How much do you tip a hair stylist!

As above. Posting here for traffic. Do you tip a hair stylist?

I have no about salon etiquette. Growing up I never went to the salon. My mother had her hair dresser friend come over to the house to do all our hair. I’ve only been to the salon a few times as I’m really nervous about. I have tipped before. For instance if a hair cut is £45. I’ll give them £50. £5 as a tip. Enough?

Limited budget here at the minute too.

I just have no idea 🤭

I don’t think it really matters. I tip £10 on a £100 cut and colour. So I think you are about right. Don’t feel bad though if you can’t afford to tip. Smile

CooCooCoo · 09/01/2020 09:45

I tip the assistant as a priority , if there’s one. They get paid the poorest. Otherwise it’s the stylist.

Never tip the owner.

I used to work in a salon

CooCooCoo · 09/01/2020 09:45

And £5 is very much enough!

Pop2017 · 09/01/2020 09:52

Thank you. I am still new to this!

When my son gets a hair cut. It’s £8 (he’s 8). I give the stylist a £10 note and tell him to keep the change. Is that ok? Or shall I give a tip as change. He works alone in a very small salon so there’s no tips to share around..

I tip if I have cash, which is rarely (there's no cash machine near the salon). I go to the same stylist every 6-8 weeks though, so figure my loyalty makes up for not always tipping. And then, when I do tip, I often bump it up a bit. If I only have a couple of quid in change, I always tip the assistant anyway. One of ours is fabulous at hair washing!

SugarButterFlour · 09/01/2020 09:57

I round it up to the nearest fiver for kids' haircuts.

Picklypickles · 09/01/2020 09:58

I don't tip anything, I can very rarely afford a hair cut as it is and my hairdresser certainly doesn't seem to be struggling financially driving around in her convertible mercedes in her designer clothes!

Aderyn19 · 09/01/2020 10:00

I tip £5. That's whether I've had a £40 haircut or £100 colour and cut.

speakout · 09/01/2020 10:01

My cut costs £20. I tip £5 to the stylist.

Sweetdreamer93 · 09/01/2020 10:01

I find it interesting that people think the owners are the well off ones.
Often for the first few years they are the ones working the longest hours on the least pay whilst providing jobs.

The stylist has been to college and earned their qualifications. Their skills are what give you the style you want but let’s tip the hair washer.

I’m sorry but this is typical of people not seeing things as they really are.

totallyradllama · 09/01/2020 10:03

Aargh I hate this dilemma. Same with beauty therapists.
Sorry OP I can't answer your Q

You are paying for a service so why do you have to tip service on top? It doesn't make sense to me. But they always hover by the till. If you don't tip its awks but recently I've found if you do they seem surprised and say "if are you sure?". It's awful.

Plus if you get a cut and colour here's awkward tip-splitting and if you pay by card you have to remember to take two fivers.

It would help if people said region when posting as I think it does vary..

So I'm in a city in SE not London

Louiselouie0890 · 09/01/2020 10:04

If the trainee if that's what they're called washes my hair and gives the little massage then I will give them a tip. If the hairdresser gives me tips on styling or care or says what looks good etc then I'll give them a tip.

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 10:06

Yes I tip and in the hairdressers I use then when then you are finished and your paying at reception then the stylist will come to the reception with you and you almost feel like you have to tip them, this may make me sound like a tight arss but my hair costs just under £200 every few months and so it’s expensive enough without tipping but I do!

I will pay the actual stylist maybe a 15% tip and I always give the girl that washed my hair etc, £10.

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 10:08

I’m in Edinburgh and I use Cheynes hairdressers which is exclusive to Edinburgh only and in the same league with regards to pricing as Toni & Guy, Uber trendy.

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 10:09

To the OP giving the barber/stylist the £2 change off of a £10 for an £8 haircut is perfect.

Baileys4two · 09/01/2020 10:12

I don't tip anymore.

Haircuts are expensive enough.

The guy I use runs his salon from a purpose built place in his garden. He works alone, and the first few times I used him, he was really surprised, and I think, he felt really awkward that I'd tipped him.

I do give him a gift I know he'll love at Christmas, and on his birthday though.

I also go there with my 2 dc every 6-8 weeks, so he does pretty well out of the 3 of us, I think.

Baileys4two · 09/01/2020 10:13

I'm in the SE

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 10:14

Cheynes don’t pay their staff well at all as I know a girl that works there, infact it’s not much more than minimum wage and I’m unsure how much they get per client but it’s not much at all and it’s greedy AF of the employer considering she has a few salons in Edinburgh and the prices they charge are ridiculous but they’re brilliant stylists and they dress like they earn a fortune but they don’t, so many greedy employers out there.

cookiemonster5 · 09/01/2020 10:17

I've never tipped. All hairdresser/barbers I use are self employed so set their own prices.

Gottobefree · 09/01/2020 10:19

I've never tipped. Hard enough affording the London prices as it is !

misspiggy19 · 09/01/2020 10:21

I have never tipped. I pay enough for a haircut as it is.

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 10:22

I don’t think the Edinburgh prices are that different to that of London’s in all honesty.

Emmacb82 · 09/01/2020 10:52

I used to tip £5 but my hair got far too expensive in the end so the last time when I was paying out over £120 I didn’t tip. I did feel a bit bad but I do think sometimes tipping has gone way over the top in this country. Why can’t people just do their jobs and not expect anything in return! Might sound harsh but I’m a nurse and don’t get a tip for saving lives! I can no longer afford to have my hair done as it’s too expensive but I would think twice about tipping now as the costs have just exploded.

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 10:54

I think Employers paying their staff shit wages is why their workers deserve a tip.

JeezyPeeps · 09/01/2020 10:58

Crikey! I paid a tenner for my last haircut and tipped £2.

No way would I pay some of these prices.
