To take my handbag to bed?

hellcarryingahandbag · 04/01/2020 23:48

Hi all,
I have always put everything I will need or want in my handbag, and taken it to bed, or the room I’m going to sit in. I am not in good health, so I like to have everything with me. The thing is that I put things in my bag that I want to put in a different room, or that I want to have handy, I don’t go out with the cordless landline in my handbag or anything Grin. My grandmother has always done the same thing, and my mother thinks it’s lunacy. I am never without my handbag, as I feel better knowing everything I need is easily accessible. Are my grandmother and I right or is my mother?

Why do men not carry around a supply of ‘essentials’ at all times? In my experience they expect women to have these things (paracetomol, tissues etc.) to hand when they need them.

YummyChipCurryDip · 05/01/2020 09:30

I take nothing to bed with me except water, but must admit that when I leave the house I always have a rush around looking for where I've left my bag. It is a new year's resolution to find a permanent home for it, and to place it there every time I return home. It has my purse, tissues and pens, and a tiny bottle of perfume in it. Nothing I would need indoors. (Apart from occasionall online shopping when I have to rush round looking for my bag).

BeckyButters · 05/01/2020 09:32

You do realise that having your valuables upstairs next to you doesn't stop all thieves. They'll just come up and get them.....

Amazed at what everyone puts in these bags. Medication I can understand. Keys phone purse for me and I don't always need a bag. Handcream, lip salve, tablets etc I just have multiples of in car, home, work, downstairs loo etc.

BeyondMyWits · 05/01/2020 09:35

We had to do the emergency grab and run in the night once due to a fire in the house.

Was glad I had my bag there to hand. Phone, money, cards, address book, diary (before smart phone era), medication, keys (useless after when you could just walk in where the front door used to be... but hey-ho)

zoobincan · 05/01/2020 09:40

I fear that if you left car keys in the hall and the car was stolen, that the insurance company might be awkward about paying out because you’d made it easy for the thief

Don't be ridiculous.

People don't half spout some shite on here Hmm

As if the insurance company make a decision based on which room in your own house the keys were in Confused

slartibarti · 05/01/2020 09:41

I don't have a handbag and manage fine.
The thought of rummaging through a load of stuff to find my keys brings me out in a cold sweat

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 05/01/2020 09:42

My handbag lives down the side of the couch when I'm at home, the only thing I take to bed is a book.

My mum always takes her handbag up to bed with her though so I don't find it weird, especially not for those who want medication to hand.

My keys live in the front door. I'm much more fussed about being able to get out in the event of a fire than I am about being burgled. I had my purse stolen, driving licence bank cards and all, a couple of times when I was a student so I know it's a pain, but I still worry less about theft than fire.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/01/2020 09:46

@Roussette, you’re being silly. People are listing ALL the things that they like to have in their handbag when they’re out and about. SOME of those things will be stuff they also need upstairs in bed at night eg glasses, phone/tablet, so it makes sense to Just take the same bag upstairs with you, as some people take a glass of water to bed, and whatever other shit needs returning upstairs as you head up there so your hands are full. No-one wants to be unpacking and repacking stuff in a bag all the time and juggling multiple items as you go upstairs to bed. It’s more organised keeping stuff like that in one place at all time so you’re not thinking “ah shit, where did I leave my work ID?” Etc when you’re trying to get out the house every morning. Grab your bag, and go. I don’t want to be grabbing my phone, purse and other separate different things etc on my way out, I want to pick up ONE thing, as I’m also carrying my lunch bag and one or two other things for work sometimes. Mentally checking off “have I picked up my phone/glasses/contact lens stuff/keys?” as you’re walking through the door is just an added hassle. “Have I got my handbag?” is done without even thinking. More efficient.

There are some shit handbag designs these days - i was looking for a new one yesterday and so many had unzipped opens with a press stud fastenings. Just a big cavernous bag. You need a proper handbag with side pockets for keys.

