To ask how often you change a nappy?!

LittleBeansMum · 31/12/2019 04:54

I should totally probably know this...probably shouldn't get to a year and still be asking nappy questions haha!

But...I change my LO's (12 months) nappy at the same points day by habit.

  1. When she wakes at 7am
  2. Before her morning nap at around 9:15am
  3. Before her lunchtime nap at around 12:15pm
  4. After afternoon snack (around 3:30pm)
  5. Before bed (around 7pm)
  6. Plus any time she pooes

And thought this was fair enough. Then 2 things happened within 24 hours

  1. In the Christmas madness my DD slept slightly longer in the morning than usual and took her sweet time at breakfast, so her nappy was changed closer to 8am. Then DD fell.asleep in her pushchair before she'd even had her lunch and slept for ages, and I changed her nappy AFTER lunch nap, and my husband then said he didn't change her nappy before her morning nap because it had only been an hour since it had been changed for thr morning and wasn't poorly. So she was in one nappy from 8am to 130pm. I said I hoped she hadn't been uncomfortable, and DH said "well, these things are so absorbent and she's in just one all night and she didn't seem uncomfortable " so don't worry about it!" ....and I didn't!

Until...

2..The following day, I'm with a friend whose DD is a little older (2yo) and she makes.a throwaway remark about expensive nappies and how she has at least 10-12 a day x however many days etc. And she kept on going about how some people "only change nappies every couple of hours" and wrinkled her nose up. Then said how she never lets her DD go more than 1 hour to an hour and a half without changing it because it's " SO MANKY"

Anyway I'm mumbling something non-committal and thinking "how did she find out about my weird day yesterday??!! (although it was just a coincidence) and now like a muppet I'm wondering which way you guys go....if in doubt, change it more often, or "nah if it's not pooey, don't stress"

Sorry for strange and boring question!

We aim for every four hours (plus poos obviously). Nursery change her about every three I think. Every hour for a 2 year old is ridiculous.

MrsMonkeyBear · 31/12/2019 05:05

I'm like you. Dd2 is now 2 but for the last year we've done

7am, Wake up change
11am, pre lunch/nap
2.30pm, change before school run
6.30-7pm, post bath/pre bed

Additional changes if need be for poo.

MimiCaeger · 31/12/2019 05:05

3-4 hours plus poos
Or when you feel like they might need it, wish to settle etc

Rememberallball · 31/12/2019 05:07

I would say 4/5 times a day but depends on poos as they get changed immediately or as soon as is practical. Wet only nappies get done when I get them dressed, lunchtime, teatime and before bed as a minimum.

Ambrose2 · 31/12/2019 05:11

Anywhere from 4 to 12 x depending on the day. I don't change them to an arbitrary schedule but when they are wet or dirty.

sunshinekids · 31/12/2019 05:11

For my 1 and a half year old.

9am - wake up
11am - Usually poo
2pm - before nap
6pm - before tea
9pm - bedtime

But I don't find these are all that wet. A toddler must get annoyed with hourly nappy changing.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 31/12/2019 05:12

I've never really scheduled them, just changed as and when, usually after feeds. We get through a packet of 40 a week, so between 5 and 7 changes a day.

Deckthehallswith · 31/12/2019 05:37

I have a 6 month old and change him whenever he's wet. I probably do go through 10 nappies a day with him. But he gets upset when his nappy is wet so I think if your LO was uncomfortable she would let you know.
He stays in the same nappy all night though (up to 12 hours) as he sleeps through.

Cremebrule · 31/12/2019 06:09

She might have a very pooy child. I’ve gone though different phases but nap times have always been a check point and I’d normal do after breakfast as a minimum. My first was a frequent pooer and would have small liquidy ones when teething so there were times we would have been changing hourly. It’s not something either of us enjoyed.

snowball28 · 31/12/2019 06:14

I have a very pooey 7 month old who easily goes through 12+ nappies a day, and a toddler I only do when she wakes up and about 2/3 times (pretty much every 3/4 hours) times in a day then a change before bed

corduroyal · 31/12/2019 06:24

When it needs to be changed - for a disposable, when it's pooped in or thoroughly wet or after about 4 hours.

For a reusable, when it's pooped in or about to leak or after about three hours.

DS is a frequent pooer but I believe in getting my money's worth out of nappies/reducing amount going to landfill.

Hourly changes are way ott, that'll piss the child off, rub their skin too much and it's wasteful.

