about it?

I don't know exactly. I don't like classes or group things because I'm quite shy and feel self conscious.

And everything else, well I just don't find it fun so my motivation for doing it just dwindles within a week or so. It's a chore when I do it and then I begin making excuses and justifying it in my head why I can't go today etc... Then before I know it, I've not been for 6 months haha.

Getting an allotment! It is very good exercise and I feel like I'm achieving something everytime. Plus being outside is brilliant for my mental health and general happiness. Gardening also works.
