Tattoo cost

Sorry I have no idea where to put this!
I'm in Yorkshire, I want to get a tattoo, it's my first and only one and I've been designing it for years!
I'm very excited about it but have no idea about cost,
Anyone know roughly how much? Thanks!!!

Tattoo will be on my ankle about halfway up my calf and have some colour.
Fairly detailed design.

You'll have to go in to some places and ask. I'm quite tattooed but prices change over time, with experienced or new artists, colours, things that are fiddly etc. They will have a base price for time taken. My last one ended up costing me only my £40 deposit as it's not complicated or that big.

Frariedeamin · 06/01/2020 14:40

Probably £200-500 depending on the studio in my area.

Frariedeamin · 06/01/2020 14:41

I would also be prepared that your design may need to be altered. Smaller intricate pieces of work don’t always translate well into the skin that moves and stretches!

Cryingoverspilttea · 06/01/2020 14:42

If they're a good artist I'd expect £280 minimum if it's up the side of your calve. Anyone who charges less I'd be worried about.

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 06/01/2020 14:43

There’s a tattoo board on here if that also helps Smile

zoobincan · 06/01/2020 14:44

Well it very much depends on the design.

Maybe go and talk it over with some places?

BearSoFair · 06/01/2020 14:49

I have a 7-8 inch tattoo on the side of my leg, starting above my ankle. Mostly blue but it does have other colours, it cost me £250. I was very surprised it was only that much, especially considering it was done a well known, established studio. I was expecting £300 or thereabouts. And yes, be prepared that you might have to alter the design or sizing, I originally asked for mine to be around 6 inches but the artist advised to go slightly bigger to be able to include better detail.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 06/01/2020 14:57

Depends where you go, mine have all cost between £40 and £800. Studios charge by the hour or by the day here.
Best thing to do is to is to visit a couple of studios and get some quotes as pps have said.

Can be £80 per hour in my area. Depends on size and detail

dementedpixie · 06/01/2020 15:00

Check out local tattoo places. They will often be on Instagram/fb so you can see the work they do

Ponoka7 · 06/01/2020 15:04

My DD had an Intricate design done on her outer thigh. It was a two and a half day sitting, including the drawing up of it.

My DD recently took her own design in for a above ankle piece and that was £120 in black and white.

It was £200 a day. So £500 in total. Although you have your own design, it has to be drawn and altered how the artist thinks fit.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/01/2020 15:04

£70 per hour where I had mine done.

Ponoka7 · 06/01/2020 15:06

The big piece was £500, but that was a couple of years ago.

As said, don't go on cost. Look at the stuff of the different artists. My DD found her artist by going to a tattoo convention.

ChocChipWookie · 06/01/2020 15:06

A good tattoo isnt cheap, and a cheap tattoo isnt good

This.
Word of mouth and reputation are everything, and don't just look locally. A good tattooist is worth travelling the country for.

FooFighter99 · 06/01/2020 15:09

Mine charges £50 per hour, but it varies wildly from studio to studio

Do some research in your area (but don't rule out travelling a fair way for a decent artist, a friend of mine travelled a good 2 hours but she ended up with an amazing piece!!) and have a look at different artists' portfolios, also have a look on facebook and instagram and find an artist with a style you like and who has a decent following/customer base.

Don't rush into anything, as the ink will be with you for life!

CynthiaRothrock · 06/01/2020 15:09

Depends some places charge by size of design so maybe £40 others charge by the hour starting at £60 pH. Others will charge half day rate from 150/200 full day rate can be 250-600. Depends on the artist.

ClientListQueen · 06/01/2020 15:11

I paid £300 for a 5hr sitting (reduced rate as it counted as a full day) but she is usually £75ph

TheReef · 06/01/2020 15:11

You get what you pay for in my experience. The tattooist my dh uses has a 9 month waiting list, but his work is outstanding

DragonMamma · 06/01/2020 15:14

My most recent tattoo was on a £450 day rate.

I’d avoid anybody that I thought was a ‘good deal’ or that you could get to see quickly (unless they advertise for a same day appt after a cancellation but you know they are usually booked up). I had to wait 7 months for my appointment to cover up a £40 tattoo that I walked in and got 17/18 years ago Blush cost me £350 or thereabouts.

DragonMamma · 06/01/2020 15:16

Oh and you need to find a decent artist that actually likes doing the type of work you want. There’s no point going to a dot work artist if you want an homage to Homer Simpson (not recommended under any circumstances)

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 06/01/2020 15:27

My sons sleeve was somewhere south of £1200. Two days full sittings and a half day for finishing detail. It would have been more if the senior tattooist had done the work. His tattooist charges between £500 and £600 for a days work. That would be under the gun from 11 to 5 with short loo breaks. The owner of the shop charges about £800 and a junior apprentice about £250.
I have some work by the apprentice and it is nice work but it did take longer to do than similar pieces by more experienced artists.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 06/01/2020 15:29

I was talking to my DB about this over Christmas - he has quite a few.

It depends on what you want. He said each one of his cost between £500-800. He goes to a very good artist and yes they are more expensive however the look much better than the majority of tattoos I've seen.

I'd be wary about getting a really cheap one. Like PP's have said - word of mouth is important.

Fairylea · 06/01/2020 15:32

About £70-80 an hour is standard for a decent tattoo artist.

Look up their work on Instagram and research the studios really well.

Soontobe60 · 06/01/2020 15:34

There’s a tattoo board on here if that also helps

Whaaat! Shoots off to find the board....
