To think this is unprofessional?

My housekeeper left me a brochure for some beauty products with a note saying how brilliant they were and that she could get me a great discount. I looked it up and it is an MLM.
Am I being unreasonable to think that as my employee she shouldn’t be trying to flog me stuff?

OP posts:
StillCoughingandLaughing · 11/01/2020 01:04

Housekeeper? Wtf - do you mean cleaner?

I’m sure the OP knows what she means.

OP - just bin the brochure and tell her you don’t shop in this way if she asks.

NotTerfNorCis · 11/01/2020 01:06

MLMs are pretty exploitative, the people who get sucked in usually don't make much money. If any.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/01/2020 01:08

I'm surprised people are being so Hmm to the OP in this particular instance.

MLMs and those who peddle them on to their every acquaintance by making an impolite grasping nuisance of themselves are usually universally torn to shreds on MN

Coughy4u · 11/01/2020 01:15

Ugh so so tacky. Id sack her.

june2007 · 11/01/2020 01:18

Just give her the brochure and say it,s not really your thing. YABU I have worked with people in variouse jobs who do selling and have been offered the brochures and it,s not my thing either but I don,t go high and mighty over it.

They are. But leaving one brochure for your employer isn't really on the same level as constantly abusing your friendships or leveraging a position of power, is it? The cleaner is in the weaker position and hasn't been pushy. It would be overstepping to handle it, at this point, in any way other than to politely say "No, thanks". If she kept on about it it would be a different matter.

Butchyrestingface · 11/01/2020 01:36

Come now, she can flog you stuff AND tug her forelock to t’mistress both.

SandyY2K · 11/01/2020 01:38

It would irritate me, but I'd just tell her I'm not interested.

IncrediblySadToo · 11/01/2020 01:39

‘Employee’ - so you pay her tax & NI etc do you?

If not, she works for herself, not you!

She’s a fool doing MLM, but leaving you a note and brochure us hardly a flogging offence. No different to the ten ton of advertising shit put through the door daily 🤷🏻‍♀️

rocketmen · 11/01/2020 01:50

idk, I'd be pretty miffed if anybody I knew started trying to shove MLM shit at me. It's all awful, manipulative and harms women.

ILearnedItFromABook · 11/01/2020 02:12

I agree that it's not exactly professional, OP, but I don't think I'd do anything about it unless she continues to bring it up. If she asks about it, telling her you're not interested should put the matter to bed.

Scattyhattie · 11/01/2020 02:15

It doesn't seem unreasonable to leave a brochure & is fairly easy to decline. As long as they accept your not interested & don't continue to leave brochures.

I find it sad as they're trying to improve situation and is sold to them as a flexible way to earn, but often end up doing lot more unpaid time. Isolating themselves in process as people they know get fed up of the sales/recruitment pitches and instead surrounding themselves with other MLM bots who all seem to be bit brainwashed believing that will get rich if keep at it as those higher up the pyramid push the lifestyle.
It encourages them to see everyone as a potential customer, though the real aim is recruiting others to join the MLM as get more money that way.

Not sure if all of these companies as bad but have known someone past few years whose been sucked in & reminds me of Del boy's "next year we'll be millionaire's"

GiveHerHellFromUs · 11/01/2020 02:28

Did you look it up with the intention of buying something?

poppycity · 11/01/2020 05:46

Honestly please don't overthink this. Know she likely needs more money and thought this was a possible means. No different to millions of other people. Don't judge her from your position of power.

recrudescence · 11/01/2020 07:24

Being your housekeeper isn’t really a profession as such.

OneDay10 · 11/01/2020 07:29

So?? Just ignore it. Honestly you needed MN to tell you that?

MarieFromStTropez · 11/01/2020 07:33

People that get caught up in MLM schemes temporarily lose their minds. Several of my friends have gone through this. Actually one was my DD’s school teacher who jacked in her teaching career to sell Forever Living. She lasted about a month, lost all her friends and has been unemployed ever since.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 11/01/2020 07:37

Have you tried talking to her about it? She most likely doesn't know how bad mlm schemes are and how she will lose money (and friends). The kind thing would be to talk to her about it before she really gets sucked in, surely?

GoFiguire · 11/01/2020 07:37

Is she your full time Housekeeper or your 2-hour p/w cleaner?

Plumbus · 11/01/2020 07:40

Maybe she's not debt free (apart from her mortgage obvs)?

Lilimoon · 11/01/2020 07:53

As her employer what % do you pay in pension contributions OP?

JanusLooksBothWays · 11/01/2020 07:57

Why all the nit-picking about the woman's role? Bizarre.

PhilCornwall1 · 11/01/2020 08:12

My housekeeper left me a brochure for some beauty products with a note saying how brilliant they were

Is that you Megan?

Innertwist · 11/01/2020 08:14

Maybe add a clause in her contract that she can only work for you exclusively (and not to solicit any of your family or friends into her network for 12 months after she leaves your employment)

I'd like to see that contract. Confused

ZeroFuchsGiven · 11/01/2020 08:14

My cleaner brings me an Avon book I must sack her immediately.
