To ask you to pray for the thousands of people trapped on a beach by fires in Victoria?

There are 4000 people from the town of Mallacoota, Victoria, Australia, that is currently being destroyed by fire. They most likely won’t have homes to return to. They all have life jackets on ready to take shelter in the water as embers rain down upon them. Fire personnel have just - as I post - told them to get in the water. Can you imagine how they must feel?

Australia at the moment is burning across 4 states. Where I am it is 45c and the smell of smoke is heavy. It is a terrible summer for us.

Prayers aren’t going to help anyone.

They need a government who accepts that climate change is not a myth. That would be a good start.

Panticus · 31/12/2019 09:43

@astrogirl99 I completely agree.

Tonight I just feel so sad and defeated about it all. My Facebook feed is FULL of posts and memes emphatically declaring that the fires have nothing to do with climate change and are 100% the fault of the Greens for not allowing back burning. I have given up on trying to (politely!) counter-argue the point as these people just have their heads buried in the sand and won't engage in meaningful discussion. It's depressing.

I feel so sorry for future generations. What a fucking mess of a world they are going to inherit. It makes me very relieved to be childfree.

Muckyboots1 · 31/12/2019 09:46

Has there been any update on this? Are they still trapped on the beach?

We've all ignored the warnings on climate change, carried on our consumerism, flights, travel and perhaps most shocking (as its right before our eyes) doing absolutely fuck all about plastics and where it ends up.

We are now going to reap the whirlwind of what climate change really means... as for praying for a country that is going to put on a firework display whilst thousand have have their lived wrecked by fire... no chance but the individuals affected, of course, it's a terrible situation they face.

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/12/2019 09:53

I see that the appalling Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of Australia, is planning to go ahead with his New Year's Eve party tonight at Kirribilli House (official residence) well, I guess it's probably already started by now.

Quaffing champagne while his nation burns.

JanesKettle · 31/12/2019 09:55

The fire front passed Mallacoota; people still stranded, but immediate danger is past.

gitehn · 31/12/2019 09:56

If now isn't the time to discuss climate change, when is?

This situation has become so bad because of climate change. It's only going to get worse. Governments and corporations need to take some fucking responsibility and they won't. They have blood on their hands.

CrissmussMockers · 31/12/2019 09:57

When a country elects climate-change denying religious nuts like Morrison and Abbott, and gives Pervert Pell leave to appeal, I think prayers may be part of the problem more than they are part of the solution.

HeresMe · 31/12/2019 09:57

Hope they all get out safely.

Thoughts and prayer is absolutely useless as if there was a God he wouldn't let it be happening.

bluetongue · 31/12/2019 10:05

Please know that plenty of Australians didn’t vote for Morrison and find him abhorrent.

I tried to warn people that he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing but they didn’t listen. I’m so angry about him and his government that I’m not even sure I want to live in this country anymore.

He’s a religious fanatic that probably think the fires are god’s will. How did this once great country get to this point Sad

astrogirl99 · 31/12/2019 10:17

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily:

Just letting you know I'm glad to wear the badge of 'smug', 'crowing', 'unsupportive', victim-blaming 'cunt' who should be 'ashamed' of myself in this instance. I don't mind wearing these insults if it means I am a person who chooses speaks the truth in service to the wellbeing of my compatriots and beloved Australian fauna and flora, I can deal with that, cheers.

@Panticus: don't give up. Change is difficult but there are a ton of energetic people out there who you can get involved with. Small steps. We can do this x.

Much love to all xx

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/12/2019 10:17

I will hold you and all of your country in my prayers. This has been a terrible, terrible year for fires.

Kahlua4me · 31/12/2019 10:17

My heart breaks for all those trapped in the fires or on the beaches. Horrendous situation to be in.

I can’t imagine though what the government is thinking on still going ahead with the fireworks when the country is in catastrophe.

JanesKettle · 31/12/2019 10:17

49% of us didn't vote for Morrison.

astrogirl99 · 31/12/2019 10:18

*chooses to speak the truth...

lborgia · 31/12/2019 10:19

Feel free to rant about climate change.. it's feeling squeamish about it that has got us in this mess.

As pp said, 59% did NOT vote for them.

Meanwhile, if aforesaid dies feel like donating today/ tonight, new Red Cross link.

They're definitely shaping the TV tonight as a fundraiser -

ABC TV with the red cross

maddening · 31/12/2019 10:19

Can they not evacuate by boat?

MrsScrubbithatescleaning · 31/12/2019 10:20

@TeaForTara and @eaglejulesk

Jesus! I can only assume that you haven't bothered your lazy arses to read any of the harrowing posts on this thread, otherwise your posts oozing disgusting contempt and a severe lack of compassion is truly mind boggling. ConfusedAngry

For everyone suffering and worried about friends and family, I have donated but I don't know how much that will help in the immediate short term.
Thinking of you all in Oz in the areas affected. Thanks

TheClaws · 31/12/2019 10:21

There’s a time and place for discussions on climate change, but crowing about it on this thread, when people are worried sick about family members dying, isn’t it. Shame on you

I somewhat agree with this. I understand the posters who want to discuss climate change - and those who want to talk politics - but my OP was intended to draw awareness of the plight of the people stuck on the beach.

Apparently the current Aussie PM is an "end-timer" - many of these believe that anything that hastens the end of the world is a good thing, and some work actively towards it (not saying that he is, just that it could be influencing him).

I'm a practising Christian and I believe that God does thing's in God's own time. None of us can second-guess the Divine mind (which is the message of Job - not that we are here to suffer as many think).

And I think that God doesn't need anyone shouting "Are we nearly there yet?" and trying to step n the accelerator!

Prayer is a waste of time, and a substitute for inaction.

This is climate change in action. Superstition and the supernatural won’t fix it.

MintyMabel · 31/12/2019 10:27

Thoughts and prayers do nothing but make someone feel better for doing something. Ghouling over twitter accounts of what is happening won’t help either.

This thread was 150 posts in before anyone mentioned the real things people could do to help - donate to the Red Cross so they can actually do something to help those affected by the fire.

As @squeekums said, if you actually care and actually want to help, here is the link to donate. www.redcross.org.au/campaigns/disaster-relief-and-recovery-bushfires

MintyMabel · 31/12/2019 10:29

I'm a practising Christian and I believe that God does thing's in God's own time. None of us can second-guess the Divine mind (which is the message of Job - not that we are here to suffer as many think).

I’m sure that’s a wonderful comfort to those who have lost everything. They just have to sit and wait for this all loving (apparently) god to decide whether and when he will save them, or replace their homes, yeah?
