When your DC’s friends come over, do you let them connect to your home WiFi?

DC’s are 12.

Why even ask this question ?
Mine is on the side of my cubord so everyone has access who turns up.
Even my next door have it (don't ask but her husband won't let them drill new holes into their house he's very old fashioned an stubborn so they only have basic virgin an he wouldn't let them have WiFi as it ment drilling haha) their DD is 15 so I gave her mine. Doesn't cost me anythin extra

Echoblue · 31/12/2019 13:45

Absolutely not. Knowing that most parents don't give a shit about network security, I never will.

AlunWynsKnee · 31/12/2019 13:45

We have a guest network. Means I can change the password without having to reconfigure all the WiFi connected things as they're on the main network.

pumpandthump · 31/12/2019 13:57

Yes, we let most people have it.

FinallyHere · 31/12/2019 13:59

One reason is that if a guest accessed illegal or worrisome materials, the police would be knocking on your door.

this ^

pumpandthump · 31/12/2019 14:03

FinallyHere set appropriate controls then. And it's also really easy to work out what device has accessed what these days. It's not the big deal it used to be.

They'd be able to ascertain incredibly quickly who, and which device had accessed this

I am aware that it could be sorted out eventually, which is why I didn't say that the issue would be that you would be held responsible. The issue would be the disruption caused by the fact that they would come looking.

My comment was in response to the people who could not imagine any reason to not simply share the WiFi password. It is also explains why even free public services insist on a register/login in process which includes your promise to abide by the terms and conditions set by the provider.

ButtercupGirI · 31/12/2019 14:50

I think some got confused, data allowance isn't the same as bandwidth limitation.

JingleCatJingle · 31/12/2019 18:51

So you share your wifi password and then someone else shares it and then hey it ends up on the internet.

And then you notice your performance slows wayyyy down and your bank account has diminished substantially.

Or change it from the default and manage it sensibly.

Data is power, secure yours.

Clymene · 31/12/2019 23:08

I'll let you know if I see a load of teenage boys hanging around outside @JingleCatJingle Grin

I don't think most older kids use WiFi much do they? Our babysitters never want to know the password because they all seem to have unlimited data

Engard · 31/12/2019 23:24

No. If they're round to play with my children then they're there to play not to sit on their phones 🤷🏻‍♀️

OwlBeThere · 31/12/2019 23:25

Yes of course

ChocolateCoins19 · 31/12/2019 23:27

Yes why not..

SE13Mummy · 01/01/2020 01:47

My DCs' friends are given the password to the children's router if they want it. DH and I use a different router, mainly so if one of the DCs 'forgets' to bring their phone down at the agreed time, we can switch off their wifi without it affecting ours.

Topseyt · 01/01/2020 02:26

Well, my youngest is 17 now so I don't have to police it really.

I have no objection to their friends using the WiFi password.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/01/2020 02:32

My dc have been known to use my Netflix password when watching something on the classroom computer Grin

UndomesticHousewife · 01/01/2020 03:09

The dc friends have been using our WiFi for more than 10 years. They put the password into their phone. All guests do. No one has hacked the router..

Spaceprincess · 01/01/2020 09:43

When my kids were younger they had it written on their bedroom wall for their friends.

lilgreen · 01/01/2020 09:45

Yes. It’s free.

lilgreen · 01/01/2020 09:46

You’d have to be in range to use it wouldn’t you?

bellinisurge · 01/01/2020 09:47

I have a job which means I need to be careful who has access to our router password. I just make my phone a hotspot and put it on mobile data.

lovelyupnorth · 01/01/2020 10:04

Yep as when my DDs where 12 they didn’t have mobile phones only iPods.

Not really an issue. Did love the fact a good friend of mines next door neighbour was very high up in a major IT company and he had his very fibre connection with no security on at all.

cavabiensepasser · 01/01/2020 12:14

Yes, of course. Because I'm not weird.
And erm... wikipedia and BBC, but not youtube? Poor kids.
