To ask what I'm meant to wear to get married?

I couldn't find the right category and this has the most traffic but...

I'm getting married in February, just me, DP and 2 witnesses.
Obviously I don't get a proper wedding dress, but what kind of thing do I wear, just a nice white casual dress? Jeans and a top? I'm just not sure?
Then theres what DP wears, just a shirt and nice trousers?
Or is it really just that deep and we wear our normal stuff?

Genuinely, whatever you want!

If you're happy wearing normal everyday clothes, that's great. If you want the excuse to buy a new outfit, do that. If you feel that you want to mark it by wearing something special, do that. But there aren't any rules for the sort of ceremony you're planning. The officiant will have seen everything and won't mind either way.

bridgetreilly · 07/01/2020 19:50

Oh, and it certainly doesn't have to be white, even if you do decide to dress up a bit. It can be, if you want, but it doesn't have to be.

Ponoka7 · 07/01/2020 19:51

I dress up for occasions, this is an occasion, so it would be something dressy.

It's too individual to suggest something. I've been to weddings and been surprised at how casual some of the guests look.

MelroseHigginbottom · 07/01/2020 19:52

We only had both sets of parents as witnesses. Dh wore a suit he already owned and I wore a bridesmaid dress that I found on a huge bargain sale that was light yellow and a white cardi/bolero.

thescarftwins · 07/01/2020 19:52

We did the same. I treated myself to a gorgeous black and white dress that was quite 50s style with long sleeves. Haven't worn it since but felt amazing and loved wearing it. We wore our outfits out to dinner that evening too and just looked like we'd dressed up for a nice dinner. No one knew we'd been married.

Congratulations! Wear whatever makes you happy.

JoJoSM2 · 07/01/2020 19:54

It’d be a very special occasion to me so it’d be a cream knee length dress and a little wool jacket. My hair, make up and nails would be done. I’d expect the groom to wear a suit.
Jeans sound like a bit of a farce.

TabbyMumz · 07/01/2020 19:56

Where are you getting married? And why do you think you cant get the white dress? I got married in a registry office and wore the white dress. I also know people who got married on their own abroad and wore the white dress.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/01/2020 19:56

There's a lot of sales still going on so ideal time for a browse. It's a very personal thing but I wore a dress with a matching bolero jacket. I felt good & it was comfortable. Congratulations & hope you have a lovely day!

MaggieFS · 07/01/2020 19:57

Whatever you like! Do you have any ideas in your mind's eye of what you imagine your wedding photos to look like? What are you wearing?

schoolcats · 07/01/2020 19:59

As long as you don't wear the emperor's new clothes you will be fine, just wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in and that you will be happy with when you see the photos.

Crocwearer · 07/01/2020 19:59

Whatever makes you happy! Dh and I got married with just two witnesses, we did very casual, jeans and trainers.
Congratulations Wine

Sexnotgender · 07/01/2020 20:00

Wear whatever you like!

I’d choose a beautiful timeless dress in whatever colour suits you, be it red or black or whatever.

luckymagnoliatree · 07/01/2020 20:00

It can be a wedding dress... if you want it to be! We went abroad to get married (just me and hubby, no guests), I wore a wedding dress and he wore a linen suitSmile we chose to have a party a few months after to celebrate with family and friends and I wore my dress & got my hair etc done a second time.

You don't have to spend a lot on a wedding dress, you can get amazing preloved and ex-display bargains. Or if you don't want to wear a wedding dress you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in! Smile hope you have an amazing day!

An0nym0us2011 · 07/01/2020 20:02

Iv seen a few nice casual white dresses on asos but just don't want to look like iv over done it 😂 it's just at the registry office

Whatever you like, smart or casual. I’d definitely go for something dressy, but perhaps not full length. Maybe book an appointment with a personal shopper at somewhere like John Lewis and see what ideas they have that would suit you. If you hate dressing up, jeans is fine.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 07/01/2020 20:03

I don’t think you can overdo it, it’s your wedding day! Why not post some ASOS links?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 07/01/2020 20:03

I suppose my only restriction is that you and DH should broadly match. You’d look silly if you were very different levels of dressy.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 07/01/2020 20:05

I wore a nice dress that I'd worn to someone elses wedding. Just wear whatever you fancy, they will have people in jeans and t shirt up to full on bridal

Elouera · 07/01/2020 20:06

No reason you couldn't have a 'proper' wedding dress! Is it a 2nd marriage? It might be the only time you will ever wear a 'proper' wedding dress. Is it at a registry office or somewhere else? Its a personal thing and something you will have photos of forever more.

I'd certainly wear at least a formal/cocktail dress and him in a suit, but its what you feel comfortable in. Debenhams and several other shops have a sales on now and also have a range of both long and short white, formal dresses. If you did get a white/cream dress, you could always dye it after wards.

nevermorelenore · 07/01/2020 20:06

I'd go for a 50s style dress. Lindy Bop have a sale on! Don't worry, you won't look overdressed. I used to work near a registry office and use to love seeing the brides outfits. They ranged from massive meringues to jeans and trainers. The most common look was fairly simple wedding dresses. Good luck!

Babdoc · 07/01/2020 20:08

OP, you’re overthinking it. People get married in all kinds of things. I had one colleague who got married in full scuba gear in a lake!
I just wore an old black dress from a chain store for my wedding. Like you, it was just us and two witnesses, and I hated any fuss. I went back to work the next morning.
Honestly, you can wear anything from a full meringue to torn jeans. The registrar isn’t going to throw you out for being over or under dressed! Go with whatever you want.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 20:18

You could wear what you’d normally wear as a guest to a wedding, but could go with the ‘would this offend the bride?’ look?

Ironmanrocks · 07/01/2020 20:20

I wore a bridesmaids dress from ASOS - bought at this time of year in the sale for £50 - it was simple and pretty. They have TONS of choice.
xx

Apolloanddaphne · 07/01/2020 20:20

Wear whatever makes you happy and feel great.

ChocolateCoins19 · 07/01/2020 20:21
