Can I eat out of date Stilton?

BloodyCats · 01/01/2020 18:13

I have some Stilton in the fridge that says use by dec 25. It’s been kept in a Tupperware container and smells no worse than your average stilton block.
Should I eat it?

Stilton is never out of date unless it's liquid

coconuttelegraph · 01/01/2020 18:40

Oh my, of course you can, serious question - what do you think is going to happen to a mature cheese on the stroke of midnight on a particular date? A cheese that takes months to make couldn't possibly have a set date on which it suddenly becomes inedible

Handy hints and tips www.castellocheese.com/en-gb/inspiration/how-to-store-cheese/

Lllot5 · 01/01/2020 18:58

I would. In fact I have done many times. It’s mouldy after all

BarbaraofSeville · 01/01/2020 19:05

I know I can google but I like asking people

Even when they often give a wrong answer? But in this case, any 'official' source is likely to reflect ridiculously overcautious food safety advice and no-one would publish advice saying it is fine to go past the use by date, even though it almost certainly is with cheese. I've had feta that was months out of date, it was fine.

Brie type cheese isn't usually even ripe by the use by date so I'm not sure what their thinking is with that one. Many British people won't even know how it is supposed to be eaten.

kizkiz · 01/01/2020 19:10

It's pretty obvious when any cheese goes out of date.
Years ago I worked on the fresh counters at waitrose. The brie had a set number of days it could be displayed before it was "off". Every time we hit that date we just changed it to another five days. It eventually hit that perfect gooey state and the whole thing would sell in a day

busybarbara · 01/01/2020 19:11

Yes but I would generally cut a slice off any exposed edges first. It’s new surface mould that would be more likely to upset your stomach and not what’s inside since it’s aged anyway

spingly · 01/01/2020 19:12

No you absolutely can't! Send it to me, I'll pm my address!

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2020 19:12

Yes, it’s mouldy already.

Oblomov20 · 01/01/2020 19:15

God yes. I've been eating ours, well out of date!

Aquilla · 01/01/2020 19:17

Defo

GladAllOver · 01/01/2020 19:24

Stilton is never ready to eat until after its sell by date.
We call it the 'smell by' date :)

Eminybob · 01/01/2020 19:37

Absolutely, it’s supposed to be”aged”

On a related note, I bought Tesco Stilton infused with port this Christmas and it is incredibly good.

ByeMF · 01/01/2020 19:45

Definitely - you can freeze it too.

Petrichor11 · 01/01/2020 19:51

I’m neurotic about use by dates, but I would definitely eat Stilton past it’s use by as long as it looked, smelled and tasted right. Surely it’s all a bit arbitrary with things like hard cheese anyway?

SantaBeckett · 01/01/2020 20:02

I have a huge chunk of stilton which I am slowly devouring its already out of date by a few days but that wont stop me .
I also have 4 more lumps in the freezer as It was reduced to about £1 for 400g

@Lunaballoon Do you have a recipe for the soup ?
@JayAlfredPrufrock Do you have a recipe for the dip ?

SanAntonio · 01/01/2020 20:04

We opened out last christmas stilton in August.

meatandcrustypies · 01/01/2020 20:05

Surely it’s already mouldy Grin

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 01/01/2020 20:07

It's fine, the age will improve it.

AlpacaGoodnight · 01/01/2020 20:07

I opened some just before Christmas. It said use within 3 days but it's still delicious and will last ages yet!

wildthingsinthenight · 01/01/2020 20:08

Totally. Get the crackers out!

SpoonBlender · 01/01/2020 20:08

Blue or brie-type cheese is rarely even ready to eat by the 'best before' date, in my experience. Trough on.

bettybattenburg · 01/01/2020 20:08

I wouldn't, if you get ill you'll feel really blue for a few days

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/01/2020 20:09

Yes. But be aware that the ‘bad mould’ on stilton is orange. Just cut that off.

Lunde · 01/01/2020 20:10

Yes

Dh is currently eating Edam that he found at the back of the fridge in the cellar with a best before date of Christmas ..... 2017
