To not understand why Amy Schumer is having IVF

SunflowerSuit · 14/01/2020 00:40

Eight months after her child was born?
In this country would they advise you against this so close to a recent pregnancy and birth?

I had IVF so understand how infertility means but she doesn’t seem to have said anywhere that her first child was difficult to conceive or conceived through IVF.

Because she has chosen to. Next!

BinkyandBunty · 14/01/2020 05:37

Sex selection?

Cluckyandconfused · 14/01/2020 06:09

With all due respect, Amy Schumer will not be accessing the same over stretched NHS infertility clinic as the majority of people on here.
Maybe she is receiving advice that is more tailored to her situation, or maybe the doctors are just following her wishes because she has the cash to pay for it?

Thehop · 14/01/2020 06:28

I wondered Too.

Seems odd to post such intimate pictures and be so open without saying why?

Fairylea · 14/01/2020 06:31

If she’s paying for it herself (which she is) and the baby will be born into a loving home let her crack on....!

NemophilistRebel · 14/01/2020 06:33

It’s egg freezing for now

She’s said she wants a sibling for her firstborn

When thatl happen she doesn’t know

People don’t put themselves through these procedures for nothing

The way she’s shown it it looks awful

Bear2014 · 14/01/2020 06:35

She had very serious HG and multiple hodpital admissions as a result. I assume they are freezing embryos and planning to use a surrogate?

cormorantyes · 14/01/2020 06:50

All this 'none of your business' angst!
A person who has chosen a life that makes them very well known has then chosen to post very personal pictures to her millions of followers and those millions are not supposed to display a single ounce of interest or curiosity about the unusual pictures!?!
Such an odd view to take. It is so natural and human to be interested in other people's lives.

Sunsetsandmoons · 14/01/2020 06:54

I think it’s ok to wonder, especially if you have had ivf yourself and have an understanding of how it works.

Sunsetsandmoons · 14/01/2020 06:58

I don’t know who Amy Schumer is btw but did wonder about Cameron Diaz when she appeared with a baby at 47 (didn’t lose sleep over it though.)

jcurve · 14/01/2020 06:59

I think you’re right here. What annoys me about Amy (and other irritating celebs like Lena Dunham) present their version of female issues as the only way. It’s, at best, attention seeking and at worst makes people think that only severe/distressing outcomes are likely.

Sparklybanana · 14/01/2020 07:03

If Amy wanted to keep it her business then she wouldn't have posted about it so it's perfectly valid to wonder! I was also surprised as it is tight - mainly because I'm not sure I'd even want to think about it if I was as sick as she was! But saying that, I did start the cogs about 10 months after my first as I had to stop breastfeeding before the drugs. I don't think she bf so not a concern. The loud tick tock probably driving things. I heard it and I was younger than she is!

GaaaaarlicBread · 14/01/2020 07:12

Calm down everyone !
OP I completely see where you’re coming from . Amy has been openly writing on Instagram about going through IVF and asked people if they’d ever done it (so presumably Gene wasn’t an IVF baby) she was asking for advise etc, but hasn’t talked about what’s made them do it which confused me because why only tell half a story ?
But the thing I questioned more was how poorly she was first time found with Gene, she had to cancel tours etc she was properly poorly with HG, I was shocked she’d want to go through it again !

AriadnesFilament · 14/01/2020 07:22

She is 38, has severe endometriosis, and is going through egg freezing in preparation for working out a route to add to their family in the future.

Or at least that’s my understanding of the situation.

In any event, neither you or I is her doctor and I’d wager that her doctor is in a far better position to be able to advise her what’s safe and not in her personal circumstances than a stranger on the internet.

savethecat · 14/01/2020 07:28

To those who are saying "none of your business", Amy Schumer has gone VERY public about this to the extent that she haseven published her phone number and has asked people who have experiences with IVF to call and chat with her

gallgal · 14/01/2020 07:31

As somebody that also has endo and had two HG pregnancies I can say with absolute certainty that I do not blame her. My second HG pregnancy broke me. A consultant offered to sterilise me during my second c section because I really can not carry any more babies. I declined the sterilisation but I am definitely not getting pregnant again, ever.

If I could have afforded a surrogate for DC2 I would have. 100%

nettie434 · 14/01/2020 07:34

There is no point in criticising sunflowersuit for speculating if you don’t realise Amy Shumer has been posting pictures of herself having IVF and has been asking for people to share their own experiences with her.

I also think it is reasonable to highlight the difference between the ‘standard’ advice to wait and the complexity of individual decisions. As other posters say, her age, history of endometriosis, and previous experience of pregnancy are all important factors for her. She has said she is freezing embryos but hasn’t yet decided what to do if it is successful I admire her for being so open about this and her experiences of motherhood. It contrasts with other celebrities who post photoshopped images of their perfect looking pregnant bodies or new born baby.

Nanny0gg · 14/01/2020 07:35

No idea who Amy Schumer is, but YABU it's not really any of your business is it?!

It is if the person in question is putting it in the public domain.

econowifey · 14/01/2020 07:39

She's been openly asking for advice etc. I saw her request but have no input on ivf but am an only child. As she seems to be particularly worried about giving her son a sibling, I said I had a lovely childhood and I'm sure her child will too whichever way it works out for her.

TheVanguardSix · 14/01/2020 07:42

I don't think she's having IVF yet, just collecting eggs, maybe freezing them for a while.
To be honest, her first pregnancy was so awful, I don't think I could go through that again. But her body, her choice and all that.

Lauren83 · 14/01/2020 07:43

Like PP said she has endometriosis, it left me with premature ovarian failure at 29 so needing donors eggs so I certainly wouldn't wait around if I was her! She may also be waiting to go on a long term treatment to halt the spread of the disease such as prostap or may have even been advised a hysterectomy isn't far away. Also most clinics happy to let you cycle again 6 months post VB and 12 months post CS

SunflowerSuit · 14/01/2020 08:00

Sorry. My point is from a health perspective. As someone who has had ivf and a child I know how gruelling it is and just wondered if this is something that would be advised against in the U.K. even privately.

I actually think it is great she is being so public about it but 8 months post birth seems quite soon to be having IVF. She seems to be saying she is doing so to give her child a sibling - but I wondered also how she has discovered so soon that she is unable to have a child naturally.

I know it is really none of my business.

'I imagine the first was and she is using frozen embryos she had left over from her previous round. '

No she posted about having egg collection.

TheYearOfTheDog · 14/01/2020 08:02

She is not old but if she wanted to have two it would make sense to get it all over with in one shorter time .frame.

SunflowerSuit · 14/01/2020 08:04

Thanks to those who have explained why they have done the same. I wasn't aware of her endo or previous fertility issues.
