To ask how much you have in your pension?

I know its a really personal question but I'm just interested.

I've been banging onto my partner about how important it is to start putting into a pension but he doesn't seem to get it!

I'm early 20s and have near £4K in mine already. The thought of being older and having absolutely nothing or very little in my pension is terrifying.

I know it's going to be years and years before I retire but I still think it's so important.

What about you?

Early 30s and I think about £4000 too, I need to check. But I didn’t work properly until my late 20s so only started paying in then.

BuffaloCauliflower · 05/01/2020 16:54

Agree it’s very important

imwellardme · 05/01/2020 16:59

35 and I have 40k. Nowhere near enough! But should grow quickly now I'm finished having babies and looking for promotions at work.

lbyc · 05/01/2020 17:01

@imwellardme How much do you want to have out of interest? I'm not even sure how much I'll need!

OP posts:
desperatesux · 05/01/2020 17:01

mid 40's just under 900K

lbyc · 05/01/2020 17:03

@desperatesux Shock whats your monthly contribution?

OP posts:
KingaRoo · 05/01/2020 17:03

I have around 50k which will give me about £120 a month!!!!

Makes me feel like not bothering.

imwellardme · 05/01/2020 17:03

@ibyc I'd like to aim for 300k!

I was once told that if you're a homeowner you need 300-350k, but if you are going to have to pay rent for the rest of your life you need at least 450k.

beelzeboob · 05/01/2020 17:04

I’m 38 and have about 50k stashed.
I put 10k a year in (self employed)

You’ll get a mixed bag of answers here op. Though most important thing is that you’ve started so by the time you retire you should be fine. My sister has saved absolutely nothing and she sticks her head in the sand when I try and talk to her about it.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 05/01/2020 17:05

36 and 300k in mine, similar for DH

Whowaswronghere2 · 05/01/2020 17:06

I'm 43 and about 800 per month at present. It used to be a final salary pension, but they changed all that a few years back...

lbyc · 05/01/2020 17:06

My mum has also saved next to nothing and she's 54. She only has 13k in a private pension from years ago. As PP said, I think she definitely sticks her head in the sand when it comes to it

We have public service pensions so did not need a ‘pension pot’ as such. Our financial advisor told us that to achieve the pension DH receives, would require a pot of £1.5 million at least.
All those years of seeing our salaries reduced by contributions were well worth it.

lbyc · 05/01/2020 17:07

Im hoping to increase my contribution significantly as I progress further in years to come. I'm still only 22 so got a hell of a long time yet!

OP posts:
NotStayingIn · 05/01/2020 17:08

I have around £140k but given that I’m in my 40s that’s not that great really. Have recently really increased my contributions to try and improve things. I put in 18% of my salary and work put in another 10%. Will be interesting to see what percent of their income people are putting away each month.

titchy · 05/01/2020 17:12

Haven't got a clue. Got a final salary /career average scheme. Reckon I'll get £20k a year assuming I stay part time. Which I intend to Grin

Coughsyrupsucks · 05/01/2020 17:13

Late 40s and about 7k in various pensions. Been over paying the mortgage instead and that’s paid off soon. So then will start throwing everything at pensions. Still got another 20ish years of working, so it should turn out alright (hopefully!)

GallusAlice79 · 05/01/2020 17:14

I am 40 and have a career average defined benefit. I expect a pension of around £50k in today's money.

Definitely the biggest perk of being a civil servant!

FFSFFSFFS · 05/01/2020 17:16

I'm 43 and have about £350k. Have paid in about 15% since I started working. I haven't actually saved anywhere near £350k - pensions are such an efficient way to save!

FFSFFSFFS · 05/01/2020 17:17

ie - what I mean is the tax benefits and employer benefits mean that the money out of my pay hasn't totally anywhere near £350k....

MrsJ28903 · 05/01/2020 17:17

Teacher pension and I have no idea. I don’t think it’s a pot though. Just that I contribute for a promised proportion of my career average salary. I hope!
DH has next to nothing. whatever the compulsory NEST auto enrolment thing is.

AuntieMarys · 05/01/2020 17:18

£650k. I'm 60 and retired.

kinsss · 05/01/2020 17:19

Do public sector also qualify for the State Pension? Just wondered.

Brimful · 05/01/2020 17:20

No pension, DH & I invested in property instead.

PaperbackBlighter · 05/01/2020 17:21

Well done for starting early, @lbyc, and you’re right to encourage your boyfriend to get his finger out.

I wasn’t in a position to start as early as you, but I’m making up for it now. I pay 10% of my salary into my pension, and my employer pays 12% so it’s building up nicely.
