What do you like? What have you enjoyed in the past?

betternamechangeforthisone · 31/12/2019 22:33

You should be able to get a trial of kindle unlimited. It’s really great. Loads of free books.

Most libraries also have a facility to allow you to read e-book.

vivacian · 31/12/2019 22:34

I don’t think books work like that [fconfused

Bumble1830 · 31/12/2019 22:35

There are lots of kindle books you can get cheap. I've been reading a lot of Nick Spalding on my kindle. I also have a trial of kindle unlimited, you can borrow as many books as you like ... I'm reading a lot at the moment!

Jodi Taylor Chronicles of St Mary's

St Mary's is a research institute where they carry out historical research in contemporary time. (Dr Bairstow will not be happy if you call it time travel.)
Sometimes laugh out loud hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking. People you like die.

Also Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London series. Sort of Harry Potter for grown ups. I think the quality has fallen off a bit, but the first three were excellent.

Anything out of copyright will be available free online somrwhere. Look at Project Gutenberg or archive.org or Faded Page. (Note that some of the Faded Page titles aren't out of copyright in the uk.)

Also, some of us here on Mumsnet are writers....

Check the kindle daily deal every day to see if anything appeals.

Just finished and really liked Chris Cleave, Everyone Brave Has Been Forgiven.

PrettyShiningPeople · 31/12/2019 22:58

A quick, light read with a bit of a twist to start you off: The Man Who Didn’t Call

Check out some of the book lists, like those on Good Reads for example

The “What we’re reading” section on here under the books section is also a good place for recommendations.

Keep an eye on the Kindle daily deals - each day 3 or 4 books offered for 99p. Can be anything from trash to a current bestseller.

Writersblock2 · 31/12/2019 23:02

I’ve really lived Sally Rooney this year.

Shufflebumnessie · 31/12/2019 23:02

I really enjoyed 600 hours of Edward by Craig Lancaster. In fact, I enjoyed the sequel even more (Edward adrift) as I felt I understood the character much better as I'd learnt so much from the first book.
It's about a man who has Aspergers and OCD and his take on various life situations. Very different to anything I'd read before but I can't wait to read the 3rd one (a belated Christmas treat to myself).

Writersblock2 · 31/12/2019 23:02

Loved*

Vehivle · 31/12/2019 23:04

Eleanor oliphant is completely fine. Absolutely loved that book - and critics agree that it's great! I highly recommend it!

CalvinJohn · 31/12/2019 23:05

My dad, who never picks up a book. Is racing through Billy Connely's new book.

BodenGate · 31/12/2019 23:06

Lisa Jewell books
Shari Lapena especially The Couple Next Door
The Rumour
I Invited Her In

Foodtheif · 31/12/2019 23:08

I got a kindle too. I’ve read a couple of books that I’ve enjoyed; the forgetting time was one of them. Also reading a Peter James one at the mo. Called dead simple. It’s a real page turner.

Foodtheif · 31/12/2019 23:10

Yes Eleanor oliphant is a good book. As is the couple next door. Really enjoy psychological thrillers.
