Can I eat out of date Stilton?

I have some Stilton in the fridge that says use by dec 25. It’s been kept in a Tupperware container and smells no worse than your average stilton block.
Should I eat it?

I find it sometimes gets quite bitter but I don't think it s dangerous, just maybe not to your taste

cantfindname · 01/01/2020 20:25

No no no do NOT eat it.

Send it to me for safety checks...

Yes, I'd go up to about 2.5 weeks over ( mine doesn't have a date on and I've been eating it since mid Dec )

bettybattenburg · 01/01/2020 21:08

Whatever you do don't make ice cream with it.

SantaBeckett · 01/01/2020 21:19

@betty . . . Now i like stilton and when the fancy takes me I like ice cream but stilton ice cream . . . . . I think I will pass on that.
It sounds like you have tried it though ? . . . .do tell . . .

bettybattenburg · 01/01/2020 21:21

I tried it on holiday one year, it was easily the most disgusting thing that I have ever eaten.

Owlsintowels · 01/01/2020 21:25

@MRex not sure if you mean no Stilton in pregnancy or no past-date Stilton in pregnancy, but if the former then actually Stilton is fine.

It's the 'soft' in cheese which can harbour listeria, not the 'blue' or 'mould', hence brie is bad but Stilton is fine

The above said I personally think its fine to eat any cheese in pregnancy, though I did draw the line at some cheese I made myself and aged for a year in my cellar.

Does anyone know what the official line is in France or Italy re eating cheese when pregnant? Just wondering!

Yes! Enjoy.

SantaBeckett · 02/01/2020 00:28

@bettybattenburg
You were a brave soul to try it.
Somethings just should not be messed about with .

I tried the merest morsel and then drank a lot of tea. Curiosity got the better of me.

I love buying yellow label skank rail cheese, there because its got to be sold before going out of date. Its almost ripe then. If its a soft French cheese, say brie or camembert, it's the only way of getting something that is even properly edible. Like avocados. Eat your Stilton, or keep it a few weeks.

Yes yes yes!!! Xmas Smile

We buy Stilton and deliberately keep it until it's a good couple of months past the use by date. The flavour grow exponentially. Our kids were eating it like this as soon as solids would go down. They also ate raw (unpasteurised) milk Brie and Cheddar.
