To boycott Morrison's?

It would seem that odd Christmas that Morrison's had a fairly widespread attack on their match and more cards. I accept that this is due to having the same passwords for other sites and I've been "pwned" but Morrison's were aware that they were being targeted and did not email their customers. Our points were used miles away from us, I'm sure nectar have a rule about using a large amount of points away from your "usual" store, it might be if you want to buy an item with your nectar points rather than discount on. Shop but still it's a security measure.

So I've lost £35 not a huge amount but I feel to boycott Morrison's as they have still not emailed their customers warning them what's happening.

They'll lose a lot more than £35 from me, I used to shop there a lot,

It doesn't even matter if you don't use the same password. As long as your email address has been compromised, Which they ask you to check with a link then that is their proof.

Yes it does, you should not use the same password for multiple sites you care about, in this instance it wasn't that her email had been hacked as that scenario could have been worse, you going round the houses and to say two centre authentication is needed still wouldn't have helped in this instance, it was a back door hack.

PanicAndRun · 12/01/2020 22:18

What I'm saying is that it doesn't matter to Morrisons. I had single use password(one of those random generated ones) for my account. Morrisons showed me my email had been listed on that website (have i been pwned or something) as compromised and that was that. They refused to admit any fault on their part and as the breach was on "my side" there was nothing they could do.

unbaffled · 13/01/2020 14:48

OP, perhaps I didn't explain very well. If you had got an email purporting to be from Morrisons asking you to change your password, the chances are you could have assumed it was a phishing attempt and just deleted it.

If you had checked online and seen reports that their security had been compromised, you'd have been even more suspicious.

spongejack · 13/01/2020 16:03

@unbaffled Morrison's could of course of informed people in store via posters, leaflets, print outs at the checkouts. Or providing leaflets with online delivery.

BlueRussianCat · 13/01/2020 16:06

There are many different password managers you can use to store and autocomplete your passwords.

Well yeah, I had Google set up to autocomplete my passwords, but what if my Google account gets hacked?

unbaffled · 13/01/2020 17:44

Yes OP, or perhaps customers could get their vouchers printed out instore like I do, instead of managing their account online?

PanicAndRun · 13/01/2020 18:21

A lot of people save their vouchers online so they can use for Christmas, rather than saving £5 here and there on the normal food shop.
A lot of people use delivery and rarely go to a store.

It's irrelevant.

Highonpotandused · 13/01/2020 18:40

I can't believe the people on this thread. Of course Morrison's should have informed customers asap. OP, have you spoken to their customer service for a goodwill gesture?

spongejack · 13/01/2020 19:12

@unbaffled but those expire as I've said previously! I preferred using the app.

OP posts:
spongejack · 13/01/2020 19:24

@unbaffled so you can't save them up for a specific Christmas or Easter shop!

So maybe Morrison's need to address that loop hole!

I've had nothing but problems with my More card. It doesn't seem to consistently link with my online shopping account and I've never managed to successfully redeem any vouchers from it. Apparently, according to one customer service assistant I e-mailed, if you don't use it for a few weeks it can just randomly delete any points you had on it. It could of course be someone else had stolen them, how would you tell if this was the case, is there a way you can check online? I do use different passwords for everything though, so if someone has hacked mine it's not because of that.

Nectar seems like a much easier to navigate system and I've never had any issues with that!

yorkshirebloke1 · 13/01/2020 19:45

I was also a victim of this, to the tune of around £100. I get the impression that Morrision's were afraid to send out an email to customers highlighting these many attacks as this would have been an admission that there was a problem.

I have stopped shopping there due to their almost robot like response to my emails to their customer services and my letter to the CEO. I received a very similar response to both emails and my letter.

Nectar points here we go.

PanicAndRun · 13/01/2020 20:44

@Stefoscope you can check if you download their app. There is a history of what points you gained, when, where also if any vouchers were used.

Stefoscope · 14/01/2020 00:16

@PanicAndRun, ah thanks. I'll download the app and see whether I have more luck getting that to work. Looking at my history it looks like the points are there and no vouchers have been used. However, it still doesn't want to update my balance with the correct number of points so I can actually request and use the vouchers!

MunchMunch · 14/01/2020 01:02

Op I haven't read the thread but just to let you know there's a Facebook group with quite a few of us on, it's called Morrison's missing points.

Someone had a call with Watchdog earlier and people have been tweeting Martin Lewis etc so hopefully there'll be some traction soon.

I lost £75 worth of vouchers.

Retroflex · 14/01/2020 01:24

@spongejack peoples lack of knowledge/interest in internet security just astounds me.

I'll make it easy for you...

  1. ALL websites have a risk of being hacked, or have you forgotten weren't interested in or affected by the wannacry malware which almost brought the NHS to its knees?
  2. Using a different password on every website is I thought common knowledge and common sense, we're in 2020 now...
  3. A 16 character password, minimum, which is a random mix of upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters is recommended to prevent, (or at least lessen the risk of) being hacked...
  4. You should change all your passwords on a regular basis. Keep a paper notebook in your house if you need help remembering them all...

It's not a specific shops responsibility to "tell you" that you may be at risk of people breaching your security measures, ie, your password...

spongejack · 14/01/2020 06:46

@Retroflex are you always so patronising? I also disagree that companies that have known attacks don't have a moral obligation to the inform clients.

Do you find people get irritated with the way they speak to you?

OP posts:
spongejack · 14/01/2020 06:46

@MunchMunch many thanks for that, I'll head over there!

OP posts:
londonrach · 14/01/2020 07:16

I use morrisons as best shop for us with what we buy. I dont understand how you can save the points. Once you enough they print off a £5 voucher which you can use within a year. Yabu re this as internet security your responsibility too.

MunchMunch · 14/01/2020 08:38

@londonrach you can change the settings in the app to either print vouchers in store or go paperless and then you have the option to collect the points and then print off as many as you want.

Lots of people save the points and then keep it for theIt Christmas shopping like I was until some little scumbag bought/hacked my details.

Morrison's have had a previous data breach by an ex-employee.

coconuttelegraph · 14/01/2020 08:44

@Retroflex are you always so patronising?

You've beaten me to it OP, I was thinking exactly the same, I don't know if reflex is male or female but there's some 'splaining going on there.

londonrach · 14/01/2020 09:30

@MunchMunch that explains it. I dont do app things so happy with printing off but explains how people can save them. I found morrisons and tesco best vouchers...not worth it with sainsburys but everyone shops differently

spongejack · 14/01/2020 10:16

@coconuttelegraph isn't there just! Imagine getting stuck in a lift with them!

OP posts:
Stefoscope · 14/01/2020 10:18

@Retroflex: 'Keep a paper notebook in your house if you need help remembering them all... ' This is terrible advice and common knowledge that you shouldn't do this,it is 2020 after all!

spongejack · 14/01/2020 10:28

Thank you @Stefoscope I was so utterly bored with read @Retroflex utterly patronising and inane comment I didn't get that far!

Keep a ducking notebook, with them all in the same place so easy to steal and easy to lose! Genius idea, I mean what could go wrong!
