to wonder who still reads Mills and Boon books

I keep seeing them come up on Amazon but I'm surprised they are still being published as they seem so outdated in this day and age - woman meets man, falls hopelessly in love, lives happily ever after.

tableclothing to the FLOOR!!!
The sisterhood is dead! Her breasts should’ve been perky!
Definitely interested in the 100k a year for writing 3 books, even if that a bit of a reach.😂

bridgetreilly · 12/01/2020 20:11

@TonytheDog, that's wonderful. I hate it when people sneer at Mills and Boon, partly because it has been a lifesaver for so many women (and a few men) like your mother. Anyone can submit to them, and anyone can write for them, fitting it in around other life responsibilities. It is a pretty amazing publishing model.

If anyone doubts that M&B authors can be amazing women, take a look at Mary Burchell who used the money she earned as an M&B author to help Jews fleeing from Nazi Germany - putting herself at repeated risk as well.

RedElephants · 12/01/2020 20:11

My mum has read them for years, she 76 in 9 days!!

Passmethecrisps · 12/01/2020 20:12

My mum did when I was growing up so not an old lady. I am not sure she does now but maybe. She easily reads a book a day so who knows! It’s easy escapism

ChangeInTime · 12/01/2020 20:17

TonyTheDog Your Mother sounds like she was a wonderful woman and it's sad that she was embarrassed about telling people. I'm sure that her books brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people and made their bad days a little brighter knowing they could escape into her books for a while.

WeWantSweet · 12/01/2020 20:20

I read this and thought 50 shades of Beige, then googled it and found it's already been done lol.

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 20:25

She died suddenly a few years ago. She was really the best mum and wrote kind of effortlessly. I've got all of her books and I'm really proud of what she achieved. I miss her every day.

Aww, that's lovely to read. Thanks😍

I still read them. I'm in my 30s. I read all romances pretty much but my favourite are new adult romances. They take me back to a time where I first experienced and explored emotions and relationships.

Ethelswith · 12/01/2020 20:31

I read a whole stack of them not so long ago when I was an inpatient.

Great fun, and I can quite see why so many are set in hospitals!

ArchMemory · 12/01/2020 20:32

When I was at university i found a carrier bag of Mills & Boon in the wardrobe. I read them and enjoyed them. They were easy reading and comforting as mentioned previously. I have not read more since though. Guess I’d feel a little embarrassed which is silly really.

doadeer · 12/01/2020 20:37

I should NC but no shame! I love them. When I've had stressful times in my life I find them light relief. I'm a fast reader so I've read them in about 2 hours. I like the historical ones 😂 I had an insomniac baby so I had hours and hours of breastfeeding sitting in bed in the middle of the night reading on my phone. I couldn't have handled anything more intense.

Sometimes it's nice to have something simple... And heartwarming.

Craftycorvid · 12/01/2020 20:37

Tony now that’s what I call a love story. Your mum sounds wonderful. ❤️

Nomorewine77 · 12/01/2020 20:38

I learnt a LOT about the birds and the bees from reading Mills & Boon as a 10 year old, courtesy of my Grandmother which makes me laugh as she came across as such a prude! I work in my local library and I can tell you they are issued on a fairly frequent basis, by both the young and old! They seem to be especially attractive to a group of pre teen girls who often disappear to the furthest corners of the library to have a good old giggle! Grin

doadeer · 12/01/2020 20:38

Ps I'm 29! And have been reading them since I was a teen when I saw one on holiday on a book swop shelf

TonytheDog · 12/01/2020 20:38

ChangeinTime she really was the best mum, she was quiet but fierce. She didn't interfere unless we needed her to and she always, always took our side. Unless we were in the wrong.
When we were teenagers she taught us how to defend ourselves and not to be the best version of ourself. She'd let us out of the house wearing all sorts of strange clothes and taught me how to sew - I'd buy clothes from jumble sales and adapt them. She let us make a mess and be children.

FuckWhenDidIGetOld · 12/01/2020 20:43

I have always wanted to write a book. It's bee very my secret dream for decades!
Never known what to write but I've just ordered some to try.

You may have inspired me! Thank you!

SusieSusieSoo · 12/01/2020 20:48

My mum!!

I'm in my 30s and read them. Absolutely love them! I tend to read a lot of heavy factual books as I enjoy learning about new topics. When I finish one of these, I always then read a M&B. They're light, predictable and easy to read so a good mind clearance from one heavy book to the next. My DH loves me reading out parts, we both find it hilarious

TonytheDog · 12/01/2020 20:54

FuckWhenDidIGetOld Mills&Boon are a formula - conflict/resolution/conflict/resolution. My mum wanted to write other books (and did but they weren't published) but M&B were what she knew she'd be able to do. It tools years of rejected manuscripts but she was very determined. Harlequin/Harper Collins treated her really well and she went all over the world giving talks. She and my dad were able to lead the life they'd worked hard for in not great jobs - until they died.
She kept telling me I should try and write and maybe one day I will. Or, I'll try.

Yellredder · 12/01/2020 20:56

Not seen them for years! About 25 years ago I went on a workshop to learn how to write them. Never inspired me to do so though!!

2020BetterBeBetter · 12/01/2020 21:00

I think the massive success of 50 Shades Of Grey which follows the exact same plot line shows how popular the whole woman meets man, falls in love, and lives happily ever after genre is.

livingmyslothlife · 12/01/2020 21:00

A friend of mine used to type them up all sent out on audiotape. She was very well paid and often recited bits to us snorting in laughter. She said they were a great company to work for as she could do it in her pj's. Imagining her sitting at home in her eeyore onsie typing the kinky bits made it funnier.

cees · 12/01/2020 21:01

I remember taking one of my mums and reading it under my blanket with a torch, my siblings would have ripped the piss out of me if they knew. I adored them as a teen and I will buy them on my kindle now and again.
