TV nudity is it just me?

Not sure if this is the right category but wanted people's opinions.

I've noticed I feel uncomfortable watching shows or films that show just female nudity.
It really bothers me when it just feels like it's done for the sake of it and the male cast members aren't equally as nude or not nude at all. I don't feel bothered when it makes sense to the story or is artistic as such.

I've put it down to being pregnant right now and not feeling attractive but I also notice I feel its a lot to do with me feeling like it's not fair that often it's just women and male actors you might see a bum but i don't feel it's the same to a women having her breasts out or do you think it is?

I read an article the other day I think it was in the metro about Emilia Clarke and how she really struggled and felt pressured into nude scenes in game of thrones and now I wonder if all these young actresses feel like that at times.

I'm also young in my 20s but feel as I'm getting older I've noticed just how unequal stuff like this is in the media and TV and film.

I'm not good at articulating my point of view. Do I need to work on my self esteem or am I right to feel these things and not alone in that.

I am not against nudity (lived in Germany for nearly half a decade). I am, however, strongly against using female nudity for 'shock value' which sadly seems to be a case with plenty of shows these days. Even the actresses in Blue is the Warmest Colour mentioned that they felt uncomfortable shooting that nude lesbian sex scene.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 05/01/2020 17:22

I don't mind nudity if it's in context but it's nearly always gratuitous. I have got to the point now that if a series/film etc has loads of swearing, lots of sex scenes and violence I just turn it off. There are fewer and fewer programmes that are made well, with a real plot'/message and don't include titilation for the masses. It's a shame.
I tried GoT but just hated it. I actually feel that a lot of TV includes objectification /abuse of women or stories about rape and killing which nearly always include a woman as routine now. No one appears to question it. I do.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 05/01/2020 17:23

I agree with Minster that watching TV like that with a child around is really wrong.

Whatisnormalhere · 05/01/2020 17:27

You are right it is wrong. He was watching it on his PC. So our son would see it if he looked at the screen. But yeah I won't let that happen again. He started watching it while we were sleeping in the morning but binge watched it through the day...

Kittykat93 · 05/01/2020 17:27

Totally agree too many series these days are just full of naked women. And why are they always drop dead gorgeous with amazing bodies? Why don't they look like normal people? It really put me off game of thrones.

Londongirl86 · 05/01/2020 17:31

At least in peaky blinders the sex scenes are more realistic.

I also hate watching stuff with my parents if it's rude lol. I'm 30 so it doesn't happen often. But when I was younger I found it odd.

MoonlightMistletoe · 05/01/2020 17:43

When there are scenes of beautiful naked women on screen while you are watching with your partner does it make any of you think " ah bet you are loving this you prick"?

No just me ok 😂
I'm definitely insecure but I am working on it, it would help if there was a balance!

Tattooedmama · 05/01/2020 17:52

I thought i was the only one who gets insanely jealous watching nude scenes with my partner Blush
Im not in the best shape after 4 kids, not exactly big but my deflated tits make me feel worse when watching stuff like that Sad

Tattooedmama · 05/01/2020 17:53

Moonlight definitely not just you 😬

Whythoughlol · 05/01/2020 17:57

it's always the same perky c to d boobs I'm in my 20s and know after I finish breastfeeding my last I'm going to be flat chested with saggy boobs. Just depressing you never see anyone young on TV with boobs like that and it's just going to be a constant reminder I'm less beautiful after having kids whilst guys aren't effected at all haha

What did anyone think of the sex scenes in The Affair? Know that's an old series now but I only watched it last year. I didn't find the scenes unsexy necessarily (well some definitely are) and because it had quite a lot of shagging, between different sets of characters, I thought it was quite a good cross section...

The equivalent of full boob would surely be flaccid willy? I think erection is next level up. But you never see flaccid willy/ball bag do you?

VirtualHamster · 05/01/2020 18:02

But you never see flaccid willy/ball bag do you?

Black Sails definitely had flaccid willys - must have been plenty as I didn't even watch the series but saw a fair amount just in passing!

thebearwentoverthebumble · 05/01/2020 18:05

I agree with you op and I felt even worse about it when pregnant. Like you say, now I'm able to have a little glass of wine and laugh it off or I'm not as insecure about the way I look but being pregnant made me crazy!!
I do think it's silly i was watching a thriller the other day and the lady was running herself a bath, all pretty with her hair up perfectly and then she slowly drops her pretty bathrobe that doesnt have baby sick on it and isnt all big and woolly 🤣
Why dont they show what it's really like getting in the bath? I strip off and chuck my clothes on the bathroom floor and slowly get in ooing aaing because it's too hot or too cold and then I sit there (maybe shave everything) usually cut myself and after washing I'm boiling hot and get back out again, usually slip a bit trying to climb out too.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but on Game of Thrones when Cerci does the walk of Atonement they used a body double as the actress wouldn't do it. For those who didn't see, the character had to walk naked through the city and was pelted with shit and rotten food.
They filmed it however by merging the actresses face into the body doubles body so there are full frontal shots.

Biancadelrioisback · 05/01/2020 18:16

I can never spell the Game Of Thrones character names right first time

ferretface · 05/01/2020 18:16

Ep 5 of the Witcher (the one with the djinn) has more nudity than I think I've ever seen on TV before, way more than GOT.

I was uneasy watching it because although most of it could be argued as a 'female empowerment' lens it's female empowerment as viewed through the male gaze (eg the orgy scene). I also felt uneasy for the young actress Anya Chalotra, she is only 23 and this is her first major role.

WarmSausageTea · 05/01/2020 18:20

I don’t mind on-screen nudity as such, but prefer it to be balanced (male/female) and not just for titillation or exploitative.

I wouldn’t ever compare an on-screen body with mine; that way lies madness.

nowaypose · 05/01/2020 18:21

YANBU at all. I feel like an old fuddy duddy but I have been known to stop watching films or programmes that contain lots of unnecessary nudity. It does always seem to be women and it’s often completely pointless. I don’t think it’s to do with your self esteem, I think women just get tired of having other women’s tits thrust in our faces.

Charlottejbt · 05/01/2020 18:21

I agree, it's really cringey. I don't have a TV any more or watch current movies, and I'm surprised that the seediness of the obligatory topless scene has persisted into the "Me Too" era.

Charlottejbt · 05/01/2020 18:23

I don’t think it’s to do with your self esteem, I think women just get tired of having other women’s tits thrust in our faces.

Exactly. It bothered me most when I was young and my boobs were as good as any actress'. Which wasn't the point, obviously.

dementedma · 05/01/2020 18:28

I rather liked the nude Dracula scene, I must admit!

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/01/2020 18:31

I recently watched a programme, can’t for the life of me remember what, that employed an old nudity device that I hadn’t seen for years. Absolutely no place in the plot for nudity but the two detectives or whoever, meet up for a drink in a strip club or a pub with a stripper performing. No relevance whatsoever to the storyline but just an excuse to show some nude women. Desperately sad really. ☹️

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 05/01/2020 20:16

Best nude scene I've seen was Joanna Scanlan in No Offence. Jiggly bits, and wobbly tummy, all unapologetically shot. It was one of those scenes where you felt like the actress was happy to do it and gave no fucks that she's not your slim model ideal. I often feel that nudity is shoehorned in to pad out lack of content in programmes, as a lingering boob shot is easier to film than dialogue.