RhymingRabbit3 · 31/12/2019 06:31

12 nappies a day for a 2 year old seems ridiculous. Did she say they're actually wet every time or does she change it every hour regardless? I would say having unused or barely used nappies sitting in landfill for 250 years is "so manky".

poppycity · 31/12/2019 06:32

I think your schedule is a good one. Personally I wouldn't leave a nappy on for more than 2 hours unless child asleep. I've always done

upon waking (immediately, not after breakfast) - 6 am
before morning nap - 8 am
after morning nap - 10 am
before afternoon nap - 12:30 pm
after afternoon nap 2 pm
before supper 4:30 pm
with evening bath/before bed 7 pm
plus any poos and if any waking in middle of night then always changed then too (so usually once more in middle of night)

I wouldn't put a child to bed in a wet nappy, nor leave a nappy wet for 3+ hours. I remember HV saying 6-8x in a 24 hour cycle was ideal.

QuietCrotchgoblins · 31/12/2019 06:49

Every hour is ridiculous on a 2yo unless your child has very sensitive skin or diarrhoea. A lot of toddlers start fighting you changing nappies. She needs

I would change immediate after a poo or when nappy feels fullish, normally at wake up ( 5amish), nap time -9am, after lunch maybe 1pm, mid afternoon 3pm then fresh one on after bath for bed.

Your husband is right - disposable nappies are designed to hold a night of wee. If your child's skin isn't sensitive you could leave it hours and hours and they would probably be fine.

randomsabreuse · 31/12/2019 06:49

More or less when used. So instantly if pooey, or once a decent amount of wee is in it - both mine quite quickly started doing "big" wees less frequently rather than little and often...

Always first thing in the morning and last thing at night, otherwise as required- probably no more than 4 in the day.

If DC wanted more often than that I would go cloth...

fruityconfusedhotdog · 31/12/2019 07:21

Every 3 hours or when poo-ey for my 2-year-old (reusables so 3 hours is really the limit to prevent leaks). Disposables would do every 4 hours

HuloBeraal · 31/12/2019 07:26

In the NICU they changed nappies every 3 hours plus poos. If they don’t change more frequently in intensive care you don’t need to at home! 😆😆 Every hour is madness. And not very environmentally friendly.
They also write BO (bowels open) and PU (passed urine) in the NICU when they do. My son once shat so spectacularly over the incubator and the consultant that the nurse wrote BO XXL. 😂😂

Mumdiva99 · 31/12/2019 07:27

My PFB would have been on schedule. DD2 would probably be every few hours. My third child was lucky to get a nappy change. Once they can talk and move they come tell you. (Sort of joking....but not really.) Don't fret. If you aren't getting leaks and baby isn't sore and it doesn't smell then all good.

Oldfail · 31/12/2019 07:28

Never had a schedule just usually at convenient times.
Upon waking
Before snack
Before lunch /nap
Before tea
Before bed

Anytime there is poo. With 2 year old tend to get through about 5 nappies in a day ish. Although yesterday she kindly did 4 poos plus wees so had about 8 nappies

12 nappies for a 2 year old is excessive and a complete waste unless they are asking to be changed.

Oldfail · 31/12/2019 07:31

With @Mumdiva99

Dont stress. As long as they are changed a few times in a day then it's all good

I will say though that Pampers dry pull ups have a weird whiff when they are full. I thought it was dds wee smelling, so changed to a store brand and it was fine. Dont know why they smell but it's not pleasant

Oopsypoopsy2020 · 31/12/2019 07:35

3/4 nappies a day same age as your baby. I’m surprised you haven’t noticed her changing her toddler that frequently!

zebrapig · 31/12/2019 07:35

DS is two. Normally gets changed when he wakes, again when he gets dressed (can be 2/3 hours later at a weekend) and he's always wettest at these two. After this it's when I remember or if he poos. Then again at bedtime. Nursery normally do 3 changes through the day, more if they poo. DS rarely gets a sore bum so my negligent nappy routine isn't doing him any harm!

saywhatwhatnow · 31/12/2019 07:35

I'm clearly lax compared to your friend. DS is 19months and gets changed

6ish when he wakes
10ish (normally poos)
1ish before nap
Sometimes gets a change in the afternoon if very wet, sometimes not.
6ish After bathtime

Never had nappy rash. It's a waste of money and effort to change them every hour at this age, and horrifically bad for the environment!

Wiaa · 31/12/2019 07:40

I've not got a schedule but I'd guess we use about 6- 8 a day when you factor in poos. Obviously first as soon as we're up, then every 2 to 3 hours or so. Usually change just before leaving the house and when getting back home if no change needed while out. Always change for bed regardless of how long the current one has been on for. We dont change during the night lo rarely wakes anyway obvs would if pooped but never has

Camomila · 31/12/2019 07:42

I used to do it about every 3 hours because thats how often we did it when I worked at the nursery I worked at.

I did feel guilty about the planet but DS had sensitive skin so needed to be changed that often. Then I potty trained earlish because I felt bad! (2years 3m)
