We have some wild sika deer regularly in the field behind the house. Moreso in winter when they come down off the hills. They are very sweet with their white bums.

Maydayredalert · 10/01/2020 21:06

I had a mum and baby living in my garden last year.

They stripped all my fruit overnight, and barked at me the one time i stumbled across them. I never knew deer could bark.

But they are transient animals and it is unlikely they'd stay in your garden unless it was secured and that just seems cruel.

Yarboosucks · 10/01/2020 21:08

We have one that cleans up our windfall apples for us. It is getting bolder and bolder and no longer runs away from us. I have no intention of making any form of physical contact though because it is a wild animal and those horns can do damage!

Jaxhog · 10/01/2020 21:10

They do taste nice.

Jaxhog · 10/01/2020 21:11

Not capybara! They are like huge creepy guinea pigs. Very unnatural.

FlamingoAndJohn · 10/01/2020 21:13

I have one that walks by my external classroom door at 11am every day if you want to pop over.

Thelnebriati · 10/01/2020 21:14

They aren't called barking deer for nothing.

Oh yes they bark. They also live behind my house, you can here them barking all night.

lostsoulsunited · 10/01/2020 21:19

Capybara are gorgeous.

Maydayredalert · 10/01/2020 21:19

They make such a racket! Grin

lljkk · 10/01/2020 21:22

I saw a Muntjac recently & honestly thought it was a giant cavy (capybara).

I want an entire zoo, capybaras are among my first. What's not to love about a giant guinea pig?!

Barbie222 · 10/01/2020 21:32

They will smell.

Davros · 10/01/2020 21:34

I'd like an armadillo but I don't think the cat would be happy

CheshireDing · 10/01/2020 21:39

Nah ChilliMayo* it’s Tapir you want really, they are soo huge and cute 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2020 21:44

Ahhh I wanted a capybara when I had my own herd of guinea-pigs . I thought they could snuggle it at night (and save me running a heater in their Pighouse) and they'd eat the hay etc.
I could take it for a walk like a dog but with less offensive shit (guinea-pig pooh is non smelly , digested vegetable matter in neat little losenge shapes)

Main downside (apart from eating the bark off all my trees) is they LOVE water so would haul themselves off to bed wringing wet . My guinea-pigs would be discusted at having a soggy rodent to hug .

happycamper11 · 10/01/2020 21:48

Yes definitely a tapir too - dd10 wants a dik dik 😆

Bunnybigears · 10/01/2020 21:51

I've always wanted a penguin so I think you should get a muntjac deer to set a precedent.

BBInSleepsCounting · 10/01/2020 21:53

Deery me, what a silly i-deer.

For all the reasons stated by pps.

ChilliMayo · 10/01/2020 22:01

Love a tapir. Love em.
Especially when they are babies, all stripy.

Love a prairie dog too.

ChilliMayo · 10/01/2020 22:02

The llama farm next door has babies.
I'm surreptitiously making a hole in the fence so the babies can come visit.

Usernamesarenotmyforte · 10/01/2020 22:20

When I was in primary school we went on a visit to a zoo that had muntjacs roaming free. This odious boy who basically bullied the rest of the class was chasing them round and round. All the adults were telling him not to. One amazing little muntjac turned around, ran directly at him and pissed on him. They will always have a place in my heart.

CointreauVersial · 10/01/2020 22:25

Squirrels bark too (well, ours do).

FizzyIce · 10/01/2020 22:30

We have them round where we live and they’re noisy bastards !
They sound worse than foxes ,they scream (bark) like they’re being murdered .
I still love seeing them on the school run though

Butteredtoast55 · 10/01/2020 22:34

YABU They are wild animals and shouldn't be kept as pets.
