To ask which is the best alternative to milk?

Whatsername177 · 11/01/2020 11:45

I'm a vegetarian and curious about reducing my dairy consumption. Or full disclosure, I'm not going to classify myself as vegan because I wont be. I buy eggs from a farmer who has truly free range hens and doesn't cut off their beaks etc and I plan to continue buying/eating them. I also will probably occasionally eat cheese. So not ethically vegan but curious. I'm not a fan of soya and only really have milk in tea/coffee and recipes. Which alternatives have the best/closest taste to milk?

OP posts:
Stefoscope · 11/01/2020 12:30

I've not found any which taste close to milk, but I like unsweetened coconut milk best. It doesn't separate as much and leave the gunk at the bottom of hot drinks like soy and almond milk.

MrsJoshNavidi · 11/01/2020 12:34

Koko coconut milk is the one I like best. Not in tea though. I don't like any of them in tea. Tea is the only time I drink cows' milk now.

pigsDOfly · 11/01/2020 12:37

I like Oatly oat drink - they don't call it oat milk. It makes really creamy porridge as well.

Can stand soy or almond 'milk'.

BeccaG123 · 11/01/2020 12:39

Oatly Barista is very good - I find other non diary milks 'split' in tea or coffee but this one doesn't and tastes almost identical (somewhere between the green and blue one)

iamthedanger · 11/01/2020 12:40

Oatley barista in coffee is fab. Almond or coconut milk in porridge/with cereal. None of them work in tea ime; only time I have cows milk.

Halloweenbabyy · 11/01/2020 12:40

Oatly all they way

DGRossetti · 11/01/2020 12:42

+1 for Oatley Barista which froths beautifully for lattes etc.

Hemp milk is also nice, but doesn't froth Sad.

pigsDOfly · 11/01/2020 12:42

Can't stand soy or almond, that should be.

Confrontayshunme · 11/01/2020 12:44

I am on my third year of veganuary, and I like coconut blend or almond on cereal and only oatly works properly in hot drinks. I even find normal oat does still sometimes curdle in coffee but oatly doesn't.

MitziK · 11/01/2020 12:45

Oatley is good for coffee, coconut is good for lattes - but, in all honesty, plain, black, coffee and tea is just as nice, if not better because then you taste the drink itself, rather than the milk added to it.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/01/2020 12:45

There are quite a few threads on this subject in here, OP, if you’re looking for more suggestions.

We use Innocent oat milk because unlike the Oatley ones, it doesn’t have oil added to it. You can also recycle the plastic bottles unlike the

Citygirl2019 · 11/01/2020 12:46

Another vote for oatly barista

Streamside · 11/01/2020 12:46

Sample cappuccinos in places like Costa or cafe Nero. Its amazing how similar they are to milk. I'm a vegetarian who takes no dairy products but eats the occasional egg from some of the free range hens my family keep.
Oat milks are perfect for porridge and pea milk is the only one I'm not keen on.It's v high in calcium, 50% higher than cows milk but has a strange consistency and colour.
Provamel milks of all kinds in Holland and Barrett are really good and the soya cream substitute is great for use in pasta. Many of the substitute milks in Holland and Barrett are on the buy one, get one for a penny offer.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/01/2020 12:48

Whoops - meant to type unlike the tetrapaks, which aren’t recyclable.

MaggieAndHopey · 11/01/2020 12:48

The thing about plant milk is that you don't need to stick to just one type. I like Oatly barista in coffee and on my muesli. It also works well in cooking because it doesn't separate. But for baking I use soy milk or almond milk.

Streamside · 11/01/2020 12:49

I meant cappuccinos in Cafe Nero etc using the alternative milks.Their baristas are great at offering advice on which froth best etc

Shhhhh223 · 11/01/2020 12:49

I’m exactly the same as you OP and after much, much buying and trying many many various milks the best for me are

Aldi’s soya milk unsweetened in Tea

Oatly barista in coffee ( all others seem to separate and curdle in coffee )

I find soya best for cooking savoury sauces such as bechamel

motherofawhirlwind · 11/01/2020 12:49

I use Oatly barista for porridge and OH's coffee, and I'm just drinking tea black as I prefer that anyway.

NotSureYet · 11/01/2020 12:49

I find the Oatly oat milk great for coffee and porridge/cereal. I can't get on with it in tea though. It really effects the flavour. I find the roasted unsweetened almond milk best for tea, but for literally nothing else. Almond milk is terrible for a latte. Coconut milk I find tastes too distinctive so gives everything you put it in a really coconut-y flavour. Soya milk works well in a Starbucks hot chocolate. I couldn't tell the difference there.

butterandbread · 11/01/2020 12:49

I’d say my favourite, particularly for tea (which I drink a LOT of), is actually Asda smart price unsweetened soya milk. Doesn’t separate, doesn’t overpower the tea. Aldi unsweetened soya is also great. Family members that have cows milk in hot drink can’t always even tell the diffference if I use either of these.

RhymingRabbit3 · 11/01/2020 12:51

We found oat has the mildest flavour so best for hot drinks. Hazelnut milk is delicious on cereal but harder to find

GoldfishGirl · 11/01/2020 12:51

For tea, hemp milk if you can find it.

My advice is to alternate milks. I am also very conscious of not having too much soya.

I alternate almond (always unsweetened) and koko atm.

GoldfishGirl · 11/01/2020 12:52

Tesco does a cheap almond one.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/01/2020 13:21

Almond milk production is disastrous for bees, as I found out from one of the other threads about milk alternatives.
