AIBU to think this will lead to just more escalation in what is already a volatile area, given all the issues in Iran at the moment, the proxy wars, the recent arrival of US troops in Iraq.

We also have some British troops in Iraq, as well as Royal Navy ships in the region. This escalation affects us as well.

This person who was assassinated does have blood on his hands www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jan/03/who-is-qassem-suleimani-profile-iran but does a drone strike killing of him.

The response from Iran

"The Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said on Twitter: “The US’ act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani – THE most effective force fighting Daesh (ISIS), Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al – is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation. The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.”

What consequences will there be?

Those that worry war with Iran would be like Iraq, it would be far, far worse.

yolofish · 03/01/2020 13:43

Poor Nazanin... I think this will make life even more difficult for her. And for everyone else too. My current hope is that BJ is too pissed to take the call from POTUS, thereby buying a tiny bit of time (military coup in the US too much to hope for?)

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2020 13:50

Patroclus indeed

When is the “west” going to learn to keep out of the ME

Patroclus · 03/01/2020 13:52

Lifecraft, im afraid you're delusional about the average Iranian's beliefs..

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:20

My view on this, is that we should never refer to other people/countries as "terrorists" if we carry out terrorist attacks around the World.
Drone attacks and assasinations are terrorist attacks.

Never a truer word was spoken.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:22

When is the “west” going to learn to keep out of the ME

When they're no longer dependent on income from arms and when they don't need the oil.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/01/2020 14:22

"When is the “west” going to learn to keep out of the ME"

Yep
Saddam Hussein was a ruthless dictator, but invading Iraq caused the deaths of far more people than he did
and de-stabilised the whole region,
created the conditions for IS to form,
then refugees ....

Many of the ME regimes are theocratic hellholes - some like Saudi Arabia we support, because .... money of course

The record of Western intervention is that it makes the situation even worse for the people there
AND
exports serious problems back to us

Mockers2020Vision · 03/01/2020 14:22

How bad?

Think Sarajevo, 1914.

Maybe that bad.

Bad Bad Bad.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:24

If Iran took out BJ, we'd instantly declare war. What makes us think we can do the same to them with no repercussions I'll never fathom.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:27

As for Trump's tweet! He wants to negotiate now? Pahahahhaaha. Bit late for that sonny boy.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 03/01/2020 14:28

This was terrorism on foreign soil.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:28

Btw - I briefly saw a news bulletin a few days ago, but don't know the extent of it - can anyone link or summarise?

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:30

Sorry - that should say about the attack on the US embassy.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 14:32

This gobshite on Sky News is irritating me.

Xenia · 03/01/2020 14:32

US is the Great Satan in Iran and UK is the little satan and we p robably have been since the fall of the Shah and earlier. They just don't seem to like us. That's just tough. We are here to stay and if the Iranians want to regain some of the freedoms their women had back in the 1970s when they could even wear mini skirts if they wanted then they need to come into the 21st century and get with Western ways. Or they can remain in relative poverty controlled by medieval mullahs.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_of_the_Ottoman_Empire

It goes back a lot further than Saddam

With his cockerel in the background lol

A former CIA director has predicted there will be a terrorist strike that will kill a senior American official anywhere in the world soon

As the wife of a military officer, I pray the UK aren’t dragged into this.

16 November 2011 Trump talking about Obama.

Apt.

Mockers2020Vision · 03/01/2020 15:56

The eventual response to the Iranian Airbus shot down by the US Cruiser was Pan Am 103, paid for by Iran and facilitated by the PFLP and Lybia.

Iran does not necessarily act symmetrically. They do whatever they can do.

No more overseas hunting trips for Don Jr, I'd say.

Roussette · 03/01/2020 16:03

This unrolled Twitter thread is well worth reading for those interested in what could be a possible outcome

LochJessMonster · 03/01/2020 16:12

Can I ask then, what do you think America should have done in response to the bombing of their embassy?

Roussette · 03/01/2020 16:19

It wasn't bombed. It was stormed by protesters.

What Trump has done is the equivalent of Iran sending over a drone and killing the Vice President.

Roussette · 03/01/2020 16:21

p.s. The Embassy was not evacuated and the protest died down before nightfall.
