How much do you tip a hair stylist!

As above. Posting here for traffic. Do you tip a hair stylist?

I have no about salon etiquette. Growing up I never went to the salon. My mother had her hair dresser friend come over to the house to do all our hair. I’ve only been to the salon a few times as I’m really nervous about. I have tipped before. For instance if a hair cut is £45. I’ll give them £50. £5 as a tip. Enough?

Limited budget here at the minute too.

I just have no idea 🤭

Yeah paying £2 for a £10 haircut is perfect I think.

EpcotForever · 09/01/2020 11:07

I worked in a salon for years as a receptionist. Hairdressers often get £1/£2/£5 from various clients. They appreciate any money, but you are definitely remembered if you leave anything more than £5.
99% of the time they use tips to pay for lunches.
One lady often used to keep her £2 and the £1 left for the junior. Really annoyed me!

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 11:10

Yeah it’s like anything in that the bigger tippers are always rewarded.

Bluesheep8 · 09/01/2020 11:12

I pay the price of my haircut. I get paid for doing my job.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 09/01/2020 11:13

I don’t tip anyone as where do you stop?
Lots of of jobs are low paid with a lot more responsibility than a hair dresser yet no one offers them a tip so why is someone cutting or washing your hair different?

RhymingRabbit3 · 09/01/2020 11:14

I just pay the advertised price. I never even thought of tipping. In a restaurant you pay for the food, and service is extra. In the hairdresser you pay for the service in the first place, so what would the extra be for?

Pipandmum · 09/01/2020 11:15

Yes the convention seems to be 10% to hairdresser (or round up as you have done) and a couple quid to the girl who washes it if different.
And yes I would round up the £8 to £10 for your sons cut.

BrightonBB · 09/01/2020 11:17

I don’t tip. I used to feel guilty but not any more. Prices are so high now.

AgeLikeWine · 09/01/2020 11:18

£0.

Tipping is outdated, discriminatory, feudal and demeaning.

Hairdressers operate in a free market in which they can price their services at what they consider to be a commercially appropriate level, so why on earth would I want to pay more?

Shinedown · 09/01/2020 11:21

Nothing! My last colour and cut cost £150.

Comefromaway · 09/01/2020 11:23

I've never tipped a hairdresser in my life. I generally pay around £30-35.

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 11:27

Not all hairdressers charge what they like, in mine then it’s set by the salon, the executive stylist (this is what they’re called) cut price is about £120 and the stylist doesn’t even get £50 of that to herself according to the girl I know that works there.

She told me that in one day with homers then she can pretty much make what she makes in a week at the salon and that the salon don’t like their stylists doing homers but she doesn’t take their clients away from them, she knows them through her own means and of course she would rather get the cash for herself than give more to the already overpriced salon.

JosefKeller · 09/01/2020 11:33

If I am really happy with cut and colour, I tend to give £10.
If I am not, I give nothing.

JosefKeller · 09/01/2020 11:35

the "overpriced" salon still needs someone to pay rent, utilities, insurance, and brings clients.

She told me that in one day with homers then she can pretty much make what she makes in a week at the salon
If it was that easy and well paid, why does she bother with the salon at all?

milliefiori · 09/01/2020 11:35

I've stopped tipping. I'm sick of paying £80 for a basic cut and blow dry which is quite good but not amazing, and then feeling I have to cough up another tenner on top. If it's £80 (no colour, just cut and blow dry), I can assume the stylist is getting a reasonable cut of that for her work. She won't be on minimum wage, will she (please correct me if I'm wrong. I'll go back to tipping if so.)

Inappropriatefemale · 09/01/2020 11:36

JosefKeller she doesn’t have enough clients to sustain just working for herself.

hellsbellsmelons · 09/01/2020 11:38

I don't tip every time.
I usually give a certain amount at Christmas and that's it!
I spend a lot of money at my hairdressers annually!
So no, they don't get anything until Christmas time.

Keepmewarm · 09/01/2020 11:38

Usually £5. Although if it came to say £32, I would pay £40. I usually round it up.
My hairdresser/beauty therapist have a jar for their Christmas night out/dinner and all tips go in that so are shared between the staff.

Clevs · 09/01/2020 11:38

I don't tip each haircut but put £10 in a card at Christmas.

Merinocool · 09/01/2020 11:40

I have a different person who does the cut and colour and I give them £5 each.

Merinocool · 09/01/2020 11:41

I should add my husband and son go every 3 weeks and don’t tip but give 50 in a card at Christmas.

SallyWD · 09/01/2020 11:41

My cut costs £50 and I tip the hairdresser a fiver. I give the woman who washes my hair £3.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/01/2020 11:43

I don't tip because it's £49 for a cut and if I have a colour it's £100. At Xmas I put £30 in a Xmas card for my stylist as she does a good job and I like her.

CooCooCoo · 09/01/2020 15:49

as a 16 yo assistant I lived on £50-£70 a week. I was on an apprenticeship.

I had a council flat, paid by benefits, it was murder, but I worked my arse off to get out of it.

Anytime I got a tip was precious.

Wattagoose90 · 09/01/2020 16:02

I hate tipping. So American. But I use the same hairstylist religiously and I want her to do a good job the next time, so I tip a fiver.
