To ask how often you change a nappy?!

LittleBeansMum · 31/12/2019 04:54

I should totally probably know this...probably shouldn't get to a year and still be asking nappy questions haha!

But...I change my LO's (12 months) nappy at the same points day by habit.

  1. When she wakes at 7am
  2. Before her morning nap at around 9:15am
  3. Before her lunchtime nap at around 12:15pm
  4. After afternoon snack (around 3:30pm)
  5. Before bed (around 7pm)
  6. Plus any time she pooes

And thought this was fair enough. Then 2 things happened within 24 hours

  1. In the Christmas madness my DD slept slightly longer in the morning than usual and took her sweet time at breakfast, so her nappy was changed closer to 8am. Then DD fell.asleep in her pushchair before she'd even had her lunch and slept for ages, and I changed her nappy AFTER lunch nap, and my husband then said he didn't change her nappy before her morning nap because it had only been an hour since it had been changed for thr morning and wasn't poorly. So she was in one nappy from 8am to 130pm. I said I hoped she hadn't been uncomfortable, and DH said "well, these things are so absorbent and she's in just one all night and she didn't seem uncomfortable " so don't worry about it!" ....and I didn't!

Until...

2..The following day, I'm with a friend whose DD is a little older (2yo) and she makes.a throwaway remark about expensive nappies and how she has at least 10-12 a day x however many days etc. And she kept on going about how some people "only change nappies every couple of hours" and wrinkled her nose up. Then said how she never lets her DD go more than 1 hour to an hour and a half without changing it because it's " SO MANKY"

Anyway I'm mumbling something non-committal and thinking "how did she find out about my weird day yesterday??!! (although it was just a coincidence) and now like a muppet I'm wondering which way you guys go....if in doubt, change it more often, or "nah if it's not pooey, don't stress"

Sorry for strange and boring question!

Whenever I suspect it needs changing - maybe 10-15 times a day. Hate the thought of leaving her sitting in her own wee. Sad

(14 month old and cloth nappies)

Bipbipbipbip · 31/12/2019 19:04

3-4 a day depending on how heavy it is and poos. Take it she must have a compliant DC, mine wouldn't tolerate that much changing!

5zeds · 31/12/2019 19:08

When the baby pees or poos.

KidCaneGoat · 31/12/2019 19:11

Morning, after lunch and bedtime plus poos.

PinkyU · 31/12/2019 19:14

My dd is older but still gets changed around 10-20 times per day including 3/4 scheduled changes in school, and more if required. It’s bank breakingly expensive!!

I would like to switch back to cloth nappies as we did them when she was little but it’s nigh on impossible to to amass a stash of big sizes plus school are very reluctant to change cloth for some reason. I do hate the environmental impact I’m causing.

Grumpos · 31/12/2019 19:15

So she wakes her child up every two hours during the night to change the nappy?
No she doesn’t.
So she’s talking shite.
Change nappies when they need changing! That’s usually going to be every few (3-4 maybe) plus any time it actually needs changing.
Using too much moisture (wipes) on baby’s skin isn’t the best thing so changing unnecessarily could actually be counterproductive
Your friend is entitled to do what she likes but it’s going to be excessive in most people’s opinions

Raspberrytruffle · 31/12/2019 19:15

Nappy changes

  1. Upon waking up after nap or being asleep all night.
  2. Before leaving the house to go anywhere
3.as soon as a bowel movement has occurred or there nappy smells a bit wet. 4 as a rule if there are no bowel movement we change the nappy every 3/4 hours. I probably change nappies far to much but I'm fearful of my dd getting a sore bum, I've got terrible memories of my premature dd having a bloodied bottom on the scubu unit because she was so fragile and the staff had left her during the night with a soiled nappy on so I keep her now gorgeous peach of a bum clean and safe 😢
Mesacasa · 31/12/2019 19:16

My nursery changes every 2 hours so 4 times a day which I think is excessive esp as I provide the nappies!

At home we do

Upon waking
Before lunchtime nap so 4-5 hours after waking
After nap so 3 hours after last change
After bath so 3-4 hours after last change

So I'm super manky

maddiemookins16mum · 31/12/2019 19:18

Well that’s one two year old who’ll be a long time to be toilet trained if she never feels wet.

