Sorry I have no idea where to put this!
I'm in Yorkshire, I want to get a tattoo, it's my first and only one and I've been designing it for years!
I'm very excited about it but have no idea about cost,
Anyone know roughly how much? Thanks!!!

Tattoo will be on my ankle about halfway up my calf and have some colour.
Fairly detailed design.

I have a total of 4 tattoos, the ones on my left are by a local person that now I can see did an ok job, and charged something like £60 and hour about 4 years ago, the other arm was by a more sought after tattooist and cost me almost double the hourly rate BUT you can the difference and is much more intricate etc, excellent shading.

As others have said you get what you pay for and research the hell outa it.. if they have a nice long list it’s ususly because they are good

Ask friends who have ink that you like where they had their's done - then go in and speak to them - and listen, they may advise you certain needs to be changed to meet the way your skin goes etc. And also ask who they would recommend do it (especially if several work out of the same studio)

My husband had one at 18/19 which he regretted and his others had been done by the same guy (not the one who did the first), for his 40th I decided to get him a cover up, when he spoke to his normal tattooist he said he could do it, but he'd recommend his colleague as that type of work he's better at

Also never go to someone where you can just walk in

The best thing to do is shop around for artists until you find one that you really like who does the art style you want for your tattoo. Check out their reviews and reputation and make sure the studio is clean and friendly. From there you can work with the artist and they will price up your tattoo by size, detail, etc. Normally it will go on the time involved. I recently paid for a tattoo on my calf all in colour that took half a day and it cost around £250 at a discounted rate (because the artist wanted to tattoo the subject matter).

I'm also in Yorkshire and go to one specific woman who has now done 3 pieces of work for me, 1 flash, 1 completely custom and 1 was inspired by a piece of her flash, but made custom.
My most recent one is on my calf, full colour, about the size of my whole hand. cost £110, it was a bit less than two hours work. She charges about £65 per hour, but she works astonishingly quick so it works out very reasonable.
I think £70 per hour is about the going rate, but it depends on what they get done in that hour!

I have quite a few tattoos including a sleeve and chest piece. I ususally pay between £60 and £80 an hour where I am. Many places will do a full day sitting cheaper, so say £300 for 5hrs - but after 3 hours my body can't take anymore! Have a look around their pages, pop into their shops and get a feel for the artist before you decide who to go with.

I recently had a small one with some colour. It was £100 with £30 deposit. My friend has more complex larger ones and they were £130 so i suppose there may be a mimimum charge to make it worth their while?

MulticolourMophead · 08/01/2020 12:55

I'm getting a cover up started in Feb, she charges £80 per hour. I'm getting it done in 2hr sittings, might need 5/6 hours total, but 2 hrs is enough for me.

I went in and had a long chat about what I was looking for, and she's putting this together in a custom design.

My last tattoo was designed by me, tweaked by the tattooist to make it look better, which it does. That chap was about £60 per hour a few years ago. I love the result, but felt slightly uncomfortable in that studio, so looked around when I want this latest one done.

It's worth asking around for recommendations, checking out the studio and how it feels.

People have different pain tolerances. Personally for me it's never been more than a bit uncomfortable..

Yeah I agree, it's usually £20-40 minimum where I am.

IAmLEA · 08/01/2020 17:00

Thanks everyone for your advice!
@CharlotteMD I've had kids, the pain can't compare to Labour, lol. 😄
