To feel overwhelmed by makeup?

I’m 48. I like to wear makeup but I’m feeling a bit stuck in a rut.... have worn the same foundation for years (Estee Lauder Double Wear), same colours (nude on the eyes, red or pinky beige lips & natural blusher). I don’t feel I suit it anymore... my skin has changed in tone & texture, and I feel old. I have watched loads of YouTube/Instagram videos & I’m completely blown away by all the makeup looks....But it all seems too much. Layers & layers of it, and they’re all really young. Had a go at applying lashes, and honestly, I thought I looked like a camel. Long gone are the days when I looked forward to my weekly Blue Jeans & Jackie magazines & practiced the latest look lol... So I’m wondering, are there any makeup instagram/YouTube channels for women in my age group?

Try
Lisa Eldridge on youtube

Instagram (have typed their actual IG handles)

Hannahmartinmakeup
Katiejanehughes
Nicolachapman
Samchapman

TheGreyInThisCity · 10/01/2020 20:00

I second all those suggestions, Lisa Eldridge and Hannah Martin in particular. They both do really good videos which aren’t aimed at teenagers!

DoloresTheDonkey · 10/01/2020 20:00

Try looking up Trinny Woodall too as well as Lisa. Her Trinny London brand have some good videos.

I also like Nadine Baggot for inspiration.

Ps I'm a good deal older than you and I've finally got the nack of more mature makeup.

YeahNahWhal · 10/01/2020 20:03

The Pampered Wolf is on YouTube. She specialises in make up for people over 35 and ropes in her mum too, to show over 60s tips (my 40s skin falls somewhere in between Gemma and her Mum lol).

Craftycorvid · 10/01/2020 20:05

Get yourself along to a good retailer and ask for a make up demo’. You really don’t have to buy the products and it may give you some new ideas.

BiscuitBean · 10/01/2020 20:07

Wayne Goss on YouTube is very good, a proper makeup artist - not just a YouTuber who likes makeup. He's got tonnes of videos showing makeup looks on different ages, tips for various eye shapes, skin types etc and is very much an advocate of makeup that looks like your skin but better 👍

MrsTWH · 10/01/2020 20:07

Definitely try Pampered Wolf, Wayne Goss, Sam & Nic Chapman.

Taddda · 10/01/2020 20:08

I was shocked at the 'layers and layers' with the youtube tutorials! I've also worn the same Estee lauder/Clinique/YSL make up for years- My skin has also changed after two Dd's so I've switched it up recently but spent a fortune on trying- Mac (too heavy), Lancome (oily), smashbox (their contour kit is actually lovely, also their light powders)...

Thanks for the thread and the YouTube recommends, off for a look....

BunnytheBlueWhale · 10/01/2020 20:09

All of the above sound good OP plus you could go to a make up counter to talk about what you want and have some things tried out on your skin

DoloresTheDonkey · 10/01/2020 20:15

I should have said, the one products I think every older woman needs is Futuredew from Glossier, it gives a lovely dewy glow.

DollyPomPoms · 10/01/2020 20:20

Charlotte Tilbury? Perhaps book in for a lesson? I was very clear that I wanted a no fuss look and came away with five products that I love and suit my skin/age.

dms1 · 10/01/2020 20:41

Thanks so much for all your suggestions!

what a great Thread OP.... I'm in a similar rut tbh.. and I'm trying to not over compensate because my skin is changing terribly quickly... Flowers

violetbunny · 10/01/2020 20:46

Lots of brands will do makeup lessons. Always best to book in advance as some counters can get pretty busy. I think Bobbi Brown generally do quite a good job if you prefer a more natural look.

lurker2003 · 10/01/2020 21:05

I second Wayne Goss

FrankRattlesnake · 10/01/2020 21:31

If you’re near Liverpool, Birmingham, London and possibly Manchester, there is a company called Morphe (pronounced morph e). They are aimed at younger people, however I (as a forty something) was drawn in by the bright colours. I went in had a free consultation and realised my brushes were a massive problem now my skin is a little more elastic. They also showed me some good techniques for shadow application.

I don’t wear foundation so can’t comment on those products, but you can blend and intensify the colours. Colour pallets and brushes are also reasonably priced!

dms1 · 10/01/2020 21:43

@FrankRattlesnake. OMG the brushes!!! I don’t know what the half of them are for! Thank you for the Morphe tip.

FrankRattlesnake · 10/01/2020 21:49

@dms1 I know!!! They recommended softer brushes that don’t pull the eyelid - work a treat, I’m building up a collection!! I’m currently desperate for the m443 brush (a soft white fluffy blender!)

xsarax · 10/01/2020 22:17

Another vote for Wayne Goss here , I always struggled with blusher application until I watched his videos he’s brilliant xx

BarbedBloom · 10/01/2020 22:39

Lisa Eldridge. She does looks for older women using older models. She is also lovely and soothing

dms1 · 11/01/2020 00:33

Loving your suggestions!! Currently up late watching TOTP 1989 lol. My makeup is not the only thing stuck in the past!

Violet bunny

Bobbi Brown seconded.I went into the Covent Garden branch and they helped sort out what I wanted help with. They show you the products they used and you can then select what you would like to buy. I suspect many of the other make up retailers do much the same. I got the perfect foundation from BB so it was well worth it. Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation is also fab. Look at a Charlotte Tilbury for older skin on YouTube.

Effiedg · 11/01/2020 02:28

PS Lisa Eldridge is also fab. She does a good facial massage tutorial amongst others.

hellcarryingahandbag · 11/01/2020 07:11

Clinique is very good for the mature woman (so I’ve heard, I’m not a mature woman).

Polarbearshare · 11/01/2020 07:45

I love suzie o'neill she does lots of instagram videos on how to apply.
