Boycott Cypress as unsafe for holidays

Gbtch · 03/01/2020 10:01

Recent news reports make it clear to me that women are not safe to travel to Cypress. Rapists, however, seem to be protected there. AIBU to suggest that all women, and non-rapist men should avoid Cypress at all costs?

JosefKeller. Of course it's a thread about rape, that's literally what the OP and discussion is about.

You're making yourself look very silly when your aim was to look very clever and shut down discussion of rape.

It hasn't worked.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 15:17

Why do you pretend that I want to shut up discussion of rapes? Don't be daft. You don't come up well from a discussion if you make stuff up.

If Cyprus wasn't "trendy", then there would be calls to boycott Cyprus AND other places.. That seem to be missing from this thread though

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/01/2020 15:19

Anyone else have "Insane in the membrane", in their head?

Turnyourlightsdownlo · 03/01/2020 15:23

And 'virtue signalling' is the conspicuous demonstration of your own personal morality or opinions to try to make yourself look good.

This is a discussion about rape. Unless you think rape is a-okay and people speaking out against it are 'jumping on the bandwagon' (what band waggon? Thinking rape is wrong? Thinking victims should be supported and not convicted of being liars? ) there is no virtue-signalling here.

Dyrne · 03/01/2020 15:29

Maybe because the thread got derailed pretty quickly by the Whataboutery.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/01/2020 15:31

It's that ruddy Whataboutery Klaxon. Works every time calling them over Confused

Dyrne · 03/01/2020 15:37

There’s a thread about cats in Active at the moment. I’m going to barge in and ask why they’re not talking about guinea pigs.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 03/01/2020 16:10

I live in the Republic of Cyprus and have had first hand experience of the Cypriot police after my friend and I were brutally attacked six years ago on a night out (by strangers). The police responded very quickly and took us to hospital where we were treated for our injuries (cuts, bruises, stitches, x-rays). We were then taken back to the police station and interviewed separately, by this point it was getting light and the officers had changed shift. I was begging them for a glass of water and I was sitting there in my clothes from the night before (and covered in bruises) The fucking policeman took my statement while all the time, I kid you not watching a soap opera on the overhead TV. He'd ask me a question (how many drinks you have?) before turning his eyes back to the TV. My friend got slightly better treatment but only because her face was smashed in and needed stitches.

Plsnomorepeppapig · 03/01/2020 18:32

Why punish thousands of civilians who rely on the tourist industry due to this? Ridiculous. Bad things happen in all countries. Judicial systems possibly corrupt in many. Everything we read is from the media. Not one person on this thread is 100% aware of the entirety of the case in question. Boycotting an entire country in order to teach a government a lesson? Makes me think of people who use their children as weapons.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/01/2020 20:14

Crikey that's a leap and a half Confused

Non what happened to you and your friend was awful Thanks

PlanDeRaccordement · 03/01/2020 21:54

Fizzyice
^PlanDeRaccordement I think you’ve missed the point .
I believe OP is referring to the handling of it by the Cyprus police force^

The OP thinks the handling by the Cyprus police force was terrifying. Why? Because their investigation didn’t have the result the OP wanted. A rape claim doesn’t have the forgone conclusion that rape actually happened.

We have no evidence the Cyprus police force did anything wrong. None.

The only police force that is proven terrifying are the French police in Paris who actually gang raped a tourist at a police HQs, were caught and convicted this year.

happycamper11 · 03/01/2020 22:23

Bear in mind that Cyprus is effectively two countries. No reason why the north should lose out because of what has happened in the south.

You mean the illegally occupied part? Somewhere you can't even fly to directly from anywhere in the world apart from Turkey as it isn't recognised. I don't use text slang often but FML. To be honest I think this poster was just trying to show how clever they were knowing there were two parts.

lborgia · 03/01/2020 23:39

What the hell is the republic of Cyprus?!

Sounds as if you were treated appallingly, but it's not a republic, it's part of the commonwealth.

Equanimitas · 04/01/2020 00:30

Come off it, you don't need to be clever to know that, any idiot who goes on holiday there can discover it all by themselves. And I write as someone whose knowledge of geography is terrible.

