To think parents can spend an hour in an trampoline park without alcohol

Our local trampoline park has started to sell alcohol. I'm not impressed and won't be going back. This should be a safe space where children don't see adults drinking

Why shouldn't children see adults drinking? It's not something to be ashamed of.

jimmyjammy001 · 04/01/2020 01:07

Maybe it is the only time the parents get to drink alcohol? They never get to drink outside of the trampoline park?

SuperMumTum · 04/01/2020 06:21

I don't drink much at all (maybe twice a month) but like a PP said sometimes I fancy a drink. Sometimes that will be in the afternoon when I have my kids and we are out with friends, sometimes it will be in the evening when they are in bed. If British people can have a healthy relationship with alcohol there is no reason why places shouldn't serve it. The idea that a place with a licence will result in kids witnessing extreme drunkenness is rubbish.

Now I have a very unhealthy relationship with sugar but apparently that is sold everywhere and kids are encouraged to binge on it. I'd much rather these places sold fewer sweets, slush puppies, ice lollies as that is much more harmful imo.

Bluerussian · 04/01/2020 07:43

There's nothing wrong in moderate drinking, it just struck me as odd that it would be sold at a trampoline park. However I've never seen a trampoline park and accept it may be quite different to how I imagine it.
A cafe with tea, coffee, snacks would strike me as more appropriate for a family outing.

Having wine with a meal at home or in a restaurant is normal, as is going to a pub occasionally and children see that all the time, think nothing of it.

Brilliant idea - have a few wines before inevitably driving your kid to A&E. What could go wrong?

If you’re ‘inevitably’ driving your kids to A&E after they’ve been trampolining, stop taking them - they’re doing it wrong.

How does the mere existence of an alcohol licence at such a venue turn people into drink drivers?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 04/01/2020 09:33

Agree, OP. Am not a Puritan and love a drink as much as the next person but don't see why booze is necessary or indeed appropriate here.

Even if you assume the booze is aimed at adult jump sessions , surely it's not a good combo for health and safety reasons - pissed people falling off trampolines or chundering....

I’ve never taken my kids trampolining and if I did it would be to a proper session, not a trampoline park.

I went to weekly trampolining sessions for about two years when I was a kid. My brother trained for much longer and won national competitions. I’ve spent an awful lot of time on and next to trampolines, with people who know what they are doing.

I broke my arm in two places after training for quite a while, in sessions with coaches and spotters and proper safety precautions, crash mats etc, and both my DB and I saw some awful accidents / injuries. My broken arm was a result of a spotter shouting out at the wrong moment and briefly distracting me - I can’t imagine how many distractions there are in a busy trampolining park.

If you’re taking your kid to a trampoline park then it probably is best to be in a fit state to drive afterwards. I don’t drive but wouldn’t have a drink before driving, and I definitely wouldn’t want to turn up at A&E smelling of wine, with an injured child.

I’ve never seen one of these places that doesn’t require a car to get there, certainly round here you’d have to drive to anything like this, but I guess that depends where you are.

happycamper11 · 04/01/2020 10:26

People who don't drive at all use trampoline parks too. Or should those children of car - less parents be excluded just in case they have an accident? Round here we get the bus!

SinkGirl · 04/01/2020 10:35

Well if you’re not driving then that particular point isn’t an issue, is it? What a bizarre comment. I don’t drive so I’m not sure why I’d discriminate against the children of non drivers 🙄

As I said I’ve never seen one of these places that doesn’t require a car to get there, certainly round here you’d have to drive to anything like this, but I guess that depends where you are.

happycamper11 · 04/01/2020 11:14

It was enough of an issue for you to write a small essay about it lol. And yes as you say all areas are different but most big parks would ensure they were on a bus route when choosing a site. Yours may be the exception

yolofish · 06/01/2020 22:29

TFB I have given this deep reflection and decided that an on-site bar is an absolute must for any parent waiting for their child to do any form of activity for which they pay and competent instructors are in charge...
