OMG help - carpet nightmare

posting for traffic.
I live with my OH and he's selling the house, where we will be moving to a house we own together.
He has had new carpets fitted really recently, which was a huge deal for him as the upstairs was bare floorboards for about 4 years due to some electrical work that kept getting delayed.

He's mega precious about the house anyway (gets really upset if theres a mark on the wall, if the dog gets mud on the skirting etc) and is spending all day, everyday renovating the house ready for sale.

Also, things are really stressy at the moment because of the new house.

I've just spilt dry PIGMENT on the new carpet in the spare bedroom. PIGMENT! (used for making paint). I tripped and the box fell from my hands Sad

This stuff is evil and it 110% stains (its pthalo green of all bloody colours, one of the most evil pigments).

He's downstairs and didn't hear me fall.

It's dry, so I'm hoping the majority will hoover up but I can't hoover until tomorrow morning when he's out walking the dog, because if he hears me hoovering now he'll know what's happened.
I'm not convinced hoovering will get it all up.

Carpet is dark grey, sort of speckled so at least it isn't white - worst case is I can pay to have someone come and replace it but I'd rather not own up to it if I can help it; he's already really stressed out.

HELP!

Has anyone had anything similar happen? How the fuck do I get pigment out of a carpet?!

So pleased you've told him and that he's seeing the light side of it.

LigPatin · 03/01/2020 22:57

It's not an expensive carpet - I say "high end rental" meaning that its the kind that landlords choose when they don't want to fork out for a fancy carpet as its "just a rental" but still want the place to look decent. In fact we've looked it up and it was £9 per square metre (we have a bargain basement style carpet place near us) - and the room is about 4 square metres.

Ahh lovely result

DickDewy · 03/01/2020 23:00

Glad he’s not cross! It’s a terrible stain, but also a terrible carpet from what I can see. 🤷‍♀️

Claim on your house insurance.

Turquiose · 03/01/2020 23:08

He sounds lovely and thoughtful that his main concern was you. Without meaning to be patronising well done for telling him. Better than worrying about it. What a corker of a spill though! 😂 😂

SisterSistine · 03/01/2020 23:09

Get on to a professional carpet cleaner, don't try and do it yourselves. I've seen them cope with all sorts of disasters on our local FB group. Toddlers with sudocrem. Nail varnish. Full tins of paint. But if you try and do it yourself you might make it harder for them.

NumbersStation · 03/01/2020 23:11

Glad all is well Smile and hope the replacement is as cheap as you think.

It is a rather beautiful green. Grin. I’d be saving a bit of it in a frame so you can chuckle over it every once in a while.

Rubyroost · 03/01/2020 23:13

Awww bless you

starfishmummy · 03/01/2020 23:17

Buy more pigment and dye the whole carpet? Pthalo green is lovely

Sickofrain · 03/01/2020 23:17

We got brick dust out of a brand new, cream carpet, with hours of hoovering and carpet foam cleaner. Good luck!

Justaboy · 03/01/2020 23:19

Call a pro cleaner in, thay have access to chemicals that arent availabe to the general public!!

torwen · 03/01/2020 23:19

I have got biro ink out of a beige carpet with hairspray, spray on and dab it out. It just seemed to detach from carpet onto paper towel 🤷‍♀️

Jamiefraserskilt · 03/01/2020 23:29

Bung some wet bicarbonate of soda on it and let it dry overnight then Hoover out and see where you are after that.

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 03/01/2020 23:29

To be fair I am totally overly precious about my carpets too but only because they were expensive carpets and they’re only a few months old.

Just tell him and clean it up ASAP surely the longer you leave it the worse it’ll be? What about bio laundry liquid and a damp cloth?

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 03/01/2020 23:31

Just seen the update glad all is ok and I actually love that colour of green! Would look fab as a whole carpet shade!

Hollyhobbi · 03/01/2020 23:32

What are the floor boards like under it? New cheap carpet an option?

Poppinjay · 03/01/2020 23:34

Leave it and phone the insurance company in the morning. Ours sent someone to look at the grease DH walked through the house to see if it could be cleaned. My attempts at cleaning before calling them meant it was too badly damaged and had to be replaced.

We got new hall, stairs, landing and DD2's bedroom carpets. Three weeks later, he walked it from the garage into the hall again. I didn't have the balls to claim again so we are living with the (fairly small) black stains on the cream hall carpet for now.

CBsDad · 03/01/2020 23:35

@jimmyhill that had me in stitches.

Meirou90 · 03/01/2020 23:52

My good (!) printer with the best quality inks leaked onto our light grey carpet. I thought it was done for seeing as the inks are very archival. However, Fairy stain remover took care of it, got every last bit up. Just a bit of elbow grease required!

LuluJakey1 · 03/01/2020 23:52

Ahh, he sounds lovely! I spilled undiluted orange squash on a cream carpet. It stained it really badly. I spoke to a dry cleaners locally and the lady was so nice - she gave me a small bottle of clear liquid which I had to dab n and soak up pressing a towel on it. It lifted it out to the point where it was unnoticeable from 6 inches away. I don't know what it was.

Our bedroom carpet is oatmeal coloured. Since DCs it has been marked over and over. I put Vanish or any poundshop stain removal laundry powder in hot water so it fizzes and slosh it on and soak it up with towels. It takes out most stains. It is being replaced so I am unbothered about it doing any further damage but it never has.

HopeItComesWithBatteries · 03/01/2020 23:52

Stop stressing, seriously.

Stuff happens. It sounds like you’re more bothered than him potentially. And if that’s wrong, and there’s been an update, then he’s not worth worrying about anyway, run for the hills.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but this is an easy one. Stop stressing. 💐

Candymay · 03/01/2020 23:54

That’s brilliant news! So glad for you.

HopeItComesWithBatteries · 03/01/2020 23:56

Glad to read update, he sound like a keeper!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 04/01/2020 00:13

He sounds lovely!
Can you just sit the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner on the stain and put it on highest setting? Don't move it around, just sit it on there. Then pull it off and move it to another part of the stain.

I'm glad it wasn't as terrible as your feared it would be. Thanks]

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 04/01/2020 00:28

Honestly OP don't bother. I spent several years working on a paint mixing desk and you will not get that colourant out. Adding any kind of moisture will make it worse. It is second only to Pthalo blue and yellow oxide when it comes to staining. You can try sticky tape like you do to get dog hair out of clothes but it will be more damage control than a fix.
