It's January. It's 4c and it's raining.
Surely no one is buying enough icecream to make it worthwhile?
Yet the van is still slogging on, Yankeedoodling his way up and down the street.
We live in a village, there's no events nearby.

God I thought I was being really cynical when my first thought was drugs! as in, it had never really crossed my mind before. 58, and never brought drugs off an ice cream van...

Cheeseboardcriminal · 04/01/2020 17:18

It's a way to launder the money into legit takings. No one is questioning how many 99s you have sold.

See also sunbed shops and video shops (obviously not now).

Lucked · 04/01/2020 17:25

If he is laundering money he doesn’t have to sell anything - just cook the books to pretend it is a legitimate source of a cash income.

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 04/01/2020 17:27

I regularly heard the chimes about 10/11am during Oct/November around here. Very strange. Never saw him though but they were loud enough to be nearby.

cstaff · 04/01/2020 17:30

Ours turns up every night at 8pm on the dot regardless of the season or weather. One year it was -5 degrees outside and bang on 8pm there he was. I don't think he was selling too many ice creams. Definitely a dealer.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2020 17:33

As someone who grew up in the land of the Ice Cream Mafia, I can tell you they don't play Greensleeves when they are selling their drugs!! Pizza deliveries also do drugs..

Anyway, in my nice village Ice Cream Joe does waffles and all sorts and people are always asking him to come round with ice cream. Judging by the Facebook posts, these are not euphemsisms for crack.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2020 17:37

watcher : its' Comfort and Joy.

ManonBlackbeak · 04/01/2020 17:39

I thought everyone knew that a lot of ice cream men also sell drugs on the side?

OhBigHairyBollocks · 04/01/2020 17:39

Our ice cream van is a drug dealer. Never had any sprinkles on my ice cream...... 🤔

NellysKnickers · 04/01/2020 17:39

We used to have one come round at 9pm on a Friday!

thefattestchip · 04/01/2020 17:40

'After all, why deal from a safely anonymous cuckoo-ed flat/car using a burner phone when you can instead use a very conspicuous vehicle that plays a tune and that will be surrounded by witnesses as soon as it stops? '

Yup.
The roadmen where we live must be disguising themselves very cunningly as children to buy their 'ice cream.'

Frariedeamin · 04/01/2020 17:42

I used to buy weed from the ice cream man at the local park so, as per pp, I think this is the likely option!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 04/01/2020 17:48

Go an ask him about his special offers.

PeanuttyButter · 04/01/2020 17:53

Our ice cream man sells drugs and cigs I believe. Never purchased them myself but he always has a crowd.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 17:54

Anyone here from Glasgow?

Code word: pokey hat.

LawnsLT · 04/01/2020 17:56

Drugs lol don’t you think the police would be on to them? It’s jan...prob just wants some space away from the family Wink

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2020 17:58

Yup butchy! Grin

Cattenberg · 04/01/2020 18:00

A few years ago, I went to stay with a friend in Priesthill, Glasgow. An ice-cream van used to come round at about 11pm. I wanted to go out and ask them what they had, but my friend wouldn’t let me. I still don’t know what they sold.

littlealexhorne · 04/01/2020 18:01

I've never heard of ice cream men selling drugs or cigarettes - is this really a common thing or just a myth?

BlueThursday · 04/01/2020 18:02

You clearly don’t live in Glasgow where an ice cream van will sell anything from nappies, Askit powders to single cigarettes.

And, of course, heroin.

thenightsky · 04/01/2020 18:03

Ours sells fresh fish from the docks. Also bottles of vodka and packs of 200 ciggies all with foreign labels.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 18:04

No myth. Horrendous case in Glasgow in the 80s of an entire family burned to death in their home over “ice cream” turf wars.

PlumsGalore · 04/01/2020 18:04

I remember as a kid when the ice cream van came mum would send us out with a bowl to fill and we would share it.

In the days where almost everyone has a freezer i find it hard to believe there is a genuine call for ice cream delivered except on the hottest days.

IMO ice cream vans only have a place now at tourist spots or events.

Talking of drugs, someone told me that when you hear random fireworks at strange times such as when its light that there has been a drug delivery. Don’t know how true it is.

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/01/2020 18:04

DD lived in a city centre & she thought she was hearing things when she heard the ice cream van at 11pm every night. Then someone explained it to her...

leccybill · 04/01/2020 18:07

Milkshake bars are the money-laundering enterprise of choice round my way. Literally one on every street. Limited opening hours!
