Booking summer hols- going camping in the uk but also having 4 days in a hotel in France as a mini break to get some sun. The Uk Camping is very cheap - we have found a apartment-hotel in the south of France with a pool- looks really lovely & flights are cheap. Hotel is £750 for 4 nights - it feels very extravagant because all our holidays for the last 10 years have been camping- aibu to think it’s expensive? It’s a treat for us...

We have found cheaper places but without the pool- we thought after some sightseeing, pool good for the kids

If you love it and. An afford it go for it!

AppleKatie · 12/01/2020 08:50

Sounds like a bargain to me OP.

But whether or not it’s affordable to you and your family we can have no possible way of knowing. If you’ve done the sums and it’s not going to put you in debt then have a lovely time!

Everythingnotsaved · 12/01/2020 08:51

We’ve got time to save up & that’s why we are booking now

I think it’s generally I don’t know what’s reasonable in August as we are always in a tent normally!!!

Frenchw1fe · 12/01/2020 08:53

Presumably there are 4 of you and it's summer so about £200 per night. That's probably the normal price if it's in a nice place and a pool.

lovemenorca · 12/01/2020 08:55

Looks good
I’m paying that for 4 nights for a two bed air bnb flat in August in UK

lovemenorca · 12/01/2020 08:55

I will say though - is 4 nights enough? Might be better to get cheaper accommodation so you can at least go to five nights

OhTheRoses · 12/01/2020 08:56

Cheap as chips for 4 in the south of France. Can you link because I'm bemused. Possibly Pierre et Vacance or similar?

Everythingnotsaved · 12/01/2020 08:59

@ontheroses being deliberately vague as don’t want to out myself!!!

@lovemenorcan it really is all we can afford sadly! Would love a whole week

lovemenorca · 12/01/2020 09:02

My point is - less expensive accommodation but one night extra?

Snuffkindle · 12/01/2020 09:04

It sounds good to me. We are staying in one place in Germany for £495 for 2 nights, another for £275 for two nights and in the Netherlands £255 for 3 nights. All totally different places but the one thing in common is all round five star reviews. It always a.mission for us as we never have quite enough money so always truffling around for the best we can get on our budget! I'd say if it looks lovely,it's in a location you like, the reviews are good and you can afford it then go for it.

TheCanterburyWhales · 12/01/2020 09:07

What's outing about booking a holiday? Confused

It depends how many it's for, as others have said. If it's for 2 people, you'll find cheaper. If it's for 5 it's a bargain.

CherryPavlova · 12/01/2020 09:07

We use the Radisson in Biarritz for a quick sun and sand short break. We love Biarritz. It’s about £100 a room a night, so four nights for two rooms is around £800 for a 4* with pool close to beach.
Your’s seems a reasonable deal.

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 12/01/2020 09:08

4 nights but what time is arrival/check in & departure/checkout?

If you are arriving 8pm & departing 10 am then it’s a lot of money for a couple of days in the sun. If you are arriving 8am & departing 10pm that’s some lovely time in the sun.

ButtonMoonLoon · 12/01/2020 09:33

You could get a whole week in a Eurocamp/Landal type place for that price - if you’re ok with driving via the euro tunnel or ferry, that is.
But for a hotel it’s probably a good price for the Summer- but read the tripadvisor reviews as hotels in France can have teeny tiny rooms!

dudsville · 12/01/2020 09:35

Only you can say.

Luckybe40 · 12/01/2020 09:39

It’s way way too expensive. Go to www.homeaway.co.uk, choose your filters, pool, cost per night, location... and you’ll find beautiful places with pools for £100 a night. I’ve used them year after year and it’s always been amazing. Or check out air B&B, can’t believe people think £750 for 4 nights is cheap!

cobwebsoncornices · 12/01/2020 09:41

Have you checked out flight costs etc? At that time of year, we don't do short breaks as the cost of flights/whatever other means of travel is disproportionate to the cost of the stay overall.

Novembernickname · 12/01/2020 09:46

you could get a whole week in an air bnb with a shared pool for that. I have several times.

SayitBeit · 12/01/2020 09:48

If it has great reviews then its a yes from me.

tarheelbaby · 12/01/2020 10:32

I think a lot depends on where exactly and when exactly you are going. August is top season in France. The French go on holiday then too. If you are in a top destination like Biarritz you will be paying for that.

Does your £750 total include travel or (some) meals? Is that for 2 rooms or a family room? Is the property in a city/town? These make a difference to your cost per night. Also, many properties are Sat-Sat rentals so finding a property for just 4 nights might be harder/more expensive.

Out of curiosity, I've played around on some sites and even in Marseille in August you can have a room at a hotel with pool for just under £100/night.

Do have a play on some of the booking sites because you can probably do better. That said, if you love what you've found - go for it and enjoy a super holiday. This is supposed to be fun :)

You can probably do better on Homeaway/Homelidays or possibly even Gites de France or AirBnB. I have used Homeaway/Homelidays several times for summer hols in France and even for Easter hols in Barcelona where we paid less than £100/night but there was no pool.

When I book in France, we always choose a place with a pool b/c that's what the DDs like but we are usually also walking distance to the sea b/c that's what DH likes. We go to the southern Atlantic coast between Nantes and Bordeaux and book a 2 bedroom flat for less than £100/night.

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/01/2020 10:43

Depending on exactly where and when you are going I would check out Airbnb type websites.

On the face of it if it is a frontline apartment in the first week of August in Nice ten it sounds like a bargain

OTOH if it is miles from the coast you might get a cheaper alternative

Rezie · 12/01/2020 10:45

I don't have an opinion on this particulat case. But I was looking for a holiday for the summer either package or independent. Destination and time of travel is flexible as long as it's affordable. I noticed that the prices have gone up quite a bit.
