To not want to take my Christmas tree down?

It’s been on to-do list all day and I’ve been avoiding it. Working late tomorrow hence it ‘having’ to come down today to hit the deadline of the 6th, or demons will get me (or something?)

But it’s so nice and twinkly and cheerful! And it’s so grey and dark and sad everywhere still! I don’t want it to be January and grey and cold and stark and all the cosy twinkliness gone

Yanbu- I hate taking ours down.

We have a half tree which sits v right against one wall, so takes up hardly any space but gives a lovely twinkly homely glow.

I do find it funny on social media that there’s definitely a link between the people who put their tree up on 1st November and those who are moaning about being sick of the sight of it on Boxing Day!

Rockbird · 05/01/2020 21:25

I'm always ready to take ours down but I do leave fairy lights up for most of January. We have lights on our hedge outside and I've turned off the coloured ones but will leave the white ones on their timer. I totally know what you mean about it being miserable even though I'm a winter person.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 05/01/2020 21:27

Could you put fairy lights around picture frames or somewhere to keep the twinkles?
The glow they give off is as homely as a candle without the danger of forgetting to blow it out.

PinkiOcelot · 05/01/2020 21:29

Ahhh it’s pretty miserable taking it down (from what I remember, haven’t put one up for a few years now) but you’ll get used to it pretty much straight away when it’s gone.

This is what we’ve done. Doesn’t look the classiest, but it cheers me up on a cold January evening to flick the fairy lights on!

Choice4567 · 05/01/2020 21:31

I've still got fairy lights up. And I'm off to Homebase tomorrow to buy a large indoor plant because I'm not coping without the greenery!

MsVestibule · 05/01/2020 21:31

Our tree is so big that we have to move the sofa along so we can watch the TV! So I don't miss that bit. But I love the tree itself; it's just so comforting and pretty.

Pipandmum · 05/01/2020 21:32

No I'm feeling I should have done it already. Sure it looks beautiful still but it's over (I just put daffodils on the table and now it just looks odd).

mizu · 05/01/2020 21:32

We took the tree down yesterday and have put the lights around the dresser StarStarStar

Drizzzle · 05/01/2020 21:33

Leave it up as long as you like :) The Queen doesn't take hers down until February.

AppleKatie · 05/01/2020 21:33

I was sad to say goodbye to mine yesterday. It lasted really well this year and still looked great. Had to be done though and I’m sort of glad for the extra space in the room.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 05/01/2020 21:34

I would have mine down on boxing day, but if you enjoy it leave it up!

CrispsForTea · 05/01/2020 21:34

If it helps, the Christmas season doesn't end in the Church until Candlemas which is 2nd February this year, so you can keep it up until then!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 05/01/2020 21:34

We have fairy lights inside our house named winter lights & they stay on all winter Grin

I’m delighted to have the space back with the tree gone tbh but if you like you tree up & you don’t have any concerns about the three witches Wink keep you tree for as long as you enjoy it

BonnyConnie · 05/01/2020 21:35

I feel the same. My (real) tree still looks so fresh it feels wasteful to throw it out.

Almostfifty · 05/01/2020 21:36

Love putting mine up, love taking it down. Because I have a real tree, it starts to look a bit weary by now, so it's good to get rid.

I do like the house being back to normal too.

Kbear · 05/01/2020 21:37

I have some fairy lights in the fireplace to cheer the place up during the long winter nights - I love them!

ElluesPichulobu · 05/01/2020 21:40

liturgically speaking it is still Christmas season in churches until Candlemas, 40 days after Christmas.

TeacupDrama · 05/01/2020 21:42

my mom has winterish flower arrangement red berries white silver flowers and leaves them out sometimes with the white lights and just puts the really christmassy stuff away
I've hurt my back so although taken baubles off tree it is still up as too sore to fold away ( its artificial have had it 10 years) maybe DD will help tomorrow after school

NorthernLightss · 05/01/2020 21:52

I feel the same, and when out walking I think it's lovely when the neighbours have their outdoor lights on. It felt dreary this weekend to be out walking and the lights gone.

I quote like the idea of having a door wreath year - round, I'm sure I could find a way to decorate it for each season.

Cwenthryth · 05/01/2020 22:04

Still wavering.... doggo is asleep on my lap so can’t really get up at the moment....

I read a story when I was little about someone who left one hidden decoration up after 6th Jan and some kind of evil pixies played lots of tricks on them until they did a ritual on Candlemas (2Feb) and banished them. It’s stayed with me.

I like that I could keep it till 6th Feb and claim to be honouring George 6th though (that’s why Queenie keeps hers up, until the anniversary of his death, I googled).

I feel the same! I think I'll compromise by taking the baubles down and leaving the fairy lights.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/01/2020 22:12

I am really sad ours is down - and I know I will feel sadder still when I see all the trees outside waiting for recycling on my way to work tomorrow!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 05/01/2020 22:24

I love it when the tree comes down because our house seems so big and tidy! We do have fairy lights though; mn would consider them to be tacky but we have berry lights, flower lights, beach hut lights etc and we rotate them every few months.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 05/01/2020 22:26

Oh and I'm not one of those people who put their Xmas decs up at the end of November either; our tree went up a week before and came down on new year's day.
