Deodorant for a child help

I have noticed my 8.5 year old has smelt sweaty the last few weeks. I was surprised that this would happen so early and thought it was a one off but has been noticeable a few times now in the last 2/3 weeks.

Has anyone else experienced this at this age ?
I have been making sure he washes his armpits in the bath and was thinking of getting a deodorant as reading online probably better than getting him antiperspirat at such a young age ?

Can anyone suggest one ? Probably want a mild scent as don't want him stinking of Lynx or anything just yet 🤪

Scrubbington kids deodorant works well for mine.

NUUD

It's a paste which only needs applying twice a week. It doesn't stop the sweating - but does stop the bacteria smelling (of BO)

Not cheap but lasts a while - you only need a tiny amount

Schmidt's absolutely.

Avoid aerosols. Something natural, though I don't know of any x

drivingtofrance · 03/01/2020 11:16

Also recommend using bar soap with a flannel to wash in the armpit and over and around the shoulders too. A good scrub is needed sometimes.

BrokenWing · 03/01/2020 11:19

We started with Bionsen which worked for a while until he was older and really started to pong. There was something else between Bionsen and Sure 24hr, but cant remember the name right now.

Around this age we also started daily morning showers before school which also helped enormously and it is a good age to start getting them into the habit before they become a water adverse teenager!

With me, I found that the smell lingered on DDs shirts even after washing.
Finally found that the solution is to spray the shirt underarms with Stardrops Vinegar spray and leave for 30mins before washing. I'd tried vinegar before and it didn't help but I just sprayed and washed - it's important to let it work.

Cryingoverspilttea · 03/01/2020 11:30

Change his shower gel and any bath stuff to Sanex or similar zero scented stuff. Some bath stuff makes skin bacteria stink worse.

Cactusmum · 04/01/2020 11:05

Ive found the cream deodorants work better for my daughter 13, the aerosol ones dont work. Im not in the UK so i dont know what the equivalent would be there but there is also a natural one called "No Pong" that works well here.

Cactusmum · 04/01/2020 11:06

also ive found some kids just have the body chemistry that smells more i think.. my 17 yr old has never had any problems but the 13 yr old started having issues around 10/11. Ive never had any problems but my younger sister does.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/01/2020 11:08

agree with above advice about using a bar of soap, they seem to work much better than the liquid stuff.

Redcrayons · 04/01/2020 11:08

Mine started on daily morning showers around the same age. Neither of mine keen on deodorant till A bit older but at least they smelt fresh leaving the house in the morning.

BertieBotts · 04/01/2020 11:10

Just started DS off with a sensitive roll on. Seemed to work OK.

Mulledwineinajug · 04/01/2020 11:30

Mine started to get stinky around the age of 8. It was earlier than I expected too. I just gave them a sensitive roll on like dove or simple. Dd quickly decided she preferred the aerosol.

Festivefrolicsnextyear · 04/01/2020 11:31

I’d just get a scent free roll on like dove or nivea.

AuditAngel · 04/01/2020 11:35

My DD aged 9 has been stinky for about 18months, worse than her 13yo brother or 12yo sister. Proper soap, not shower gel to wash with, we use a roll on, but I like Dove or Sanex, plus regular clean shirts.

I the summer we have to have daily “pit inspection”

Bluerussian · 04/01/2020 11:37

Yes, mine starting smelling at 8. He always bathed in the morning but would come home from school stinking! I bought him a deodorant/antiperspirant, quite a mild one. Problem solved.

JeezyPeeps · 04/01/2020 11:38

I've used a few on here, and my vote is for nuud. Absolutely love it, worth every penny. I get the smarter pack, which is two slightly larger tubes, and that lasts me a year, more or less.

DropZoneOne · 04/01/2020 11:45

Another vote for bar soap in place of shower gel. Just something like Simple, nothing with added moisturisers. It really does reduce the smell.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/01/2020 11:48

Bar of soap and a scrub with a flannel, clean clothes every day. Might not need more than that tbh although ds was using deodorant from age 9. Think he used Simple.

This stuff is amazing, it's hard to describe as it lets you sweat but there is no odour to it at all, even on the hottest summers day. DH and I have both converted to it, and I was having to use really heavy duty things before like TripleDry/Perspirex as I used to smell awful. I wish I'd found this years ago, it came in DD's birchbox and she gave it to me to try!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/01/2020 11:52

I agree about daily morning showers. My 9yo dd & 8yo ds have started that this academic year (vs the previous shower or bath after school) neither of them were/are keen on the idea of a deo just yet but are happy with this, we only have bar soap. Clean shirts every day too, was previously every other unless dirty.

whyismysoullost · 04/01/2020 21:48

We have the Thai Crystal deodorant mist. You can get it from Amazon and it's natural.

Ohyesiam · 04/01/2020 21:54

My bf teaches years 3 and 4 at primary and she gives the wash your armpits and use deodorant talk because the kids start to get smelly at that age.

ActualHornist · 04/01/2020 21:58

I just bought mine a solid, unscented one. It might have been Simple. Not roll on. Was around 8/9 I think. Daily showers not needed here, they apply it after a shower though.

Also make sure he’s actually washing the smelly bits Grin one of mine can be a bit lax in this department!