LL83 · 31/12/2019 19:20

Your dc would have cried or whinged if uncomfortable. You would have smelled it or noticed it visibly full if left too long and there would be nappy rash or burst nappy if it wasnt able to absorb the liquid.

Your friend is ott. Your way is perfectly reasonable.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 31/12/2019 19:27

Wake up (anytime between seven and eight usually although ten to nine today!). Before nap at around 9:30 after nap before lunch around 11:30, a large poo usually follows lunch so again by about one. He naps again at about half two if it's wet I change pre nap of its not I leave it until after so about half three/four ish that comes off pre bath around six, fresh one for bed. So on average about 6/7 a day but that's on a one poo day, yesterday was a three poo day so it was more! DS is one

carly2803 · 31/12/2019 19:30

every hour?! god no haha

waking - 6am
before morning nap
lunch time(12ish)
before afternoon nap
mid afternoon
bedtime-7ish
during the night once or twice

Sensitive skin here!needs must!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 31/12/2019 19:35

When it's wet (as in I look at him and think oh that nappy looks a bit full) or when he's pooed.

KellyHall · 31/12/2019 19:37

My dd always hated a wet nappy so would make it known she wanted it changed as soon as it was wet. She'd sit in poo as long as it took us to realise it was there! Confused

Expressedways · 31/12/2019 19:41

I suspect your friend is lying, or she’s removing dry nappies for the sake of it which is batshit- what a waste financially and environmentally! 2YOs usually hold it for longer and consequently don’t need changing that frequently. Your schedule sounds perfectly normal and in line with what our daycare does.

newbingepisodes · 31/12/2019 19:44

Christ I'm a shit parent I only change my 8 month old 4 times a day plus poos.

Fouroutoffour · 31/12/2019 19:49

Your friend sounds bonkers! We changed every 2 hours when DS was newborn, as he'd easily poo 8-10x/ 24 hours, but we switched to changing every three hours and when he pooed when that calmed down. I remember a friend changing her DD every time the nappy was wet, which used to make me cringe as it was so unnecessary and wasteful! Doing that aged 2 is completely ridiculous! And I agree with a PP that it's those nappies sitting in landfill that's mainly, not a slightly wet nappy!

DS is now 15 months and we use cloth nappies. They have to be changed every three hours during the day or they'll leak (he has a mega nappy overnight that will last 12+ hours). He usually goes through 5-6 nappies in 24 hours.

@BinkyU you've probably looked into it already, but The Nappy Lady has a section on cloth nappies for child onward incontinence on her website, might be of interest to you?

Meyouandbabytoo · 31/12/2019 19:53

Every 3h or so. Generally whenever it needs doing though.
Usual:
7am wake up
8am usually pooey
11am before nap at 1130
2pm
530pm
8pm before bed
Additional if needed for extra poos or lots of wee. DC almost 2.

Agree with pp that every hour is ridiculous. You'd never not be changing them!

Purpleartichoke · 31/12/2019 19:53

Wver

Purpleartichoke · 31/12/2019 19:54

Every time she peed, though I would let it go for just a bit if we were out and quickly heading someplace more convenient to do the change.

bananaontoast1 · 31/12/2019 19:56

I have a 5 week old boy so I change his nappy approximately 9000 times an hour. 😂

Your friend's nappy use seems excessive though. Aside from the environmental impact, she's surely just creating more work for herself?! Especially on a wriggly toddler!

Runbikeswim · 31/12/2019 19:57

I changed it when it needed to be changed and mine have survived Confused

PullingMySocksUp · 31/12/2019 19:58

They don’t feel wet these days, so I changed them as little as possible. So morning, 1ish, mid afternoon unless it wasn’t full of wee and then bedtime.

UndertheCedartree · 31/12/2019 20:00

Obviously it is much more frequent for a newborn when 12 nappies is common. But for a 12 month old? Your schedule sounds fine and I wouldn't worry about a day where you changed less because of circumstances. You DH is right they are very absorbant. 12 nappies a day for a 2 year old sounds crazy and very expensive!
