to want to return all junk leaflets delivered by R Mail to postman?

JinglingHellsBells · 13/01/2020 12:13

Every Monday we get junk mail, usually pizza leaflets and Hillary's blinds. Plus more. It goes straight into the recycling paper box.

I wondered though if there is a better way to say 'no thanks'? Can the postman accept it if I refuse to take it in when he calls?

I just feel this waste of paper and the risks to the environment of using all the ink / dyes on this stuff is an issue.

It really winds me up that postmen now deliver junk mail. Of course you can refuse to accept it, like any other post.

Imtryingveryhard · 13/01/2020 12:16

I asked our postman about this as I have a no junk mail sign on my door that he ignores. He said he has to deliver it as per Royal Mail's instructions regardless of my sign. He suggested I contact the sorting office to discuss further. Like you, all my junk mail goes into recycling unread.

Baaaahhhhh · 13/01/2020 12:17

Drives me mad. DH tried to put a recycling box by the postbox, and labelled it "cut out the middle man - all junk mail in here please".

Spoke to postie though, and he said he HAS to post it through our letterbox otherwise he would be in trouble, possibly could loose his job. He is a lovely postie, so we won't get him in trouble.

You can fill in a form and send to RM that stops unaddressed mailings.

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 13/01/2020 12:18

What you need to do is go to your local delivery office and ask for your address to be removed from the 'door to door' advertising material mail list. It's valid for 2 years, so you'd need to re-do it after that.

Unless this is done, the Royal Mail have to deliver the stuff as they are being paid by the advertiser business to do it.

My husband was a postie and say that this method of opting out does work.

DesLynamsMoustache · 13/01/2020 12:19

Here's the form

JinglingHellsBells · 13/01/2020 12:20

It's not a mailing list, though.

These are leaflets. They are not in envelopes.

They are menu brochures from Dominos and the likes.

I've looked at the form and although I really appreciate you linking, I doubt it will stop brochures coming through the door.

I mean how will the postie know I've signed that form? He puts a bundle of leaflets through regardless of whether we have any genuine mail or not. How could he keep a list of every home on his rounds who doesn't want junk leaflets?

Save a load up and then put it in an envelope marked return to sender and put it back in the post box, unstamped.

CharityConundrum · 13/01/2020 12:26

Are they definitely coming from the postman? We have an enthusiastic leaflet deliverer that seems to follow the postie round and delivers their junk shortly after our regular mail.

If it is RM though, the unaddressed mail system does work in a way that simply handing back to the postie won't as it makes it 'official' at the sorting office and can't be mistaken for a lazy postie not doing their job properly.

It will mean that you don't get any council magazines or similar, I think, and I believe it includes canvassing leaflets as well (a bonus or a downside, depending on how you feel about that!).

DesLynamsMoustache · 13/01/2020 12:27

As for how it's works, I've no idea (perhaps previous poster whose husband is a postie might). I assume the leaflets are sorted into bundles with the addressed mail at the sorting office and, just like redirected mail, there will be a flag on the address. They don't carry around massive bundles of leaflets and peel one off each time - they're pre-sorted.

PechaKucha · 13/01/2020 12:27

The leaflets are sorted in house order same as the addressed mail, there will be a card put in your slot so the postie knows not to put any in there. It’s not perfect but it should stop most of it

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/01/2020 12:29

@CharityConundrum ours definitely come from the postie.

I'm definitely filling out that form. Thanks for posting @JinglingHellsBells Wink

DickDewy · 13/01/2020 12:31

We have registered to not receive any unaddressed mail. You have to renew it every year or 2.

The Royal Mail get an income from delivering this mail, so they don’t exactly publicise that you can do it.

Sometimes, we get a postman filling in for our regular one who will not realise. I’ve been known to chase him down the road in my dressing gown, clutching a fistful of unwanted leaflets.

scaredycatz · 13/01/2020 12:32

I'm a postie. Once you've filled in that form your address will get a little mark on it in your slot on the frame where we put your letters and junk mail in the morning before delivery saying 'no d2d' so that's how we know to not bring it anymore because we will never put it in your slot. Also there's not many that opt out so if you're on the same round all the time it's easy to remember the houses who've opted out.

Thumbcat · 13/01/2020 12:32

As a postie I can assure you that your postman doesn't want to deliver these leaflets any more than you want to receive them but unfortunately managers do check up and we could get into trouble if we don't.

Some weeks there can be up to five different leaflets on a round and the postmen and women have to spend time putting these into each address slot. They are an absolute pain and we don't get paid any extra for doing these.

The more people who opt out of door to door mailings the better IMO.

Sickofrain · 13/01/2020 12:33

I know the post person legally has to deliver it. I might put them all in my nearby postbox, then the RM will have to deal with the irritation/ recycling issue that I have to deal with....

Sickofrain · 13/01/2020 12:34

I have also opted out, but stuff still gets through.

Jaxhog · 13/01/2020 12:35

I either put mine in the recycling box or into the nearest postbox. I prefer to do the latter as it makes the point better.

ChicCroissant · 13/01/2020 12:38

Just opt out as people have said, it's not the postie's fault.

LunaLula83 · 13/01/2020 12:38

I'm going to put all mine in a big envelope marked royal mailonce a week. No stamp and stick it back in the post box.

Auridon4life · 13/01/2020 12:39

Almost as bad as Christmas gift packaging. Soo much waste and then we wrap it. Pizza boxes and fast food wrapping is starting to annoy me. Most of it is paper though.

Thumbcat · 13/01/2020 12:40

Also when I get home I have the very same leaflets on my doormat that I've been delivering all day.

AutumnRose1 · 13/01/2020 12:44

but something like Dominos will come from them, they have their own leaflet delivery people?
