To thank you for giving blood!

Just wanted to post a quick thread to thank any MNetters that give blood!

If it wasn't for people like you I would of died giving birth to my son, I would not get to see my children grow up! My little girl who is autistic would not get to hold my hand in the car (she is terrified of it and its the only way she will get in!) and I would never have experience my baby boys first smile today...

So THANK YOU! If you have ever given blood as small as it may seem to other people to me you are a life saver ❤️

I was born at 29 weeks and received a blood transfusion at 10 days old so have never been able to donate. I remember my grandad going to give blood and him receiving a pin for a particular number of donations or pints given. It was really special to him especially as 2 of his grandchildren were saved by blood donors. He felt it was part of his service to his community and I'm so grateful for all those who donate.

atomicblonde30 · 13/01/2020 10:28

Can I get in on this and say thank you too? The amazing people who give blood saved my life when I haemorrhaged horrifically during my first birth and my third, I wish I could return the favour somehow. You are all thoroughly good eggs!

DGRossetti · 13/01/2020 10:35

If this thread inspires just one person to start donating to make up for my having to give up after 79 pints, then it will have been worth it.

With the caveat that it can be quite an ordeal. Nothing to do with needles, and everything to do with getting an appointment.

DontCallMeBaby · 13/01/2020 18:22

The website is decent for appointments. The app is pretty terrible.

Moneypenny007 · 13/01/2020 18:41

I've actually signed up to give blood for the first time when the clinic comes to town again soon.
I'm hoping that I will be allowed to give blood.

DGRossetti · 13/01/2020 18:55

The website is decent for appointments.

Not if you are donating double platelets. Or were back in 2018.

yellowellies · 13/01/2020 19:14

I have done, and hope to again in the future, but can’t at the moment due to the meds I’m on

SanFranBear · 13/01/2020 19:21

I'm donating on Wednesday - it'll be my 45th. I donate at a fixed site and I love seeing the same faces each visit - my best friend is a nurse and said the Blood Service is a genuinely sought after post for many.

The snacks have really come on since I first started - ready salted Seabrook and a Penguin are my standard fare Grin

StargazyDrifter · 13/01/2020 19:26

Lovely thread to see! 😊 I’m really glad it all worked out well, must have been so scary! I used to be a regular donor until TTC/new baby which made me ineligible for various reasons. Almost needed a transfusion myself after the birth (but didn’t have one). I’m hoping to get back to donating one day. In the meantime, have been sending DH! Congratulations on your newborn and enjoy!

MargotsBumpyNight · 13/01/2020 19:33

Thank you from me and my 1 year old too. He had 6 blood transfusions by 7 months old. I am forever grateful to anyone who has ever given blood. You don't realise but you are absolute heroes Flowers

Lillybobtail · 13/01/2020 22:15

It took me a long time to get going (fear of needles and blood..) but I made it last year, and went a second time recently. It really was much better than I had expected, although no hot drinks now. I know several people who have received blood and felt I needed to pay it back on their behalf.

Acheekyfinger I have seen kids there, age maybe 8 and up. As long as they can be trusted to not run around or grab things I think it's fine.

The booking is awkward just because it is always fully booked, you have to book months ahead and I try to time it when I have childcare (my youngest would run about and grab things 😬), which I can't plan that far ahead.

baubled · 13/01/2020 22:19

Just to add a thanks from me too- also disappointed that I can't give it back.

Parky04 · 13/01/2020 22:34

I have given 38 times. When I received the text saying my blood went to Manchester Royal Infirmary (I gave blood the same day as the Manchester Arena bombing) I felt that my blood actually really matters. Maybe that day I helped to save a life. Hopefully I can reach 100 donations.

dontlikebeards · 13/01/2020 22:38

What a lovely thread. I started donating after my dd was I'll as a baby. She didn't need blood but I wanted to be able give something back to the system. I talk to all my children about it and hope that when they are old enough they will also donate.

Kaypee28 · 13/01/2020 22:46

I have 0 negative blood but I smoke; can I still donate?

hoopdaloo · 13/01/2020 22:46

I feel the same as you OP. I received a massive blood transfusion about 5 years ago. I almost died, and without that, I certainly would have. I was always too scared to give blood. And I feel so guilty that I am never going to be able to repay the favour.

It's a wonderful thing to do. Blood donors are absolute legends.

Corrag · 13/01/2020 23:04

Lovely thread, nice to hear stories about actual lives being saved. I'm donating again later this month. I look forward to doing it, even if it does make me feel a bit weak for a few hours sometimes. And I like getting the text to say where my B+ has been used.

Lillyhatesjaz · 14/01/2020 00:05

Another thank you from me. I needed blood when I became very anemic during chemotherapy

QueenOfTheFae · 14/01/2020 07:33

I've only done 18 successful donations, 3 or 4 iron too low.

I should have started earlier

Damntheman · 14/01/2020 08:16

I'm not allowed because I'm a brit :( Which is very sad as I've got a fairly useful blood type for Norway. But my husband gives blood regularly and I'm really proud of him for it! It's such an important thing. Adding my thanks to you all! My mother would have died without a transfusion when my brother was born.

Scarlettpixie · 14/01/2020 08:25

Lovely thread OP 😊

I resumed recently after a break of a few years (various reasons), my next one is in March.

Minai · 14/01/2020 08:50

Just jumping on this thread to also say thank you!

Received 3 transfusions after a massive pph giving birth to ds1 and was in a bad way. I almost certainly wouldn’t be here today without those transfusions. Hugely grateful to people that donate.

iolaus · 14/01/2020 09:45

I can't donate (have had both a transplant and a transfusion) but DH does (only started after I had a transfusion less than 10 years ago) - as of last week he's on 42 complete donations - 122 units (2 whole blood, then switched to platelets donation - so does 3 units every 3 weeks, unless the return fails in which case he has to wait longer)

We went to a blood donation awards dinner last year - there was one man who was on 1000units donated (333 physical donations) - he got a standing ovation

Missteebeee · 14/01/2020 10:50

I’m due to give donation 36 soon

I’m B- so my blood is always in demand. It usually ends up in neonatal which makes me very happy

EmeraldIsle81 · 14/01/2020 11:32

I wish the Give Blood adverts would say to people if you have one New Years resolution then make it to Give Blood!
You have all year to do it, so it's an easy goal to complete and by doing it you are saving lives.
I have it as my only constant NY resolution every year and always do it!
