To hate gas ovens?

PlomBear · 12/01/2020 18:58

I have moved into military married quarters with DH.

Our oven is a gas one. I’ve always have lovely electric ones and hobs. The oven itself has to be turned on by using the ignition button to light the gas as you turn it on.

I hate it! The smell, the flame. Arghhhhh! Please tell me I’ll get used to it. I don’t feel safe using it when DH is out.

You will get used to it!

I have always used gas (and I'm over 50) up until a couple of years ago when ours had to be replaced and we could only find an electric one to fit the gap in our kitchen.

The gas hob is so much easier to control - instant response to turning the heat up or down.
I still think a gas oven cooks better.

Could you get the oven serviced just to put your mind at rest?

LeaderBee · 13/01/2020 12:35

I have an electric oven at home because the gas was capped by the previous owner and I opted for an induction hob simply because they are easier to wipe down; However, I much prefer to cook with gas, you just get a completely different result with roasts and yorkshires in them.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 13/01/2020 12:41

I was brought up with gas and hugely prefer it to electric.

Electric ovens are OK, just about, hobs and grills are pants though, you just don't have the control unless you go induction and at this stage in my life there's no way I'm forking out to replace all the pans I've built up over going on 30 years.

You'll get used to it in time, as I've got used to my electric oven.

Backtoreality1 · 13/01/2020 12:43

I am so glad to be back to a gas hob after several years of electric. It is so much better for cooking on the hob and gives much easier control. The oven I don't mind, but I really loathe electric hobs.

PhoneLock · 13/01/2020 12:45

Gas ovens are OK once you get used to them. Gas hobs are superior to electric, in my humble opinion anyway.

Gas grills, however, are the invention of the devil.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 13/01/2020 12:47

My old fashioned gas cooker with eye level grill died last year and we decided to invest in a new kitchen. As there was no alternative with more than four rings we reluctantly settled on favouring a six ring gas hob and built in double electric oven with grill at eye level. It's a compromise, I do prefer a gas oven, but the hob is the bees knees.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 13/01/2020 12:49

Got to disagree on gas grills, they're way superior to electric. Toast just doesn't taste the same from a toaster or electric grill, though gas cooked still isn't as good as held to an open fire.

It can't just be me who hates their food raw in the middle and on fire at the edges.

ScreamingLadySutch · 13/01/2020 13:11

Gas ovens are the choice of chefs!

Instant heat control. I went out of my way to find a gas hob gas oven stove.

But the love of my cooking life was my Aga. You get to know your stove and you develop a personal relationship with it. Our kitchen really was the heart of our home, especially in winter.

They have a lot of safety features nowadays, don't worry OP.

Not so much on fire at the edges as on fire all over. If you take your eye off the grill for a moment, the food gets burnt.

I must admit that my experience of gas grills is restricted to caravan cookers. Maybe domestic gas grills are better.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/01/2020 13:22

As someone who learnt to cook on & grew up with an electric cooker but has spent the last 10 years using gas, for me gas is infinitely preferable. The temperature control is just so much better. I will admit gas grills are the downside though. We also get lots of power cuts where we live so it means we can still have a hot meal too because sods law dictates it’ll go off just as we’re about to start cooking.

stripeypillowcase · 13/01/2020 13:25

you will get used to it, but yes, they are shit.
plus they don't get as hot as modern electric ovens and the heat is uneven.

2020bluegirl · 13/01/2020 13:25

@PlomBear

I prefer a gas cooker. Had an electric one for a year, when we had a private rental (when we were in between homes,) and I hated it. Found it hard to use (and especially the 'hob burner rings' that seemed to take ages to heat up.)

I found it took ages for the hob burner rings to heat up, and then they got too hot, (and the heat was too high,) and it was hard to get them down to the right heat. As a pp said, gas is much easier to control.

And I found it hard to use the grill (which was inside the oven!) And it was a pain not being able to use the grill at the same time as the oven. (Like if I wanted to grill fish-fingers, and cook oven chips.)

The electric cooker/oven also seems to use a lot of electric.

Much prefer a gas cooker, with an eye level grill. Had one my whole LIFE (apart from that one year,) and would never have an electric one again. (By choice...)

DesLynamsMoustache · 13/01/2020 13:29

Electric hobs are the pits but I don't mind an electric oven.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 13/01/2020 13:30

Grew up with a gas grill and had one for 20 years until last year.

Never set fire to anything. Perhaps caravan ones are rubbish but domestic ones are, in common with gas hobs, controllable to a far greater degree than electric. Much prefer them and I really, really hate having to bend down to a grill. Eye level all the way for me.

MissConductUS · 13/01/2020 13:34

Another fan of gas here. Our oven has an electric igniter. The gas valve won't open until the igniter is hot enough to start the gas burning, so there's never any smell. I thought these were universal for safety reasons, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I don't think it makes that much difference for things in the oven, but it's much easier and faster to cook with gas on the stove top.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/01/2020 13:34

I moved into a newbuild 16 years ago. For reasons eternally unknown it came with a brand new oven FOC. Very nice it is too - halogen hob, dual electric oven, all the timers and nice bits.

I have hated that oven since then, but the tightwad in me will absolutely not let me get rid of it and get a proper gas one. I envy gas hobs!

PandaCat · 13/01/2020 13:36

I hate our gas oven, love the gas hob though.

ACautionaryTale · 13/01/2020 13:37

I used to prefer gas hobs - until I got my induction one.

Absolutely brilliant and easy to clean - which is a consideration as I'm messy and DH is not.

My mother has an ancient gas oven and keeps getting it repaired as they just don't really exist anymore and she won't move to electric.

GooodMythicalMorning · 13/01/2020 13:39

I have an induction and hate it. The gas one here previously was much better for hob. Dont mind so much for oven but they deficit don't cook as well.

GooodMythicalMorning · 13/01/2020 13:39

definitely*

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/01/2020 13:48

I do a lot of Asian cooking and there is no better way than gas for that.
You want it to stay hot and angry for a good fry. If I put it to max, I want it to stay at max and I will turn it down when I choose.

Not "hot-but-oooh-Ill-turn-myself-down-a-bit-when-I-feel-like-it" stupid bloody electric hobs.

Highonpotandused · 13/01/2020 13:51

I don’t believe anyone can be a good cook with an electric hob. Devil red crop circles. Gas jobs all the way.

stripeypillowcase · 13/01/2020 13:53

I hate my gas cooker.
saving up to replace it with an electric cooker.

Twiggy71 · 13/01/2020 14:02

I love my gas cooker the oven bakes cakes and buns far better than an electric oven.
I am actually moving house and have to leave my gas cooker behind. Nineteen years its been in use and i fed my family using it.
