Holiday ruined due to my weight.

I've got a trip of a lifetime booked to New York in January, been booked for a year in order to pay for it. I am so overweight, need to lose 7 stone to be a healthy bmi (size 18/20) I've tried every diet so many times and here I am still huge and I feel like I've ruined the trip for myself already. I am really unfit so am dreading the walking already, the plane seat, the plane tray not coming down and having to pretend I'm asleep so no one notices. I don't even know why I'm posting tbh but I feel a bit better having 'said' it out loud. Aibu to think it's ruined before it's even started.

Are you saying you’re a 18/20 now?

If so, you’ll fit just fine lovey x

I did.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 30/12/2019 20:14

Well it’s too late to worry now.

Go and enjoy yourself, honestly life is too short to not enjoy.

Just let this worry about your weight inspire you to lose weight going forward from tomorrow

BloodyCats · 30/12/2019 20:14

When in January? It’s not too late to start working on your fitness level. Even just 2 weeks of pushing how far you can walk can make a big difference.

milliefiori · 30/12/2019 20:15

Think of it this way: in NYC you walk and walk and walk. We did 20k steps most days. It's so hard not to. You will need to take breaks and take some buses/cabs/subway rides but you'll still walk a lot and burn off so many calories in the process. What an amazing way to get fit. just make sure you have super comfortable shoes, really comfortable trousers and some anti chafing gel or pants.

PassMeAnotherCoffee · 30/12/2019 20:16

You'll love NY and you won't stick out, but I do agree with walking daily before you go. You will walk a long way when you go there. One time I walked an average ten miles a day over three days. So get your comfy shoes and thick socks on!

SouthWestmom · 30/12/2019 20:18

Such a good idea to start walking now so it's second nature soon!
God op don't let it ruin your trip just bloody enjoy it. Life is too short I have learned and you should just decide dieting is for February and have an amazing time.

Emmas85 · 30/12/2019 20:18

I go on Monday 13th so a few days to start walking. I've got thermal socks and comfy boots to wear. Thanks again.

Size 24, flew to Europe last year, belt was snug but all OK. Get some comfy shoesand take a couple of pairs (I usually alternate the type of shoe and include one pair with a slight heel. Enjoy your holiday!

LonginesPrime · 30/12/2019 20:18

Jeez, OP - spare a thought for all of us who are that size and aren't off to New York!

You'll be fine - just stop worrying and have a great time.

Gizmo79 · 30/12/2019 20:20

Just gonna say how jealous I am and don’t worry one bit? Enjoy every minute.

BloodyCats · 30/12/2019 20:24

I think if you start tomorrow you will surprise yourself how far you can walk in 2 weeks time.

Elvesdontdomagic · 30/12/2019 20:25

You go and have a fab time OP, everything will be fine! I felt skinny in Florida a few years ago and I was 6 months pregnant..seriously though you can't drop that much weight so quickly. 18/20 isn't that bad x

DecemberSnow · 30/12/2019 20:28

18/20 will fit in the plane seat, u wont need an extender belt and the tray will fit down fine.

18/20 really isnt huuuuuuuge....

xmastreestar · 30/12/2019 20:29

Your so lucky to get to go on a trip like that. Size is nothing, some skinny people are way more miserable and flights are so uncomfortable whatever. Have the best time you can, get yourself some nice clothes to feel good and some comfy shoes and enjoy your life! I find larger men way more attractive than skinny guys so why not women too!!🥰👍🏽

MorganKitten · 30/12/2019 20:30

Do not go by bmi, most doctors don’t use it as it’s out of date and tells people they are obese when not, athleates are classed as too heavy on it. I’ve flown big and small and it’s not that bad. Just enjoy it.

Pajamagirl · 30/12/2019 20:31

You will do lots of walking but there is also the hop on hop off buses , uptown , downtown routes or one that does both .
It is very casual there , please get good comfy shoes / trainers ,
It’s great nyc ... enjoy
It was one of the best Holidays I ever went on x

LemonPrism · 30/12/2019 20:33

Well there are lots of very overweight people in the US Tbf so you won't stick out that much (from my visits there not assumptions).

WombOfOnesOwn · 30/12/2019 20:34

I'm a fat woman, I used to weigh 330 but now more like 280. I wear a UK size 26 but am an American.

I go to NYC all the time on business (sometimes multiple times in a month) and live in a trendy west coast area. At no point has my weight ruined literally a single thing for me in the United States. You are overthinking this massively.

I wish I could meet up with you in NYC and walk around with you just to help you feel less self-conscious!

I used to feel like that but my mom actually helped me so much with it...she said, someday you might have a fat daughter. Do you want to tell her how many opportunities you passed up, how many photos you didn't take, because you were ashamed? No, you'd want her to see an example that was fearless and went forward with her body into the world, even if she knew weight was something she wanted to work on.

Skittlesandbeer · 30/12/2019 20:34

It might be that this trip really kicks off a longer exercise streak for you? I can imagine actually planning it that way!

You just keep walking after you get home, use the momentum. I find healthier eating is easier after I ‘get moving’ for a few weeks, as if my body is urging me on to better fitness!

Enjoy your fab trip!

madcatladyforever · 30/12/2019 20:35

I spent yearsenal not enjoying anything because of my weIghtfield. Such a waste of my life. I've had a gastric band and lost 7 stone it's much better but honestly don't worry the USA is geared up for us. There are much bigger folk up there than us and facilities to cater for it.

Scarlettpixie · 30/12/2019 20:36

I went to new york in August and am a size 18/20. No problems on the plane at all. We used public transport, did loads of walking (despite being very unfit) and had a blast! Calm down. You are really over thinking this.

Emmas85 · 30/12/2019 20:37

You've made me quite emotional. My weight has always been a problem, possibly the worry about it more than the weight itself sometimes. I really hope this trip kick starts the fitness kick I need and it's a wonderful trip. Thank you.

On Ryan air you might have a point about the seat; not on a transatlantic flight!

AlexanderHalexander · 30/12/2019 20:38

You are allowed to enjoy things without being thin, you know!

Go have a great time. Don't let perfectionism ruin the trip of a life time!

Frenchw1fe · 30/12/2019 20:38

That's 2 full weeks to walk more. As others have said just concentrate on improving your stamina.
Have a great time.
