Burger King stupidity over its meat-free whopper

Why go to the effort of creating a meat-free burger only to cook it on the same grill as the others? Why limit your market to ‘people who are choosing a meatless option but don’t mind if it’s covered in meat juices?’ Seems incredibly shortsighted to me to overlook a large segment of the vegetarian/vegan markets.

I’m a vegetarian and no I wouldn’t buy this.

maybe start putting human manure back on fields. Best fertiliser ever.

"The definition of veganism according to the Vegan Society "

Do they definitely OWN the definition, forever frozen in time, their wording is the only one that can be accepted? Why do they have legitimacy to be the ultimate authority and claim sole ownership over what the word means? Genuine question. Legal ruling recently talked about "ethical veganism" which suggests there is definitely way more than one sort of veganism.

I know A LOT of people who are NOT vegan according to the definition above. They won't give a shiny about that definition or have any respect for it being the "One and only true" definition. They avoid eating animal products for lots of reasons that have nothing to do with animal welfare. Who can say they are wrong?

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:23

maybe start putting human manure back on fields. Best fertiliser ever.

And risk catching diseases? No ta 😂

SaaauuusierGrrr · 11/01/2020 17:24

@Boombastic I've already addressed this exact point in this thread. There's a world of difference between the unintentional killing of insects and the forced breeding and mass torture and slaughter of animals specifically in order to eat their corpses.

It's a big difference and let's face it, the only time that people give a shit about these insects is when they're trying to use whataboutism and false equivalency to justify eating corpses.

It's just a lazy and unintelligent tactic to undermine the efforts of people who are genuinely trying to make a difference.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/01/2020 17:27

I don’t really understand what the issue is, do all vegans really believe that all restaurants have a separate kitchen to cook and prepare their meals

No but then again do expect that the vegan/vegetarian food isn’t swilled in meat juices and blood

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:33

@SaaauuusierGrrr I disagree with you.

If you clear a field for crop growth you are intentionally destroying animals habitat and killing them. Farmers intentionally lay traps to kill animals to stop them eating crops, they intentionally use machinery to harvest crops knowing that they are killing millions of insects and small mammals. I don’t like intensive factory farming (that’s why I don’t eat meat myself) but I think it’s stupid to think you are morally superior to a person who eats meat when your vegan food had exploited animals too. I think I just hate the evangelical black and white thinking of your average ethical vegan.

Newmetoday · 11/01/2020 17:35

As I said before, all 3 kitchens I worked in, cooked the food on the same grill. There must be hundreds doing the same.

lljkk · 11/01/2020 17:35

Cow manure is currently spread all over fields to grow crops. Cow manure is full of E. Coli, cryptosporidiums, rotavirus, coronaviruses, Bovine diarrhoea viruses, lots of phages, giardia... I don't think people poo is dirtier than cow poo. My local sewage plant products a people poo product that is totally sterile but only used on some test agricultural fields, they can't sell it commercially.

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:35

@Oliversmumsarmy well whatever you do don’t eat tomatoes, they’re grown using blood and bonemeal 😂

Takethatandparty30 · 11/01/2020 17:36

I'm vegan, and this wouldnt bother me.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 11/01/2020 17:38

I'm vegan, and this wouldnt bother me.

If you’re happy to eat something cooked in animal juice, then you’re not vegan. Just calling yourself one, doesn’t make it so.

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:38

@lljkk that’s interesting, why can’t they sell it commercially?

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:39

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily get over yourself, people can call themselves whatever they like, and they can eat whatever they like. It’s not up to you ya know 😂

Yupimahelecopter · 11/01/2020 17:41

Same as me @Takethatandparty30

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2020 17:43

get over yourself, people can call themselves whatever they like, and they can eat whatever they like. It’s not up to you ya know 😂

The problem comes that the word “vegan” has a meaning. People eating burgers covered in meat juices aren’t vegans, but when they say they are other people think that vegans are happy to eat that and you’re served inappropriate food that you have to decline.

It’s fine not to be a vegan and eat what you want. The issue is how you describe yourself.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 11/01/2020 17:44

They can call themselves whatever they like, it doesn’t make it true, Boom, so you can calm down pet.

SaaauuusierGrrr · 11/01/2020 17:44

@Boombastic

And you might have had a point if meat eaters or people who ate animal products didn't also eat grains, fruit, nuts, pulses and veg.

Every diet has some amount of destruction, which is why the vegan society definition includes "as far as is possible and practicable".

Which, by the way, is as far from "black and white" as you can get.

Nobody ever calls out people who eat pork as being hypocrites if they say they think it's wrong to go out and kill a bunch of puppies yet that's arguably a much closer ethical line.

Like I said, you don't really care about insects, you care about feeling like you scored a "gotcha".

And the reason why you feel like that is because deep down you feel guilty that you're not doing as much as you can and want to deflect.

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:45

@PurpleDaisies there Are different types of vegans though, those who do it for ethical reasons and those who do it for diets etc Perhaps vegans need a pope type figure to keep you all in check 😂😂

stripeypillowcase · 11/01/2020 17:47

wrt human 'manure' there is the issue of medicines residues plus human parasites.

north korea for example has a big problem with gut pesticides as due to poor land management human waste is used to fertilise fields.

Geauxtigers · 11/01/2020 17:48

I thought I read somewhere a month or two ago when it was announced that you could request to have it cooked on a vegan friendly grill but it wouldn't have that flame grilled taste?

lljkk · 11/01/2020 17:48

(why can't they sell the processed human poo commercially)

We didn't get a detailed explanation when the sewage plant gave a public tour, but I think gist was that there's no regulatory framework for what is "safe enough", so they have no governing approval to sell. The sewage plant DOES salvage a lot from sewage that they sell on: bitumen for roads, metals, stones, textiles & rubbish that goes to landfill or gets incinerated... but can't sell the dried remaining human poo. The tour guide was saying that all the staff take it home to fertilise their gardens, that the farmers love it, too. This is the dried organic reside left after they separate everything else they can including liquids & heat-treat heck out of the organic components.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 11/01/2020 17:49

there Are different types of vegans though

You’re right about that. There’s vegans, then there’s the virtue signallers that’s want to use the term, but aren’t actually vegan.

Vegans verses liars. It’s not difficult.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 11/01/2020 17:49

*that want...

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2020 17:50

there Are different types of vegans though, those who do it for ethical reasons and those who do it for diets etc

Yes but the thing they have in common is that none of them eat any meat or animal products. They’re not vegan if they do. It’s not rocket science.

Boombastic · 11/01/2020 17:51

Your argument is so basic and is trotted out all the time. Vegans are hypocrites when evangelising to others. You can’t get to feel good about eating tomatoes grown in blood and yet at the same time slag off a veggie burger cooked on a meat grill it’s hypocritical beyond belief.

I’m happy with my choices of not eating meat for 30 years. But I don’t preach to others. My best friend shoots and kills her food. She doesn’t feel bad deep down. Don’t assume other people’s feelings it’s a bit psychopathic 😂

Purpleartichoke · 11/01/2020 17:51

Restaurants in the us sold out of these types of burgers very fast. So fast manufacturers can’t keep up and many places had to take it off the menu. There is a huge market for “less meat”. They don’t need to market to vegetarians or vegans To make a profit.
