Long lost friend has taken a photo of my house and posted it on Instagram

Last week, a friend (whom I've not seen in nearly 2 years) texted me that she was in the area and asked we could meet to 'catch up on old times'. I unfortunately wasn't free and she told me that she could just stop by my place for a quick coffee. Fine. An hour of good conversation later, and she brought out essential oils for me to try out and possibly buy! Bit odd, but I declined and we parted ways.

Today, I decided to look her up on Instagram for some reason and saw photos of my living room and kitchen with the caption 'new furniture!' The hashtags were all related to the oils she was selling, with the bottles being in the picture too so it looked like some sort of ad? I've messaged her about this but she hasn't replied yet.

Is there something I can do to get these pictures taken down?

Is your house lovely? She is one of the MLM- bots which try and fake an amazing life to encourage poor saps to join them. Comment on the picture ‘that’s my house’

AryaStarkWolf · 03/01/2020 12:59

How weird. I assume if it's for an advert you should have the right to complain but someone else how knows more about that needs to advise you.what a weirdo though

willloman · 03/01/2020 13:00

Outrageous - send her a bill for use of your images and time for photoshoot!
More seriously, yes report to FB or insta monitors.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 03/01/2020 13:00

How bizarre. Other than contact her, I'm not sure how you can force a takedown. You could comment on the post though, saying that it's your house, your furniture and the pics have been uploaded without your knowledge or permission. Depends on how much you value the friendship I guess.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 03/01/2020 13:00

Yes, call her out. Don't let her suck people in using your house.

DrManhattan · 03/01/2020 13:02

Is there anything in the pictures that can identify it as your home in terms of family photos etc.
That's off the chart strange behaviour. I best shes scewing now you have called her out on it.
Hope she takes them down.

happycamper11 · 03/01/2020 13:02

She's making out she's bought all the furniture with the proceeds of her essential oils to lure in poor unsuspecting people desperate for money. I don't know if you can have it taken down but you could comment and expose her

CommunistLegoBloc · 03/01/2020 13:02

How did she manage to take these pictures and arrange the bottles around your rooms without you noticing?

qazxc · 03/01/2020 13:02

As far as i know you can report photos or videos to instagram.
If she's that much of a brazen CF, it might be the way to go.

instapaints · 03/01/2020 13:04

It's just a normal house! The only thing that differentiates it from other houses I'd imagine is that things are 'new' since I've only moved in very recently.

I've reported it to Instagram but has anyone had any experience of them doing anything about it?

Witchofzog · 03/01/2020 13:05

Definitely call her out on this both in Insta and also via message. She is a cf who came to you with an agenda from the beginning to use your home to sell others a lifestyle. She is trying to make money from you which is not on

messolini9 · 03/01/2020 13:06

Don't message her, ring her. She either picks up or not, & either way you leave her in no doubt of your displeasure, telling her that she needs to tae the pics down immediately.

Then post on the CF's feed, explicitly stating that she is lying, is using pics without your knowledge or consent, & that you have zero to do with her MLM scheme.

Greenglassteacup · 03/01/2020 13:07

What a weirdo your ‘friend’ is!!!!

TidyDancer · 03/01/2020 13:07

Cheeky fucker! Nothing about MLM bots should surprise me but this takes the piss

instapaints · 03/01/2020 13:07

It's just bottles on the coffee table and countertop. I live alone and haven't gotten around to putting any photos or anything up yet so place is pretty generic and unidentifiable. I hate the idea of photos of it being out there though! Hell, I don't even post anything on Instagram aside from pictures of my mum's dogs!

OP posts:
AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 13:09

Call her out. And congrats on having so good style someone wants to pretend it's theirs!

thejollyroger · 03/01/2020 13:09

I don’t think you’re legally protected against someone taking a picture inside your home. They might take it down, though.

readingismycardio · 03/01/2020 13:10

This is so not on, especially it bugs me that you haven't seen her for TWO YEARS. Comment on insta "I know it's knew, just bought it last yearGrin"

Handsnotwands · 03/01/2020 13:13

How did you not notice her arranging bottles, figuring out the lighting and angles?

Fr0g · 03/01/2020 13:13

Depends on how much you value the friendship I guess.

Friendship? - SM liberties aside, the woman hasnt been in touch for a couple of years, then pushes a get together that turns out to be some weird (probably pyramid) selling scheme - no longer seems to be much of a friendship.

I’d ask Instagram to take it down but if they don’t, or if they do but she reposts it, I’d comment to make it clear that the photographs were taken of my home etc etc.

Got to love a MLM-bot

LazyDaisey · 03/01/2020 13:15

“ don’t think you’re legally protected against someone taking a picture inside your home”

Yes, you are. It’s not a public space. It’s a private property and of course you have a right who can photograph it! It’s also illegal advertising.

I’d shame her... take a screenshot and post business must suck if you need to pretend my furniture is yours. Hashtag the company and tell her unless she takes these down, you’re putting your screenshot all over social media and tagging her sponsors and her product

BettysLeftTentacle · 03/01/2020 13:15

She’s a MLM CF. Call her out on it and block her!

thejollyroger · 03/01/2020 13:16

What law are you referring to? I think you have the right to remove them from your home before they take the picture; not sure you have a legal right to stop them, or stop them publishing it. What law?
