To ask what you like about living in the U.K.?

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:04

I'm pregnant, and we are moving back to the U.K. I'm nervous about it.

So, could you tell me some of the reasons you love living there to calm me down a bit?

A lot of the time, I read quite a lot of negative things, but I know the positives out way the negative!

Help! Grin

Where are you moving from OP??

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:06

Germany!

flyingchip · 09/01/2020 20:07

and where to? I live in the NE so have wonderful things to say about here, but that may not help if you're somewhere else Grin

aroundtheworldyet · 09/01/2020 20:07

You don’t have to eat sausages everyday! Grin

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:09

North West England Smile we will be staying with my DPs family in north London for the first few months though!

The weather (never too cold or hot), beautiful green everywhere, British people, being able to walk around freely without fear of violence, public libraries, the smoking ban, the NHS (even though it's nowhere near as great as it was) £10/month pre payment prescriptions.
I'm sure there's lots more.

midnightmisssuki · 09/01/2020 20:10

I like the seasons. I like how big the uk is - that you can drive for hours and be in another part but still in the same country. We live in London and I love how cosmopolitan it is here.

Parttimers · 09/01/2020 20:11

What makes you nervous OP? I would be too I suppose as Germany does have many positives. I suppose it depends on where exactly you are returning to?

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 09/01/2020 20:11

The pubs Grin

aroundtheworldyet · 09/01/2020 20:13

Are you German

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:13

Parttimers mostly peoples reactions when we tell them we are moving to the UK (both Germans and expats alike).

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:14

I'm not German, but my partner is technically - although he went to school in the U.K. and his parents live in North London.

Being able to live life pretty much religion free is a big one for me.

ViaSacra · 09/01/2020 20:15

As above, the weather. I hate extreme heat and I hate extreme cold. I like living somewhere that doesn’t get snow four winters out of five, and where it rarely goes above 30 Celsius in the summer.

Leedsmom · 09/01/2020 20:15

Yes pubs are good!
Beautiful scenery and walking in countryside and coastline
The bbc and tv in general
Most major cities are safe and fun

Leedsmom · 09/01/2020 20:18

Variety of cuisines and range of price points-from fish and chips to fine dining (and pubs in between)
People are generally friendly
Plenty of opportunities to meet new people through baby groups etc

OopsUpsideYourBed · 09/01/2020 20:18

The cultural quirks. Like if someone says Good Morning to you and it's actually after noon, then you must respond Good Morning back so you don't draw attention to their error.

mbosnz · 09/01/2020 20:18

M&S GF flour.

Robins.

Pubs.

Christmas in the dark.

People are so bloody enthusiastic about stuff like Christmas, Halloween, etc.

Weepingwillows12 · 09/01/2020 20:18

The countryside and range of scenery in a quite small area,
The history and beautiful buildings
The sense of humour of a lot of brits,
In london, the easy access to culture,
The trees and greenery
The food (range of cuisines available)
The bbc
The seasons
Gardening

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 09/01/2020 20:19

Looser Liberal society, so much more relaxed on so many issues...

Sense of humours, beautiful country side, cosy... London is amazing.

North West, gorgeous too, north Wales, lakes... And Chester, Liverpool etc.
Better school system we do have the 11+ in areas but Germany system isn't consistent and its Pretty much 11+ from the much younger syphon ING dc off.

However I imagine plenty of annoyances you'll lament. Packed crowded busy roads, densely populated areas.... Awkward clumsy hospital system compared to Germany....

Beketaten · 09/01/2020 20:21

Great food from all over the world, history, world-class museums, galleries, theatre and sport. You can be who you want to be. The British sense of humour.

Not saying Germany doesn't have all this (apart from the last), don't know the country at all!

aroundtheworldyet · 09/01/2020 20:23

It’s just way nicer. I couldn’t live in Germany. I find it incredibly rigid. Very closed. Slightly stuck in its ways. And quite divided geographically. Though I really like the people. But being there is suffocating for me.
Very rule based.

But then I wouldn’t live in a part of the U.K. which was suffocating and divided. And north London is definitely not like that.

Number64 · 09/01/2020 20:24

I moved from Germany back to the UK! If you are moving to the northwest, mentally prepare yourself that it will feel a bit grimmer than Germany initially Grin But you have friendly chit chat everywhere you go - in shops, at bus stops, walking the dog, where ever. I’ve found a real sense of community where I am and lots to get involved with. There may also be other people moving back to the U.K. from abroad, especially if you’re moving to a city.

There is also beautiful countryside and history to explore in this part of the world (even if you’ve lived here for yonks) and you have the Peak District, Wales, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Moors and the Northwest coast right on your doorstep.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and the move :)

Marshymallowy · 09/01/2020 20:26

It's a relatively safe country
The humour
The scenery
Tea
Greggs

mousemousse · 09/01/2020 20:27

The weather, tea, accents, no guns, fish and chips, extra mature cheddar cheese, oak trees
