To ask about microfibre towels

spingly · 04/01/2020 22:27

My towels at home need replacing, I have a microfibre towel for the gym and love it. Would you replace your home towels with them?

If not, why not?

If you would, why?

Thank you.

We use them on our boat so we don’t have lots of wet towels laying around. It means we have dry towels to shower with.
I wouldn’t use them at home personally. I like big, fluffy white bath sheets at home and sitting in them until I’m dry.

Glitterfisher · 04/01/2020 22:43

We use them at home, we have the biggest size. They dry really quickly so dont smell ever, the kids prefer them. It is nice having fluffy towels but we find it practical using the microfibre ones. We all have dressing gowns for the snuggly feeling Smile

Thehop · 04/01/2020 22:45

No, I’m not a huge fan.

Plus I recently learned that they lose micro plastics into the waterways when they’re washed, so not very environmentally friendly. Stick with good cotton.

spingly · 04/01/2020 22:45

@Glitterfisher that's how I feel. The biggest I've found is 200 x 100 which seems a good size. Is that what you've got?

I had not realised this, I will research and dependent on findings may well change my mind.

Terrible for the environment

I hate the feel of microfibre, makes my skin crawl

Ohtherewearethen · 04/01/2020 22:48

I can't stand the feel of them on my (dry as sandpaper) hands, they make me shudder. So I wouldn't personally use them. My husband got some for the dogs but I see no advantage to them at all to be honest.

Ohtherewearethen · 04/01/2020 22:49

Yes Joxter, same here! Makes me feel a bit sick.

GetUpAgain · 04/01/2020 22:49

We have some micro fibre cloths for cleaning, I HATE them, they feel so horrible. I would hate to use one as an actual towel!! If they are bad for the environment what's the best thing to do with the ones I already have?

PickAChew · 04/01/2020 22:49

I wouldn't because the fluff that comes off them when they're washed stays in the watercourse/ecosystem as microplastics.

And they're revolting to touch.

Glitterfisher · 04/01/2020 23:10

The microfibre towels arent like microfibre cloths. They feel totally different.

Yes they are the 200cm by 100, they're massive.

I will have a read up re the environmental thing but they definitely dont feel like the clothes, they are super smooth.

Glitterfisher · 04/01/2020 23:11

The microfibre cloths you use for cleaning have a sandpapery feel definitely and fluff comes off them. The towels are not made of the same thing as far as I'm aware

bellanotte22 · 04/01/2020 23:14

I thought most fabric that's man made gives off micro plastic? There's an arguement for washing machines to have in built filters.

Glitterfisher · 04/01/2020 23:19

Bellanotte22 according to what I have just read that is the case. I can't find anything to suggest microfibre towels are bad for the environment, in fact the opposite according to most sources.

Instagrrr · 04/01/2020 23:20

We use dock and bay for camping and swimming lessons. I wouldn’t have them for home towels but they are fab!

Glitterfisher · 04/01/2020 23:22

Dock and Bay do fab colours too!

Doobigetta · 04/01/2020 23:24

I don’t like them. It feels as though they just spread the water around rather than absorb it, and they’re weirdly slimy feeling. I’d use cotton hamman towels if you want an alternative to the standard ones.

spingly · 04/01/2020 23:26

@Doobigetta where would you get this from
please?

Apparently there is no shedding from the microfibre towels as they are made differently to the microfibre cloths

VanGoghsDog · 04/01/2020 23:40

The White Company do some lovely hammam towels.

spingly · 04/01/2020 23:41

@VanGoghsDog thank you, I'll look there.

CooCooCoo · 04/01/2020 23:43

I ended up with a micro fibre towel, it makes my skin crawl and it doesn’t absorb much

Glitterblue · 04/01/2020 23:43

I have some microfiber teatowels and they don't seem to dry the dishes or my hands at all. I don't like them and hate the feel of them.

Glitterfisher · 04/01/2020 23:47

@Glitterblue I think these are different to the beach/bath towels though. The tea towels/cloths are a weird feel. The towels soak up the water well, well the ones we have bought do.
