2 strollers per bus

GingerBeverage · 09/01/2020 11:09

How many times have you been told you can't get on a bus because there are already 2 strollers on board?
I'd have thought that any analysis of London bus users would highlight that people with strollers are some of the biggest users of the service.
Would it be SO terrible to have a little more space for us, and for wheelchair users?

I had 2 a year apart. When I travelled by public transport I went on the expectation that I wouldn't be able to wheel the buggy on. Never had a double though. That way, when I did manage to do that, it felt like a gift. It's about managing expectations really. When I was a baby, my parents didn't drive and there was no access to take prams etc on board. They therefore walked miles if they needed to. Often with toddlers and primary age dc in tow as well. We've all gotten soft, I include myself in this now too.

my2bundles · 09/01/2020 13:05

They need to get rid of the buggy spaces and put the large luggage racks back into the soaces, you could fit at least 10 folded buggy spaces in them Wheelchair spaces should be reserved for the people who fought for them, the wheelchair users. Fold buggy before boarding and store in the rack, it worked for generations before this one and will work again. No one would have to miss or bus or leave mid journey due to a wheelchair user.

Greggers2017 · 09/01/2020 13:06

You can get pushchairs you can fold one handed. Most strollers do, the babyjogger I had did. If you need to use public transport regularly buy this kind of pushchair.
I find the main problem is that there isn't sufficient storage for a pushchair on a bus. They need bigger luggage storage.

Greggers2017 · 09/01/2020 13:07

@my2bundles I remember the buses when I was young having steps onto them. We used to get the bus with my mums every week. She had 7 under 10 and always managed. We used to think it was great getting on and going up to the top deck.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/01/2020 13:10

We've all gotten soft, I include myself in this now too. call me a snowflake but I'm not walking 3 1/2 hours / 10 miles with a 4 yo and newborn twins. I will make sure we leave early enough to get there on time given I might not get on / have to get off

SleepingStandingUp · 09/01/2020 13:12

Fold buggy before boarding and store in the rack, it worked for generations before this one and will work again so did scrubbing your washing by hand and no electricity. Perhaps we should regress I mall areas as it was so much better before the snowflakes needed electricity, technology and understanding that not everyone fidns it easy to collapse their pram /buggy with multiple kids, kids with different needs, shopping, physical limitations etc.

my2bundles · 09/01/2020 13:12

It's true greggers everyone managed back then. 7 wow hats off to your mum 😊my mum had 4 very close in age and always managed us all plus folded buggy and bags.

my2bundles · 09/01/2020 13:15

Sleeping but we have regressed . You used ti be able to get 10 often more folded buggy spaces on a bus plus no one ever had to get off mid journey Nowadays its 2 buggy only or get off or wait for another bus. That's not progression.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/01/2020 13:17

Also, will get flamed but I've never been asked to get off for a WC user
I've was never asked either but have done it automatically if my pram didn't fold.

HomeMadeMadness · 09/01/2020 13:20

Alot of this also depends. I know people who take a 3 year old who can easily stand while a buggy is folded (or just walk the entire journey) take a 2 mile trip on a bus and moan bitterly when she has to wait 10 minutes for the next bus....cry me a river or just buy a more convenient buggy like people used to do. I have much more sympathy for people who need to take long journeys on irregular buses and have twin newborns or some other reason which makes folding more difficult.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/01/2020 13:21

@my2bundles There is a space for folded buggies. The problem is many don't want to take their baby out to fold the pram.
I always put my SN buggy where the luggage goes. It is usually empty.

Eveting2019 · 09/01/2020 13:26

You can’t hold a baby and fold a buggy. The child needs to be able to stand independently so you can do it. Surely?

ChanklyBore · 09/01/2020 13:28

Where I live, the last buses with stairs to access them were only phased out about five years ago. The majority of small routes still had them when my children were babies and toddlers, and they are only primary age now.

I have literally never taken a pushchair or wheelchair on a bus despite not having a car and being a public transport user.

Funnily enough, I’m not in London.

DinaCaliente · 09/01/2020 13:28

@SleepingStandingUp oh give over, we were still collapsing buggies before boarding the bus in the late 90's early 2000's when I had mine.
Having dedicated buggy spaces is a relatively new thing.

PersephoneandHades · 09/01/2020 13:29

@shas19 I can't believe people like you actually exist. Who do you think you are? It is a wheelchair priority space, move yourself you selfish moron.

Kazzyhoward · 09/01/2020 13:32

Some prams can’t be easily folded.

Surely that's something you consider when you buy it. Why would you buy a pram that you can't easily fold when you know you're going to need to fold it to get on public transport or put it in your car boot?

HomeMadeMadness · 09/01/2020 13:33

I could do mine one handed. My friend also used a carrier and folded her buggy. It might be tricky with twins though - I haven't tried that one!

MelroseHigginbottom · 09/01/2020 13:37

I wonder what people think mothers who have double buggies are supposed to do. I'll have a 1.3yo and a newborn soon so will need a double buggy. If I had to use a bus I would certainly not be able to wrangle my two very different size babies out of the buggy to fold it even if the queen of England were asking me to.

my2bundles · 09/01/2020 13:39

I've held a baby, folded a buggy and kept control of an older child plus held bags many times pre boarding. 😂 I can assure you it can be done.

OddBoots · 09/01/2020 13:39

Buses here have more grandparents (usually grandmother's) with buggies than parents with buggies. They would struggle even more to fold them down.

my2bundles · 09/01/2020 13:39

Melrose you ask for help.

MelroseHigginbottom · 09/01/2020 13:41

My2bundles - suppose nobody wants to help?

Camomila · 09/01/2020 13:42

Eveting2019 when I had to fold my pushchair to put it through the airport scanner I handed my baby to the security person. When I tried to fold my pushchair and hold my toddler on the bus to let someone with a wheelchair get on, someone offered to hold him (in London)

doritosdip · 09/01/2020 13:43

I think that buggy spaces on buses are the new parent and child car spaces. Looks like it might be easier if bus companies went back to the rule of buggies being folded on buses unless baby is disabled eg there's an oxygen tank or a double buggy is involved.

my2bundles · 09/01/2020 13:44

In the entire time I boarded buses pre buggy spaces that never happened once. No one ever refused in my mother's generation either. I'm sure posters conveniently forget that us oldies have been there, done that and got the tshirt
