To ask what you like about living in the U.K.?

I'm pregnant, and we are moving back to the U.K. I'm nervous about it.

So, could you tell me some of the reasons you love living there to calm me down a bit?

A lot of the time, I read quite a lot of negative things, but I know the positives out way the negative!

Help! Grin

The National Parks, The National Trust, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Coastal Paths, public footpaths, The National Gallery, St Paul’s Cathedral, Kings College Chapel, bridges, museums, cathedrals, churches, theatres, country pubs, city bars, village shops, Tesco Express, private gardens which open for charity in the summer, funny whiteboard messages on the Underground.

Thanks everyone, you're all lovely for making me feel better tonight!
I'm happy we're going to London before moving back to the north west, just because we're currently in Berlin and I think it'll be less of a culture shock.
But I do love the humour, and it's actually a very beautiful - if a little strange sometimes - island.
I am excited for the food and for supermarkets.
But now I have a lot more to be excited about!

Berlin is fab though!!!

PhoneLock · 09/01/2020 20:30

The weather, tea, accents, no guns, fish and chips, extra mature cheddar cheese, oak trees

Apart from the oak trees, Australia has all that.

scaryteacher · 09/01/2020 20:32

The language (I no longer have to contend with Flemish or French)
the choice in the supermarkets; the range of supermarkets
the cheapness of broadband and telephones
clotted cream
lemon curd yoghurt
fresh milk (none of your nasty UHT)
fresh cream
the sense of humour and irony
bacon
shops being open on a Monday
smoked haddock
being allowed to do whatever I choose, unless it is strictly forbidden

Just being back, with the green, the Moors, the weather, the sea, Marks and Spencer, libraries, getting a cup of tea in a cafe, that is proper tea made with boiling water, not tepid water and a Liptons yellow label tea flavour bag, with UHT gunk to put in it.

Driving on the correct side of the road and no priority from the right.
Things make sense here in a way they never did in Belgium.

Sceptre86 · 09/01/2020 20:33

Relatively safe
Mostly friendly people
Nice weather, not usually at either extreme
Liberal
NHS
Free schooling
Amazing food from all over the world
Culturally diverse
Beautiful scenery
Renowned museums, art galleries, historical sites
Lots of activities for families ( although area dependent)

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:33

Berlin is fab to visit, and lovely to live in for the first few months, but I'm over it now I think 😅

All that different food! Amazing food!!

Seashells47 · 09/01/2020 20:35

YORKSHIRE - Gods own country

User67836 · 09/01/2020 20:37

I live in north London, I love the cafes, the mix of different cultures and therefore all the yummy food. There is a lots going on for families, and really easy to get into central London. I would say join the local Facebook group to find out what’s going on locally.

rainylake · 09/01/2020 20:38

Olay, I used to live in Berlin, and though I loved it and would have stayed in a heartbeat if I could have, here are some of the things that are better about here:

Food. Germany just isn't a food culture in my experience.
Cleanliness of the cities. Constantly walking through dog shit and broken beer bottles really pissed me off about Berlin.
Stuff being open on a Sunday
Coffee. Okay there are hipster coffee bars in Berlin but the average standard of coffee is atrocious
Being able to get a glass of tap water in a restaurant with your meal without either having to pay or have a fight about it.
Spicy food

CopperAndGold · 09/01/2020 20:41

Sarcasm.

SynchroSwimmer · 09/01/2020 20:44

You can wash your car - on the street in uk
...and cut your grass on a saturday afternoon - if you want
You don’t have to have winter tyres

Quality and range of food

Feeling “safe”

Administration and organisation easier in uk

HopeItComesWithBatteries · 09/01/2020 20:46

Mein Ehemann ist Deutscher.

Wir wohnen in England seit dreizig Jahren, weil wir das damals wollten. Wir haben unsere Entscheidung nie bedauert.

Viel Glueck. 😊

aroundtheworldyet · 09/01/2020 20:46

Can you not wash your car on the street!!??
Or cut your grass?

Callthemidwifeplease · 09/01/2020 20:46

The landscape
Great radio
Arts and culture

Ah you live in Berlin! The cosiness and genuine community in the northwest will be a nice contrast I reckon. The wholesomeness and down-to-earth banter. The utter dearth of wanky convo. Never having to talk about gentrification ever again ☺️Grin

Minky35 · 09/01/2020 20:50

Hi op, I live in the north west, I like:
Proximity to Manchester, Liverpool and Chester city centres.
Proximity to lovely countryside, both locally and the lakes etc.
Access to great restaurants
Theatres and great sports teams like football, rugby
Fabulous culture and rich history
Relatively low house prices
Best wishes with the move!

BonnyConnie · 09/01/2020 20:50

Rarely gets hot
Easy to get around
Nice clothes shops
Private schools, while very expensive, are good
People are fairly polite and friendly
British accents are nice (I especially love the degree of variation)
Lots of beautiful old houses

ooooohbetty · 09/01/2020 20:51

If you're moving to the north strangers will talk to you. Weather is annoying but it's always interesting. British humour is the best. The BBC is excellent. You're never too far from the seaside.

JustACog · 09/01/2020 20:53

When you live somewhere shit it makes holidays great.

Imagine having the misfortune of living somewhere great, it would be tough going on holiday and paying for the privilege of visiting somewhere comparatively crapper

glabicki · 09/01/2020 20:54

I could have written what rainylake wrote Grin

Lush rolling green hills, fab restaurants and entertainment in London. Free healthcare and dentistry for kids, excellent universities, more varieties of cheese than any other country (yes more than France actually)

@midnight the UK is tiny... Germany is much larger