Do you all not have attached garages?

I don’t know anyone who has an attached garage that they keep their car in.
Most garages were built years ago when cars were much smaller.
Very uncommon in the uk on all but really expensive houses.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 05/01/2020 10:00

Do you all not have attached garages?

Vast swathes of us don't have garages at all.

Roussette · 05/01/2020 10:04

CurlyhairedAssassin
I don't mind being called silly! Smile
I just find it strange that some people need all this stuff and others like me trot off to bed with a glass of water! I just don't want to trip over a handbag holding all this clobber as I get out in the night for the bathroom.
We are all different I know

AutumnRose1 · 05/01/2020 10:28

OMD the garage thing

I live in a tiny flat!

re medication

my doctor gave me inhalers to keep by the bed and a set for handbag, but I've heard other asthma sufferers say their doctors won't give them 2 sets. so if I was in that boat, I might have my handbag next to the bed.

the person who said about insomnia, I do have a pile of books near the bed for exactly that reason.

OhTheRoses · 05/01/2020 10:33

No, our garage is separate.from the house. It contains one rather wanky job. Opportunists would not break in - it would be a professional job. Hence high security. More chance of an opportunist nicking something in the summer if I leave the side gate unlocked whilst gardening so I try not to.

mdh2020 · 05/01/2020 10:37

I don’t understand this thread. Where else would your handbag be but in the bedroom with you? I too use handbag inserts, usually from Primark, and wish someone had come up with the idea years ago. Not only is it easy to change bags but it also keeps what ever bag you are using tidy . Everything is always in the same place.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 05/01/2020 10:47

In the living room, same as it is when I'm in the kitchen, or bathroom, or garden.

I don't have any reason to trail it from room to room with me. Never needed my purse or work keys while I'm sitting on the bog Grin

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 05/01/2020 11:02

The weirdest thing about this whole thread is OPs strange bumping- for the insomniacs- whilst ignoring those that posted minutes before her “bump” Confused

@zoobincan, my mum 's claim was refused by her insurance company as they said her jewellery box was visible from the window - she had a downstairs room in a care home in a gated community but the thieves climbed the fence! Took ages to get them to partially overturn their decision.

Nonnymum · 05/01/2020 11:04

I've started to take my bag to bed since I heard of burglaries on the area. My purse, credit cards and keys are in my bag. It's must safer upstairs with me than in the living room if someone breaks in.

CoisFarraige · 05/01/2020 11:10

My granny had everything in her handbag - and in latter years put everything in it that was within her reach - napkins, keys etc. Anything that went missing would be found in her bag - including her false teeth Grin it was known as 'The Shed'!

zoobincan · 05/01/2020 11:11

Do not the same as simply keeping keys in the hall?

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 05/01/2020 11:12

Why, are you a 7ft tall martial arts expert trained in knife combat?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 05/01/2020 11:12

I don't now but I used to when DSS1 lived here because he wasn't to be trusted with other people's things (he robbed us blind and emptied DH's bank account). When he left home I stopped and have never done it since, although I do sometimes carry things upstairs in a carrier bag if I need then and have more than I can carry. My nan always takes her handbag to bed though.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 05/01/2020 11:12

Anyone worried about insurance, give your insurer a call and find out.

HepzibahGreen · 05/01/2020 11:15

lot of break ins these days are for cars. Leave your car keys downstairs even if you take everything else upstairs.
I do have the old keys to my written off car in the hallway bag, and my spare keys to my current car I keep on a hook by the door. Although not everyone on my street has a car anyway. Round here they would be after cars but also playstations, i phones etc and that stuff is in the front room (I will sacrifice my son's phone as he doest take his to bed).
I Ieave house keys in the door in case of fire.
But my actual handbag is next to me (with spare house keys). I'm a Northern Matriarch in training and would clobber the theives about the head with it in the manner of Nora Batty Wink
The nanna with the turkey definitely wins.
