To ask how much you have in your pension?

I know its a really personal question but I'm just interested.

I've been banging onto my partner about how important it is to start putting into a pension but he doesn't seem to get it!

I'm early 20s and have near £4K in mine already. The thought of being older and having absolutely nothing or very little in my pension is terrifying.

I know it's going to be years and years before I retire but I still think it's so important.

What about you?

DH has around £600,000 in his pension pot.I’m already taking my public sector pension having taken early retirement last year.
We’ve got very healthy savings too so hopefully we’ll have a comfortable retirement. We’re also mortgage free.

booksandcaffeine · 05/01/2020 18:12

Late 20s and £795.

OublietteBravo · 05/01/2020 18:12

It’s complicated to answer the question because I have 3 pensions:
A. 1x final salary
B. 1x career average
C. 1x defined contribution

I’m currently 44, and I’ve built up a pension income of around £12k a year from A and B, and I have around £85k in pension C.

dun1urkin · 05/01/2020 18:14

Another one with a public sector defined benefits scheme, so no idea
I think I’ll have around £30k a year in today’s money.... only another 20 years to go Grin

Octopus37 · 05/01/2020 18:15

About 14k, which is terrifying, have only missed a few years though in NI contributions, which means that at least I will get some state pension. I had a long break (having kids), had a work situation change this year which meant I had to cancel it. We are about to move house so working my arse off paying for everything there, paid for Christmas, school trips etc and and and. Just don't know how you are supposed to do it all. Earn about 15k a year at the moment for working nearly full time self-employed. Look forward to a day when I can pay more in, but don't ever expect to retire completely. Thankfully, I have some savings (not loads about 7k) and will have no mortgage by then. Try and tell myself that there will always be a way.

JemimaPuddleCat · 05/01/2020 18:24

Am 36 and have zilch.

My NI contributions are up to date, so that's the best I can hope for.

Rhayader · 05/01/2020 18:25

Just turned 30 and I have 20k in a private pension and a public sector final salary pension that is worth £4,000 a year (cost of living adjusted so this will be whatever £4000 today is worth when I retire). This is worth 1/42 of my salary each year, so if I work for 42 years in the public sector I get my full salary as a pension.

DH (similar age) has about 100-150k I think. His current employer put 10% of his earnings into a pension on top of his salary.

FrazzledCareerWoman · 05/01/2020 18:26

About 140k. Mid 30s. Wish I had started earlier as now I earn over the taper threshold (am not allowed to put in more than 10k per year, most people can put in 40k pre tax) but can't complain. Also have 150k of equity in an investment property but that was just luck (market timing saw the value double).
OP - put in as much as you can as early as you can!

myself2020 · 05/01/2020 18:26

Early 40s, and i have about 100k in my uk pension pot, a similar amount in 2 different pension pots abroad (from working in the respective countries). i like to spread the risk, so 3 different currencies suits me.

desperatesux · 05/01/2020 18:30

I'm not in the UK but yes even here I'll hit my limit soon. I have asked in future large contributions be paid in cash. I don't have anything else in my name but my husband has a lot of property and a large pension which I assume I'll get some of if we split

Fatted · 05/01/2020 18:38

DH and I have both paid into LGPS since early 20's. In the last few years, it has been the knowledge that I have paid in for almost 20 years that has kept me in the public sector when everything else has been going to shit.

I'm 40 this year. I honestly don't think there will be a state pension when DH and I come to retirement age.

siring1 · 05/01/2020 18:40

51 years old about 500,000

Mummyshark2019 · 05/01/2020 18:41

Wow. Very envious of some of these pension pots! I have quite a few but not much in them. Will need to add everything up.

DartmoorChef · 05/01/2020 18:43

Nothing. I will be working til I drop dead.

FlorencesHunger · 05/01/2020 18:46

Not much as I just set up a sipp yesterday at the grand age of 28. I also have a lisa with little to know hope of buying so that will contribute to my pension pot too, so around 1k atm Confused.

Hope the state pension is around or my financial situation improves massively through time.

There is a useful pension calculator on a .gov site that would put it into perspective for your partner, plus it lets you know the state of your state pension contributions.

TrickyD · 05/01/2020 18:53

As well as our public service pensions, and despite the fact that both DH and I retired early, we also got decent lump sums, which we used to buy some property. Consequently we have an income of 100k plus, of which over 90k is pension. DH was lucky in that the really good deals were still around - based on highest salary. Obviously better than the current teachers’ pension scheme which is based on career earnings. Nevertheless it is better than many others and certainly better than none at all.

BaolFan · 05/01/2020 20:25

Age 40 and have £50k pot so far, which isn't great but the focus has been on mortgage and paying down negative equity. Planning to throw much more at it over the next few years!

Metaplasia · 05/01/2020 20:31

£72. I'm 29. Currently a student though so hoping to get saving properly once employed full time, otherwise I'll be completely screwed as I own absolutely fuck all asset wise.

MeganChips · 05/01/2020 23:32

I’m 46 and have 160k. I aim to increase my percentage contribution by 1% per year for as long as I can.

DH has about 120k in his but started later so pays much higher contributions.

blue25 · 05/01/2020 23:47

Public sector pension, so on track to get 41k a year pension on retirement, plus state pension.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/01/2020 23:51

Public sector workers may not get full state pension as you were automatically opted out the full state scheme. Think this stopped in about 2014 but any years prior to that your NI will only count to Level 1 state pension. During this time you paid less NI.

Bouledeneige · 05/01/2020 23:53

I think I have the equivalent of £42K a year plus whatever extra I generate over the next ten years and the state pension.

schoolcats · 06/01/2020 00:00

Enough that I will be better off when I retire.

Vgbeat · 06/01/2020 00:00

I'm 38 and have 0 🤦

NemophilistRebel · 06/01/2020 00:03

Early 30’s £3500