Equanimitas · 04/01/2020 00:33

Iborgia, Cyprus is officially known as the Republic of Cyprus, and has been a republic since 1960.

Italiangreyhound · 04/01/2020 00:49

Nonstopbuttmachine I am so sorry to hear what happened to you.

Plsnomorepeppapig "Why punish thousands of civilians who rely on the tourist industry due to this?" Choosing not to go to a country, which you deem to be unsafe, if not about punishing innocent people. It's about self preservation.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 04/01/2020 00:59

YABU - we don't know what happened, and you seem to be jumping the gun and assuming the outcome.

It's perfectly plausible that the woman was raped. It's perfectly plausible that she made up the allegations once she found that she'd been videoed. It's perfectly plausible that the police acted improperly. It's perfectly plausible (and in fact highly likely) that trial by press and internet leads to faulty conclusions. We don't know.

happycamper11 · 04/01/2020 01:48

*What the hell is the republic of Cyprus?!

@lborgia

The republic of Cyprus is the southern 2/3rds of the island which is a member of the European Union

The TRNC - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the northern, Turkish occupied part of the island but that is not recognised by any country or organisation outside of Turkey. ROC is recognised internationally though so I've no idea where your got your info.

Italiangreyhound · 04/01/2020 01:56

'We don't know what happened'...

Well we know a fair bit.

It was clearly a miscarriage of justice www.justiceabroad.co.uk/news/defence-to-appeal-after-teenager-found-guilty-of-public-mischief-after-reporting-group-rape-in-cyprus

and we know that there is

And we know there is evidence from Forensic Pathologist, Marios Matsakis.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 04/01/2020 02:17

I'm kind of shocked that so many on MN are so blasé about this.

I'm not really one to jump on a bandwagon but I've been appalled by this case.

There's video evidence and a medical examiner's statement saying that her injuries are consistent with rape. She was refused access to her lawyer for 9 hours and only after being interviewed on her own for that time did she eventually agree to retract her statement. Linguistics experts say that her retraction statement was not written by her or any other native English speaker. Since having access to a lawyer she's immediately reverted to saying it was rape. Police dropped all charges against the men instantly and have prosecuted her through the courts and this young girl is now facing a potential jail sentence.

It's chilling. Yes, the UK justice system needs some improvements. Yes, there are many other countries in the world which are terrible too. But Cyprus is a popular party zone and in my ignorance I thought it was reasonably OK.

From everything I've read, this is utterly appalling. If this were my daughter I'd be wanting to do some very bad things to those men right now.

Ereshkigal · 04/01/2020 02:36

So many similarities to the case of rapey piece of shit Ched Evans.

Yes. Has been my thought throughout.

Ereshkigal · 04/01/2020 02:40

Nonstop that's awful Thanks

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/01/2020 04:36

I wouldn't visit Cyprus having seen how the police have handled the case. I have read a number of reports of what allegedly happened, plus the expert evidence on the "confession", and I'm inclined to believe her.

I feel the same about Greece, having known someone who suffered a horrific rape there and how she was subsequently treated. I don't think they are safe places for young women when things go wrong, whomever is at fault.

Gbtch · 06/01/2020 19:32

Thanks for sharing your views.
My concern is how mighty the response appears against a young woman who says she has been raped by 12 men. Yet again the system seems to be so overwhelmingly weighted in favour of men that in the actions taken by the authorities there is non existent concern for the ( female) victim. In fact, quite the opposite- she is being brutally punished. I know this happens elsewhere too. I am not naive. But
As this is such a public example, I think decent men and women should protest by boycotting Cyprus. In my view we still have a long way to go worldwide, before women are respected and valued as equals. Places like Cyprus show us the UK is a relatively safer place, thank goodness.
Yet that some posts here are so aggressively against a boycott confirms for me that we still have some way to go!
Some years ago I read that if we carry on at our current rate of progress we will reach true equality in 600+years! I’m beginning to believe that.
I saw today that there are people with strong voices trying to help the victim. I think she will need considerable support and hope with all my heart that she can survive and recover.
Ideally the men will be brought to justice too, but I have no hope whatsoever that this will happen.

Agree with you Op. We will not be going on holiday to Cyprus.
